Confirmed with Link: Rakell to re-sign with the Penguins (6 years, $5 million AAV)

If we trade for a player like Rak it CAN cost us a 1st rounder.. so why not just pay 500k more and get Rak for long term? I like it.
Exactly. Rakell fit on both top lines really well. He's not a tweener 3rd line guy playing above his ability.

I am very happy with it. I mean look at it like him at 5M or ERod at 3M. I'll foot the extra 2M for him.

He wasn’t going to take anything less than market, IMO. As others have said, Pittsburgh just isn’t a huge draw and who knows what we would have wound up with if he walked.
Can anyone blame him? I'd ask for the most money as well. This is his BIG contract.

He ain't handing out discounts to any team.

5M for his services is acceptable. He was comparable to Rust on the top line so I'm more than happy paying Guentz, Rust, Rakell in the 5-6M range. It's fair.

& The "INSIDERS" had no idea he was going to resign, The prevailing wisdom was he was going to free agency

Mr. Tough Negotiator sure overpaid here. I’m surprised Rakell stayed to be honest, but maybe he knew he wouldn’t get paid more or for longer anywhere else.
How did he overpay really?

Rakell would get 5M from someone else than you'd be left scrambling for an ERod or Kapanen to fill his place.

4.5M in a perfect world would be ideal. An extra 500k for a top 6 wing is better than an overpaid bottom 6 guy.

Think about it. This might irritate you but the grass on the other side might infuriate you much more.

This makes the trade even better. A prospect from the only position we have any prospects in, plus everyone's 2 least favorite players for a longterm top 6 winger. Not bad

Yes it was a good deal all around for us. I can be irritated with other Hextall situations but this is one I'm content with.

It cost the Avs 6.125 x 8 to re-sign Nichuskin. Rakell is overwhelmingly the better player of the two and both contracts end when they are 35. Just for some context of what the market looks like outside our little bubble.

Imagine your hometown discount as defending champs was 6.125 on max term for a player who scored more than 14g and 34pts for the first time as a 27 year old?

I was huge on Rakell coming here, the term is a bit longer than I'd like, but that seems to be the trend.

Nichuskin's contract isn't great but Rakell for sure isn't even close to him

Rakell does a lot of things well but he’s not a scorer…if we end up with Trocheck as 2C, he’s not much of a scorer either….for a team that seriously lacked finish last season, we’ll be deeply missing Geno’s goal scoring ability…unless we trade for P.Kane or something, L2 is basically gonna be your checking line lol

Ummm... the stats say otherwise. Both in the regular season and the playoffs. First season Nichushkin does anything above mediocre and he had to be on a line with MacKinnon and Landeskog to do it?

By what measure do you feel he's better than Rakell and why hasn't it translated to any kind of personal success before this year and these linemates?

Yeah, from being a fan of and watching Rakell as much as I could over the years, he is not a player that needs any specific linemates or deployments to have success. He really can create his own offense and creates for others. He adapts his game to his linemates, we saw him doing a lot of playmaking last year for example, but he's a great trigger man too.

I'm looking forward to the fan base being able to get a longer look at the guy and gain some appreciation for the different aspects of his game. He is well worth his cap hit right now, and if he sucks in 3 or 4 years so much the better, helps with our rebuild.
