I know that it is possible for someone to actually be hit, checked, held, obstructed whatever and still take a dive...but I really wish the officials were forced to call one or the other. My personal opinion is that diving is the worse offense because it goes against the principals of fair sportsmanship. The other is usually just a simple thinly masked case of attempted homicide. No big deal.
