Kovalev buried his chances.
The difference is that for every chance he made for himself and buried, he had another two shifts where he tried to stick handle through 2-3 guys on his own and it almost never worked.

Gauthier has wheels and size that leads to breakaways that he NEVER buries. Outside of that, he doesn't have the hockey IQ to know where to be or where to put the puck.
