Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Race 8: Boys and Bullets (Francisco Martinez/Ilias Tapsas) rocked the horse racing landscape today at 84-to-1. The winner paid $170.40/$66.20/$35.80. The exacta was more than $1,300. The $.50 tri was a gigantic $19,000.
Mahoning Valley (Ohio):
  • Nearing Closing Day: The meet has two more cards including closing day on Saturday. Ohio racing continues at Belterra (near Cincinnati) from 4/25/2024-10/5/2024 and Thistledown (near Cleveland) from 4/22/2024-10/10/2024.
  • Leading Jockey: Luis Rivera has a 4-win lead.
  • Leading Trainer: Jay Bernardini had a rare cold day, 7 0-1-0, but still holds a 5-win lead.
  • Pick 6 Jackpot: $101,058.00
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 2: Raise the Bar (John Velazquez/Wesley Ward) won the 2-year-old filly race, a field of 12 starters out for the first time. The secret that Ward is an exceptional trainer with first-timers and 2-year-olds is long established. He is 24% with both 2-year-olds and first-time starters lifetime, this year he is 3 2-0-0 (67%) and 21 8-3-3- (38%), respectively. Always look at Ward's stable for babies this time of year.

Turf Paradise (Arizona):
  • Pick 6 Carryover: Began today at $267,000+.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 2: Perfect Shances (Walter Rodriguez/Wesley Ward) won the debut race. Ward another winner in a 2-year-old race, now 4 3-0-0 this year. Rodriguez is perhaps the only rider I can cite from El Salvador.
Turf Paradise (Arizona):
  • Pick 6: will have a carryover of $348,928.00. Good publicity for a track and region that needs it.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Chalk Ruled: Favorites won six of the first even races and eight of 10. The stars were out today and will be out all weekend. This is the U.S.'s top track at the moment.
  • Winning Riders: Frankie Dettori, William Buick, John Velazquez, Irad Ortiz, Jr., Jose Ortiz and defending Apprentice of the Year Axel Concepcion, the lone jockey with multiple wins, were among those who rode winning rides.
  • Race 6: Kehoe Beach (John Velazquez/Wesley Ward) gave the trainer another victory in the 2-year-old column. Ward is now 6 3-0-0 this year in such races. Kehoe Beach is a $450,000 son to Omaha Beach.

  • Race 9: Master of the Seas (William Buick/ Charlie Appleby) was sent off the favorite and won the $600,000 Grade I Maker's Mark Mile by more than two lengths. The Irish-bred has earned over $2.2 million lifetime and sports a record of 17 9-3-2. The 5-year-old Dubawi colt has won four of his past five starts, all graded stakes which includes the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: $5.98 million.
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 5 returned in excess of $73,000. Favorites accounted for zero wins in the session. Winners were 5-10-4-7-3.
  • Saturday's Apple Blossom: If the "1" Free Like a Girl wins, that will be quite the story. She is a Louisiana-bred and will be out for the 38th time. She won an allowance race last month at Oaklawn but stars in her home state. In total, the 5-year-old has 17 wins.

  • Horacio De Paz has less than 10 years training but has a decent run going 8 4-2-1 since April 11. He worked for, among others, Hall of Famers Todd Pletcher and Wayne Lukas.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Card: A good card with four stakes the highlight.
  • Races:Three straight near-photo finishes.
    • Race 9: Coastal Mission (Arnaldo Bocachica/Jeff Runco) nipped Prince of Jericho (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) in the $100,000 Frank Y. Whiteley. It was THAT close:
    1713064458707.png
    • Race 10: Ain't Da Beer Cold (Jevian Toledo/Kenneth Cox) nipped Jaime Rodriguez/Jamie Ness) to win the $100,000 Native Dancer Stakes.
    • Race 11: Ladro Di Fichi (Jackie Davis/Bonnie Lucas) nipped A Girl Named Jac (Raul Mena/Ferris Allen) in the day's finale.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Handle: $26 million.
  • Race 7: Roses for Debra (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Christophe Clement) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Giant's Causeway Stakes.
  • Race 9: Beaute Cachee (Frankie Dettori/Chad Brown) won the Grade I $600,000 Jenny Wiley at 25-to-1. Brown entered four in the race and this was his biggest value. Dettori, who is looking for a Kentucky Derby mount, made a rare visit to the Commonwealth and afterwards told reporter Gabby Gaudet that he is trying to "sell myself to the Kentucky people."
  • Race 10: Encino (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won the $500,000 Grade 3 Lexington Stakes and with it earned 20 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby.

  • Race11: The $1 Pick returned more than $91,000.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: $12.8 million.
  • Race 8: Skelly (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen), one of the best sprinters in the country and potentially the world, won the Grade 3 $500,000 Count Fleet Handicap. He is 14 9-4-0 lifetime including an incredible 9 7-1-0 at Oakland with seven straight wins. He entered off a second place finish in Saudi Arabia and currently has wins in eight of his last nine starts. The jockey (7) and trainer (8) have both won this race more than any competitor.
  • Race 11: Adare Manor (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the $1,250,000 Apple Blossom. The horse looked like a stick out and as such I used Free Like a Girl (58-to-1) and Shotgun Hottie (9-to-1) underneath but alas they finished 3 and 4, respectively.

Good decision by the connections of Encino to enter the Lexington. Encino was on the also eligible list following the win, awaiting a top 20 horse to defect. This morning, No More Time was slightly injured in a workout and is now off the trail. Thus, Encino has become eligible to enter the race.

The owner of Muth, who is trained by Bob Baffert, is awaiting a Kentucky judge's ruling as to whether the horse can be part of the Derby field. Churchill Downs has ruled Baffert's horses ineligible. The judge is awaiting input from the Commonwealth's Attorney General. .The decision could be made this week and as early as tomorrow.

Was opening day delayed/canceled by rain or something else? The schedule on the website lists Friday as opening day but the release and elsewhere says Saturday was the opener. I know it caused some confusion with a trotter-player.
yeah, everything was shifted back a week due to weather.... Qualifiers were run on the 9th, but yeah, that's been their tradition to run FRI/SAT.....hope that link will continue to work as I do get their updates and will try to pass them along here when warranted

  • Amir Zedan's plea to have Muth enter this year's Kentucky Derby was denied by a Kentucky judge. No surprise but Zedan plans to appeal. Churchill Downs has suspended Bob Baffert and any horse he trains is not eligible to participate in any of their track properties. While I think Churchill's suspension of Baffert is overkill, the owner had opportunity to switch trainers by the instituted deadline many weeks ago but he chose to maintain course.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Card: Five of the nine races were $100,000 MSW.
  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $76,000. The $3 Pick 3 (that could be the highest minimum bet in the nation) paid over $56,000.
  • Race 7:

  • Race 5: Waves of Mischief (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh) debuted to win on turf at 5-to-2. Purchased by Qatar Racing at $575,000, the Into Mischief filly looked sparkling.

  • Race 2: Ultima Grace (John Velazquez/Wesley Ward) debuted to an admirable victory to give the trainer another win in the 2-year-old division. Ward is a brilliant 7 4-0-0 in 2024 and maybe more impressively he is 26 10-3-3 (38%/62%) with first-time starters this year. Ward is almost always successful with babies but his percentage this year with 2-year-olds is 13% better than his career average. The American Pharoah filly, who was homebred, was sent off at 1-to-9.

  • Joel Rosario rode three winners.
  • The Meet: Keeneland's Spring Meet is one of the most anticipated. Lots of young talent especially on display. Leading Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione (13 wins). Leading Trainer: Wesley Ward (7 wins).
