Post-Game Talk: Rangers @ Boston

I'm getting tired of Torts' mishanding of Gilroy out there.

He hasn't made a single mistake out there. He hasn't been on for a goal against. He is playing how your prototypical #6 guy should play. Quietly effective, not making any noise. Only played 4 mins.

I didn't quite get that either, only 4 mins and change for Gilroy... c'mon Torts :shakehead

I've had meltdowns of epic proportions before. That's the thing, they're almost all heat of the moment. I guess the loss to the Flyers when half their team was missing was not one that calming down would help. However, when most Rangers fans calm down they'd take the win against a great team like the Bruins and run. 2-1 against them. Not too shabby.
It's not that we won, it's how we won that's obviously frustrating. In the grand scheme of things, you're right in that 4 points against Boston is big. I'm interested to see how they respond Thursday against an awful Islanders team that always gets up to play us. NYI knows they absolutely need to have the game and after we embarrassed them last week, we need to match their intensity.

I'm less impressed with the Penguins for the playoffs than the Bruins. Talk about a top-heavy team with a meh goalie, that's the Pens. We lost 6 in a row to them, now that the team is playing much tighter defense and has more speed, I think we'd make short work of the Penguins in the playoffs, not so the Bruins, even though we're the Bruins least favored match-up.

Not a chance. If we beat the Pens it's in 7 games, and even that's a stretch. We just don't matchup well against them.

The Rngers have a passive box, shot blocking PK unit which gets picked apart by more skillful PP units like TB and Pitt. It is no major coincidence that our PP, which practices against our own PK scheme does better against passive units and worse against high-pressure PKs like Toronto nd the like.

I see we're now back to blaming Gaborik for things.

Hi Marian, 111 goals in 232 games?

I suppose if he ends the season with 20 goals I'll be seeing nothing but trade proposals all summer.

More of that has to do with getting a huge haul for a guy we may not re-sign. Wouldn't be the worst move in the world.

Amazing, however, how the defense and bottom six have gone from liabilities to strengths almost overnight with the addition of Miller, Kreider, Powe and Gilroy instead of Bickel and Rupp.
Powe's been a great addition. You can replace Bickel with a traffic cone and it'd be an upgrade. Gilroy's been good though.

Steps has looked a lot better when paired with Hags and Nash the past two games. When that line was first getting going, he didn't look that great.

I'm still not going to judge one way or another. If that line can play well for like 3-4 more games, I will say he has turned a corner.
Hagelin-Stepan-Nash has been our most consistent line for the last three games. Impressed with Nash making his linemates look as good as they have.

He had 4 shots today. Just as usual. If one of those goes in, he's a hero. If not, he's useless.

He's not a shift by shift factor and people need to get used to that fact.

Hi folks, B's fan here. I just posted this absurdly long post on the NHL "tonight's comebacks" thread (in response to SnowblindNYR, btw), and thought I might as well inflict on you here as well. It's slightly out of context, but still on topic. Thanks for indulging me:

Your nobility is appreciated. I'm pretty sure the respect is mutual between these two teams, so I'm not sure why some of us are getting so wound up over who dominated whom. But if we're going to dissect, here's what I'd say: each of these teams dominated a different facet of the game, and this is why we get divergent takes on this board:

1) Goaltending: significant edge to the Rangers tonight.
2) Defense: Rangers, by a significant margin.(the B's breakdowns were quite glaring tonight; perhaps if I were a NY fan I'd be noticing the visiting teams' breakdowns more, who knows...)
3) Neutral zone: Bruins, by a significant margin
4) Forwards/O-zone: Rangers made the best of their chances. B's maintained possession more via cycling, forecheck and board work, but were deficient in net-front presence and slot traffic.

So basically, different people focus on different things. To my eyes, the B's had the edge in puck possession and neutral zone. This is what causes many on this thread to say the B's outplayed NYR. But that's really only half the story. Despite all that possession, the B's didn't translate it into dangerous chances. Way too many shots from the perimeter, as others have noticed. What's more, I thought the Rangers D were unusually good with their sticks and their hits tonight. I'm not talking about spectacular, booming hits, but just enough body at the right time to get B's off the puck. Henrik was mostly solid, but he was also helped by good protection of the net front by his D.

This has become an old story though, when we face the Rangers. It's not unusual for the B's to have the puck a lot; but it's also not unusual that the B's tend not to be able to pierce Tortorella & Henrik's citadel nearly as much as they'd like to.

Incidentally, though I know we can be ridiculously homerish with the best (or worst) of them, generally the B's board is quick to admit when we are thoroughly outplayed yet still eke out a win (this is a common theme when we play the Habs), so I honestly don't think that those on this thread who insist that we outplayed the Rangers are simply "sore losers". I think this is what they honestly see in the game. Because they focused on certain facets, as discussed above.

Anyhoo, twas a great game, and strangely one that both teams can take nearly equal amounts of comfort and discomfort in. NYR fully deserved the extra point, though.

I like having Marian around WITH Nash. I would like both to spend 5 years together here. I am a major fan of both player's games. I'm pretty partial to Richards when he is in form, too.

I'm not looking to dump any of them at the nearest possible convenience. And I'm not the sort of fan subject to shiny new toy syndrome either.

Of our big three forwards, the one that has the most to prove right now is Richards. And that has A LOT to do with the power play. Aside from Brad, I'm really, really happy with how the team is performing at this moment.

We need to stop playing so damn passive when we get a lead.. Play to win, not to lose the game.. Playing "not to lose" is always going to cost you.

Nice job by Stralman in overtime when he broke his stick, got back and laid a good hit on a Bruin to stop any sort of rush they had going back into the Rangers zone.

It was a weak goal, but happy he got one tonight because he has been playing great out there.

I'm glad he decided to come back and not go overseas like rumored. He's been a huge help to the defense.

And then we never heard from Stralman again after that too many men on the ice penalty... :sarcasm:

Good thing I didn't watch this live. The walls might've come down. What a breakdown.

But a W is a W.

I don't think anyone is blaming him for any specific issue we had tonight.

That said, he DOES need to step up his play. He looks uninterested out there. I realize he's a streaky goal scorer, but he still needs to play with more urgency. Can't be making lazy passes like he was making tonight.

Same goes for Richards. He's gotta step it up. He looked okay for the first 5 games or so, but these last few, man, he has looked VERY sluggish and indecisive. Luckily for the Rangers, Stepan and Hagelin have stepped it up and are really the keys their offense right now, along with Nash.

This may be a bit counter productive, as Hagelin-Stepan-Nash has been out best line in these wins, but I think they should try Hagelin with Richards and Gaborik now that he's back on his game. He complimented those two perfectly last year, and I think those two need a sparkplug player like him on their line.

That game was an absolute disaster.

How so? We were the better team for almost 50 minutes. It sucks blowing a 3 goal lead obviously but lets not forget we played 1 of the best teams in hockey in their arena.

Good win. We should've held on but oh well. Still a big win against a really good team on the road. 3 wins in a row, 5 points behind Devils and 2 behind Pens with a game in hand on both teams.

Gaborik looks like Gaborik to me. he fact that he is being upstaged by a flashier player now doesn't mean he needs to try to change his game, or become something he isn't. I have no idea what people expect him to be, but we have a goal scoring Gaborik who is playing through injuries, scoring 3rd OT playoff goals, and leading the team in goal scoring on a regular basis.

Richards, to me looks different this season than last, and looked different last season than the previous one in Dallas. This concerns me a mite bit more. While Gbaorik is just sort of being himself, Richards could genuinely be declining at an early age. I could chalk it up to a slow start a few games back. Now I'm really starting to wonder.

Pissed off we gave Boston a free point, thank god they took it in the shootout cause that would've been a hugely demoralizing loss IMO...Nash is just fun to watch. Thinking they continue the winning streak on thursday.

I expect him to play with a little more energy when he's on a cold streak. I'm not gonna call for the trading of Gaborik or anything, but sometimes his lack of intensity leaves me bothered. I don't expect him to turn into a player like Nash overnight, but he needs to do the things that make him a successful player. Although, a lot of it has to with Richards, IMO, and I kind of agree with you. I'm a little concerned that he's starting to decline, although it's only been 12 games, he's looked REALLY bad at times. There's still time for him to improve, but he needs to step it up soon.

We won but I don't feel great about it. Gave up a 3 goal lead, two of them in less than a minute, power play still abysmal, failed to capitalize on the 5 -3.

Hank did a tremendous job, great game by Hagelin and Stepan, I loved the shootout goal by Nash!

Look at the standings and remove 2 pts for us and I imagine you would feel alot better!

You don't want to be one of those teams that all teams circle in the calendar as a "4 pts"-night...

Who the hell cares how you win against the best team in the conference in their own building?

Boston always plays tough in the Garden.

So I'm curious--Why has Del Zotto been completely banished from the power play? I get that it hasn't been working and Torts might want to try some things, but MDZ has had all of 1 second of power play time over the course of the last three games.

I suppose it would be one thing to keep him off if the PP suddenly started clicking, but there has been no change. Keeping your best PMD off of a dysfunctional power play for an extended period is just stupid--especially considering how well Del Zotto started this season.

Because he's nervous with the puck and afraid to take the shot. Stralman is doing a much better job there imo. But what Girardi is doing on the PP is a riddle.

While Nash was great, the penalty that he took was real stupid and gave Boston a goal.

Hagelin-Stepan-Nash is out best line. I'd like to see Gaborik-Richard with either Kreider or Miller and see what happens.

Stralman is getting better and better and is slowly turning into the PMD he always been supposed to be. MCD is looking to be top a top 10 dman at the end of this season.

Great win!!!
