Confirmed with Link: Rangers extend D Will Borgen

I like Borgen and wanted to extend him. Had him in the $2.75-$3.5 range. This is still just a stay-at-home defenseman we are talking about. This just seems like serious overpayment for a small sample size.

If Borgen is getting $4.1 what is K’Andre Miller getting?

Borgen has a couple of seasons at or above 20 points in Seattle. He’s more Klein-like

I can’t work up the emotion to complain about this too much. My largest gripes are the following:

I would have liked for a larger sample size on this guy actually being good with us

And I don’t like the thought process of roster building based on a hunch. There’s not a big sample size on Schneider being able to play the left well. I’d like some level of confidence Schneider can so I’m not paying 4 million dollars for a 3RD

Because people mentioned B Smith; when we signed him to his 4x$4.35m deal that was 5.8& of the cap.
Assuming $92m, 5.8% would be $5.33m per. Borgen comes in at 4.4%

This is what I’m saying. His contract is FAR closer to Klein than Smith. Klein was a 3rd pairing d-man we all loved. Borgen is a real solid addition to the 6 d-men on this team. I don’t care if someone labels him a 5 or a 4.

Traded, hopefully

Some of you guys just complain for the sake of complaining and don't know puck at all.

But yeah, this is a bit rich and a bit long. But LOL at "this is to justify Kakko" or "He's been a 6/7 his entire life."

90% of you guys had no idea who the f*** he was until a month ago.
Yeah it's quite idiotic. The "Drury is trying to justify Kakko" take is the absolute dumbest, as if he didn't jettison Sammy Blais back to St. Louis or creatively dump Goodrow when he needed to. Drury makes some stupid moves but he doesn't seem like he's afraid to admit them and move forward.

Anyway I said in a thread just last night I hoped they'd do 3Y/$12M for him so I think the money is right. I don't love doing five years but he should be easily movable in a couple years if we need to go that route. And if continues his solid play then in a couple years, with the cap going up, he'll potentially be a bargain.

Why is everyone freaking out? Maybe $500k more than what we wanted? Who cares. Cap is rising. The only thing that annoys me is the trade protection.
He is already around 2.75 so I figured 3.75 but to lock up for 5 years at 4 per isn't a big difference especially with cap going up. If he plays like he has recently than it seems fair. Will all depend on his play. 4 mill deals wont be hard to move if needed in future.

I think, to an extent, we forget how contracts change over time. We have it in our heads that a good 3rd pair guy should come in around $2.5m, or an average second liner should be around $5m, and forget that it's not 2016 any more and these guys just cost more. Has the stars push up towards $14m per, everyone else's contract gets pulled upwards too.
It just means that guys like Borgen look 'overpaid', but guys like Fox spend the 2nd half of their contracts being 'bargains'.

In some ways, I’d consider the longer term more beneficial to the team than the player. Especially with the jump in the cap coming. $4.1m today may look like $2.5m in short order

The trade protection is a non-factor. There's little chance we are going to trade him next season. After that, the protection drops to 15 teams, then 10, then 6, then none.

Anything at or below 10 is a non-factor. It’s all of the teams in Canada and then 2-3 places he can choose. That’s easy to work around

Well, Trouba was getting 8.5mm and was a boat anchor for us. He was also bringing down Miller. If any 1 player is responsible for our remarkable turn around its Will Borgen. He's a fab defender and has synergy with Miller helping him play better as well. In fact, this whole new group of Borgen, Vaak, Rempe, Edstrom, Carrick and Arthur have synergy. Young guys, hard workers, punchy, hitting above their weight, so filled with talent and enthusiasm. Its like a f***ing breath of fresh mountain air. Extend Borgen, even at a slightly elevated price. f*** yeah. He deserves it. We deserve it. Lets keep winning. See the forest from the trees. This group works. Keep it together.

BTW, if Borgen does fall off the face of the earth. He's paid 4M and has a movable contract. I just don't understand why people are so mad about this other than because they have no impartiality when it comes to Drury and are still mad about Kakko. Like, at its worst this deal won't be an anchor and is movable. The anger is completely misplaced.

Heard the same thing about Goodrow and Nemeth.

I'm by no means up in arms about this, but it's absolutely a significant commitment based on a small sample size.

Didn't Brendan Smith's game fall off the face of the earth because he didn't take things seriously and not because he sucked. I know we memed the weight loss but if you gain weight as a hockey player and aren't that amazing to begin with it could make you fall off the face of the earth.
He got married. The Borg don’t marry.

Theres a difference between saying that he was a 6/7 with the sabres and saying that he's been a 6/7 his entire career.

Because Adam Fox was a 5/6 when he came up. Guess what? Shit changes.

I mean Sam Reinhardt…

It’s a small sample here but he has a coupon of very good seasons in Seattle as well as his time here. It’s longer than just 15 games
