Lacrosse has come to an end. Two games today, lost em both which means a fourth place finish. The top three teams were Lower Cape, Nantucket and the Vineyard. Funny how it works out like that.
My little guy scored in the last game, sailed a shot wide, and rung a post as well. He was so pumped this time to score. Lots of friends and family there to see it. All the teams played so incredible today, great sportsmanship, great hustle. For him to play as well as he did, and score, up against that competition was really cool to see. For the first time we could feel his pride from the sidelines.
Yet, when he left the fields he was adamant that he was finished with lacrosse. I chatted with coach after the game, privately, to thank him for coaching and giving his time. I highlighted how this season was opposite of last year (the coach that dropped the F bomb in the finals, and the team was extremely toxic toward each other) and how all of the kids improved so much, but most of all how the attitudes of all of them were all so positive and supportive even during the hard losses today. This is what youth sports should be. I told him he found a great balance of firm and fun, and it really showed all season
Dude almost cried and said “thank god you felt that way. It’s so hard with a group of ten year olds. I never know how much i can push them”. Then launched into praise for my kid, and how he was the most improved player they had, the best player on the field in the last game, and how easy it was to coach him because he focused in practice and followed every instruction ever given. He let us know about a summer scrimmage game program as well
I relayed all of this hugely positive feedback to my son…and now all of a sudden he is warming up to playing the summer program AND next season
Coaching is everything
