It's pretty wild how Luke Hughes got his defensive game together from season 1 to season 2. I think Bill said last year Luke was on the ice for a ton of empty net against goals that really dragged his +/- down a lot but he also was playing a very risky style of hockey at 5 on 5. He doesn't really need to lay the body too much to be effective on defense as they have stated he leads the league in stick checks for all defensemen. Without being too dramatic I wasn't sure if his defensive game would get this good first 3 to 5ish years. He was frustrating to watch at times last year but then would wow you with his skills.

There's a combo of things that have led to his improved play but Luke has bought in agyer Lindy let him free wheel his rookie season. I get the Hamilton situation upped his minutes last year but the improvement is crazy how night and day he is.

Not playing with Brendan Smith who plays a risky style when he doesn’t have to skill for it helps.

He was very good outside of playing Brendan Smith last year, I don't think Pesce will last the whole contract but he's an elite partner for Luke right now. Anyone with 2 able bodied arms is but Pesce is very good regardless this year and I was a big skeptic him outside of Carolina

This is the guy who definitely spams Rempe gifs in Twitter hockey arguments

Luke was already a much better 1 v 1 defender last season than I expected him to be. It was typically the thing that kept so-called offensive defensemen from being any good is that they can't defend - was never an issue for Luke, his biggest problem was zone exits which is much more solvable (and can also be systemic issues).

NST has the Rangers with 3 xG lol. That’s the fakest xG total I’ve ever seen

I think that chance that squirted through Markstrom and sat on the goalline was probably pretty big. I dunno about 3 but I think the Rangers had some big chances, just not a whole lot else.

Other than on the 2nd period power play I can’t think of a single dangerous chance they had. They had some zone time in the 1st, but nothing became of it as far as chances go.

I thought Markstrom had to face harder chances against the Pens the other night.

There was also the chance that landed on Panarin’s stick in the slot in the second.

What a win. Puts us 16 points up on them with 4 games to go before midseason. Knocks them 5 points behind a wild card spot with the rest of tonight’s games in progress.

And we are finally developing a true home ice identity and dominating style. I think we are 5 - 1 - 1 in our last 7 home games and really I have been waiting for us to develop that kind of home ice dominance. And you could feel it in the crowd reaction today. This team and this audience are finally developing the synergy and bond that can hopefully drive us into a serious playoff run this spring. You could also perceive it in Hughes remarks to the crowd after the game.

We have done it by developing an absolutely smothering defense first and physical style of play that we have taken to another level during this last streak of 7 out of 9 games at home. It’s a style of play that should wear well down the stretch and into the post season. Defense first with our skill is how we can win in playoff hockey.

Also you had to love our physical play today. The Rangers regularly bullied us in sweeping the season series from us last year. But this year the shoe is on the other foot. Couldn’t be more pleased.

As I predicted the Devils would get a win against the Rangers at 1 PM today, Monday, December 23, 2024. Today, the Devils got a 5-0 win giving Markstorm a shut out. Jack Hughes get 2 goals against. What a way for the team to go and celebrate Christmas or Hunakkah. Terrific December accomplishment

Go Devils

Merry Christmas everyone. Tomorrow I get 3 upper teeth extracted. One because it broke and the ones on the sides have cracks. That makes number 5, 6, & 7 extracted this month. I am on oxygen 24/7 and my mouth get dry as do my teeth so they crack and break at the gum line except this one broke in 3 pieces. I am on blood thinners so that causes bleeding unless I wait like I did for tomorrow. Talk with you after Christmas, may Santa be good to you and yours also the poor especially the poor kids.
Later. Have a Merry
