I thought he had an intriguing stint with the team. Obviously we played him at the end there to meet the requirements of the ED.

Still, guy is young yet.

He looked like a decent depth player to me, so I'm okay with this regardless of the expansion draft stuff.

Every team takes a chance on a guy or two like this, he's only 24. Maybe he's an AK Bars Kazan superstar in two years or whatever but it's not a big investment.

this is 99% about the Expansion Draft, NYR are now fully compliant with the minimums of qualified players to expose.

He could easily be waived in the fall if/when he doent earn a roster spot

he is still young, showed a bit of talent, not worse than some guys we dressed in recent years, such as Malone

There's talent there for sure. Whether he'll ever fulfill his potential I don't know and in the majority of the games he was whatever but considering his age I don't mind bringing him back especially since it meets the ED requirement. As a 13th F he's fine and if he ever sucks or if you need to clear room you can waive him and send him down with no cap hit.

He should be great for the wolfpack even if he doesn't make it with the big club. It sure feels like the front office are trying to create a winning environment in Hartford and stop the suckage.

Never forget: One of only 2 Rangers waiver pick ups to record a point on debut.

Guess who the other one is?

The great Erik Christensen?

Edit: apparently our 1st line center did not record a point until his 9th game

I'm hoping that he takes this offseason seriously and trains extremely hard. There will be at least 1-2 positions open this year in the bottom 6. He is a guy that could play PP but he needs to put in the work in order to get there.

Maybe he will work with Ben Prentiss, the Rangers new S&C consultant.

What's interesting to me is that he's also exactly the kind of player an expansion team would look to pick up.

I don't see why. He's 24 and hasn't shown enough yet to be a regular in the NHL. Fast and Lindberg are only a year older and are much better players. If GMGM can work out a contract with either of them, he would almost certainly do that rather than select Puempel. If it comes down to Grabner, Holden or Puempel, I think Puempel is still last on his list.

Puempel is the only player the Rangers are exposing that has much of an upside compared to where they've been. Yeah, he hasn't made it yet, but he did look better and more productive in NY than he did in Ottawa. Expansion teams have taken players like that before.

While this is true, I don't see them taking Puempel over Fast/Lindberg

Nope. Bernie Geoffrion.

cripes, Puempel and Boom Boom in the same sentence

my hope is Gorton turns him into a similarly promising but unproven prospect,
but who improves and meets his potential,
like when Etem was swapped for Jensen

(well my first hope is that GMGM chooses him in the Exp draft.
or Catenacci ;^)

Exactly. With first, second line, and power play ice-time, Puempel is probably a 20 goal/35 point scorer.

Doesn't mean the Rangers should be using him that way.

Fast and Lindberg are what they are, but do not have the same offensive upside.

Depends what LV is looking for when they draft a Ranger.
