The Flyers get Zibanejad
The Rangers get Tippett, Cates (salary reason, his contract is over after this season)

Rangers get $2.3M free space after this season plus a winger who can skate and shoot.
Flyers get a veteran center who probably needs a change of scenery.

5 points in 5 games but he needs a change of scenery?

Yet Tippett who has 1 point in 5 games is described as someone who can skate and shoot.

Ziba doesn't fit flyers timeline. Flyers say no. Tippett leads team in scoring chances. The points will come.

Rangers must desperately need a charitable tax deduction to consider this trade.

Owen Tippett can “shoot?” He shoots about as much as Zibanejad but would need to score on >40% more of them to match “change of scenery” Zibanejad. “Change of scenery” Zibanejad has almost as many assists over the last season + 5 games as “skate and shoot” Tippett has points.

What current/known 1C has ever been traded as a “change of scenery” short of reported attitude issues? And even if you can find a 2C with attitude issues who was traded, the return was a hell of a lot higher than a W with half of the production of the C and a cap dump.

Zib doesn’t really need a change of scenery - he needs a serious sit down and something other than “gentle parenting” from his coach and GM about what his expectations and responsibilities are and how much time he spends with his toys (making music, etc) versus how committed he is to winning, because for better or worse, he is the 1C on a contending team and that team’s window is another 2-3 years at most. It’s time to stop the pouty, passive, spoiled act and give yourself a cup check and go play with the intensity of just 3-4 years ago when he was genuinely probably a top 10-15 C. He’s just a massive wimp. Like the wimpiest.

Setting aside any questions about the specific players being mentioned here, the direction is entirely wrong. The Rangers are at the top of their game, and should be trading prospects for bigger pieces, not moving key components of their roster. The Flyers are, or at least ought to acknowledge that they are, years away from being legitimately competitive, and should be looking for deals that bring back youth, not a late-prime guy like Zibanejad.

If the Flyers had Zibanejad, and the Rangers had Tippett and Cates, a deal like this would make a lot more sense than the other way around.

We’ll trade you Zibanejad as a cap dump, but we don’t want your bad contracts back.

Most trades with a big salary need salary heading back to manage the cap, especially in season.

Maybe target Yzermans wings? They need a top 6 center and could send a vet back, where Rangers get someone with a lower cap hit and some futures attached. Either way a not great contract likely comes back in any deal.

Don’t the Flyers theoretically have a lot of cap space?

I’ll trade Zibanejad literally anywhere, Wings, Flyers, Islanders, Devils. He has one of the worst contracts in the NHL.

We Flyers are not interested in getting older.....we are rebuilding and Zin does nothing to help us at the expense of one of our better young players.

Tippett's contract is worse. Very low hockey iq, yet signed for another 7 years.
Edit: looked at zib's contract, didn't expect it to be that bad. Yes, you are right.
