Great win. Series over.

I took a browse on the Devils forum and a lot of posters were incensed with Markstrom's performance. On the one hand, I get it, but on the other, he was the only reason the Devils didn't lose in the 3rd period and OT1. He was Florida Bob 2023 level good. Felt like Kochetkov had to make 5 good saves over the entire course of the evening and Markstrom had to make 30 good saves.

Boys will need rest, and I bet they have today and tomorrow off. I could see Caps closing tonight and both teams being a little rusty in game 1.

Regarding goaltending, Kochetkov needs to settle down. We don't need elite goaltending but we need him to be steady. His rebound control was nightmarish for most of this game, Justin Peters level goaltending. He settled in the third. On the one hand, he didn't have to do much, but on the other, it was reassuring that Kochetkov could handle a light workload. We know he does better when he sees more action. I'm glad Rod stuck with him and didn't throw in Spencer Martin after it went 0-3 or 3-4. It wouldn't have changed the outcome, but it would have shaken Kochetkov's confidence for round 2.

I would be shocked. Who is available that is an upgrade on Anderson's ability AND availability? Neither Gibson or Demko qualify as they are on the shelf as long or longer than Freddy. Nobody left as a UFA worth a damn. All I got left for hopes is that Swayman and Boston are done with each other and Boston looks to reset. Otherwise, I don't see anyone available.

Same. The thing is that Andersen is still performing at a pretty high level, and is probably capable of doing so for at least a few more seasons before (actually) aging out.

Given we KNEW goalie was an issue last summer, I don't thave much faith that gets addressed this summer.

Our front office is convinced the rest of our pieces is good enough that we can get by with the kind of goaltending we have gotten
Last summer I think they still had faith in PK putting it all together, and both he and Freddie were signed. That ship may have sailed with this recent stretch, and Freddie is a UFA. I’m not saying they will do anything drastic because as others have said there isn’t much available out there, but the situation has certainly changed from last summer.

The only possible name out there that could be the guy would be Saros - but 1 - Trotz is too stubborn to go rebuild after just 1 bad season (even though the prior season was going a similar direction until the U2 concert as well) and 2 - Nashville literally JUST traded the guy that would make him a possibility this past summer.

A healthy Demko would be an upgrade but as you said, dude is constantly on the mend even more than Freddy. Freddy's just flat out better than Gibson at this point.

Kochetkov is such a delicate balance at this point. We've seen the guy be absolutely lights out and we've seen him be a tire fire. I legitimately wonder about the guys eyesight Ricky Vaughn style considering how good he tends to be against high danger chances usually (which are almost always in tight) and how he fares with mid and low danger chances. The 3 that beat him in the first were all high danger but we've seen him let in a few that just make me go "OK, how?" over the last 6 weeks.

I pray to all that is make believe that we avoid Soros. Guy is good. But he is small and aging. Once the reflexes go a bit, his size will be super exposed. The reason why an older guy like Freddy can look so good is he is massive. Soros....no thanks.

Saros, maybe if Nashville sees the writing on the wall?

I think Kooch can still be "the guy" depending on how the rest of this playoff run goes. Obviously, you go with Freddie if he's ready to return, but I think the second half of that game showed the team can play in front of Kotchetkov. Getting a big win like that will hopefully help in getting Kooch out of his own head.

lol yeah listening to that interview, definitely sounds like the team absolutely lit into each other at the first intermission. Interesting that he mentioned that it was the things they said to each other that got it going, and not anything the coaches did, which I actually love. Wonder which guys stepped up and laid down the law?

Yeah I don't have us getting past the caps but who knows. We sure can't do it with PK in net playing like he did last night.
We won't be scoring 5 against the caps and Thompson. We scored 5 against an AHL defense mostly.
I wish we had the ol Foegelehound vs the Caps.

His play that series will he talked about for generations.

What a privilege it’s been watching him grow into the player and personality and leader he’s become. Very proud to have a guy like him representing our hockey club.

What a bad penalty call, KK really sold that contact, huh

There wasn't then and still isn't really an available upgrade. I mean Markstrom was probably the best goalies to change teams last off season and we torched him. He gave up quite a few softies and lost his composure on Svech for some reason.

Also Hellebuck, Ottenger, Bennington, Thompson have all given up goals that we would crucify Freddie for.
