Given we KNEW goalie was an issue last summer, I don't thave much faith that gets addressed this summer.

Our front office is convinced the rest of our pieces is good enough that we can get by with the kind of goaltending we have gotten
I think the front office just views goaltending in general as extremely volatile -- which I think is generally true with only a tiny handful of exceptions, like Vasi. Even Helle who will have 3 vezina trophies has been terrible in the playoffs. Markstrom was a "huge get" for the Devils and "solved" their goaltending and for the most part this series (outside of the last few periods) and this season he's been pretty damn bad. Why invest a lot in such a volatile position? You can spend $15M on goaltending and still get shit play or you can spend $4M on it and get incredible play. There's a healthy middle of course and don't get me wrong, Freddie's unavailability and Koochie's inconsistency drive me crazy too but there really are no perfect solutions to goaltending in this league.

lol yeah listening to that interview, definitely sounds like the team absolutely lit into each other at the first intermission. Interesting that he mentioned that it was the things they said to each other that got it going, and not anything the coaches did, which I actually love. Wonder which guys stepped up and laid down the law?

I think I saw somewhere that 1st INT was mostly Aho yelling in the locker room at the team, Rod didn't say much nor did Staal. I don't know how true that is but I believe it. Aho is destined to be the next C for this team. Slavin would be a great captain too if Aho weren't just perfect for it.

I can tell you guys the secret that Aho didn't want to tell. I think he gave the VittuSaatanaPerkele speech in his native language. It is used to scare bears away.

I think Kooch can still be "the guy" depending on how the rest of this playoff run goes. Obviously, you go with Freddie if he's ready to return, but I think the second half of that game showed the team can play in front of Kotchetkov. Getting a big win like that will hopefully help in getting Kooch out of his own head.

The Canes can play with a zamboni driver in net sometimes. And that's how they played from 3rd period on.

But from here on out, they're going to be playing contenders, and PK is going to have to carry his weight, or they'll be out quick.

PK looking a lot more like Ndjelkovic than Anderson.

New Jersey had the 2nd best PK & 3rd best PP in the regular season. But I agree it won’t come as easy against the Caps. The injuries for the Devils definitely factors in.
addendum - if the post i saw from a devil fan is true, it should be noted that from the time luke hughes was injured, they were tied for 1st in the league on the PP during that time.

Yeah NJ had a fantastic special teams this year, and that didn't have much of a drop off after the injuries.

IMHO, the first 2OT game killed them. Needing to play 5 defensemen that many minutes that night, they were noticeably gassed in Game 4. And after the first period last night, they looked like a team physically and mentally hanging on for dear life. We might have lost Game 3, but that game won us the series.

Finally found a clip online of what the Devils coaches were complaining about last night. Start of the video, Hischier seals off Jarvis, Seigenthalar retrieves the puck. Blake pressures Seigenthalar, who attempts to chip it past Jarvis.

It does look like Jarvis gloves it down, and Blake is the next one to touch it. It’s close and it’s chaotic, so it’s not easy to tell, but I’m sure they probably submitted it to the league after the game to say “Hey, I think your guys screwed up here.”

I'm having a hard time seeing what's going on there, but they don't have to call a hand pass just because it touches the glove. They usually do, but there is some interpretation as to whether it was intentionally directed to a teammate.

i dont see it , I even slowed to .25 speed , nothing , but I did hear the devil say kill my whole family

So who would’ve thought before the season we’d be the first team to advance to the 2nd round this year? I thought we’d make the playoffs easily and possibly win a round depending on matchup but didn’t expect such a short series in round 1 like past years. Of course the Devils were extremely banged up and an easier matchup but still this season has already surpassed pretty much all expectations, no?

Re-tooling year after letting like a half dozen key free agents walk, Rantanen fiasco, and still winning a playoff series is pretty damn impressive. Seriously credit to this team, Rod, front office, etc. Anything else this year is gravy and set up just insanely well for the foreseeable future.

All that said if we don’t see Nikishin next game, we riot.

Do you even HF26 bro?

Regardless of any positives, we've got a pretty vocal number who focus mainly on the negatives, so short of a Cup, at some point we can expect a lot more bitching and moaning.

For the record, I'm with you. In the book The Celestine Prophecy the author likens the energy (positive or negative) we put out into the world as to a stone tossed into a still pond. The effect isn't just the initial plop; there are ripples that spread well beyond the initial point of impact.

I looked back at posts after the Canes went down 0-3 in the first. The following members posted something positive: AhosDatsyukian, StankyandJanky, hurricure, AntonDubinchuk, Stickpucker, BigDaddy, and, believe it or not, Borsig. I credit those with assisting in the win. And for all those throwing out just negativity: you need to go to your room and think about what you've done!!

With the way the ref waves it off I wonder if Jersey played it enough before Blake corrals it to negate any hand pass?

That's certainly possible. Like I said, it's very close.

The 1st goal by the Devils was also close to being offside on the initial entry. It would have come down to what qualified as "possession" by Haula, as it was in the air on the entry with Haula using his glove to try and corral it.

I am hard but fair. I know this team can score like this against a battered defense. I was skeptical about us holding pucks out of the net but I felt we had a chance if we played like we did recently, and better.

I also think it's possible we beat washington but I have concerns that the easy out NJ was will make us complacent. I don't think theres a team in the league we can't beat. I also think there isn't a team left in the east that can't beat us in 7. I think FLA would destroy us. I also think Toronto would cut our defense to pieces and expolit burns, and our non controlled match ups on the road.

I felt we had life last night, way more I did than game 3. My biggest concern vs washington is thier ability to score, Not match thier physicality and the ease of this series.
