Rumor: R&P Thread | Oilers Sign G Samuel Jonsson (3-Years ELC), RW Quinn Hutson (2-Years, $875k AAV), LD Atro Leppanen (1-Year, $975k)

People keep saying that and that he has been good the last 20 games and dudes not even at 0.5 ppg in the last 20.
The whole team wasnt that good in the last 30 games (barely over .500) so its difficult to get a read on a specific player.
He has shown that he can be a reliable player when the intensity of the games is elevated.

He was a 0.91 ppg player in the last 2 years combined with LA in the playoffs....they leaned on him quite a lot.
He wont get the PP time with this team but I am not too worried about him as a playoff performer.

In all honestly I dont think that we can use much of this regular season to properly evaluate the entire team.
Its been very clear that the team now sees the regular season as nothing more than a vehicle to get to game 83.

I have been curious for months now to see what this team looks like when they are 100% emotionally invested in the game.
Tomorrow cant come soon enough.

This and in so many different ways.

The injuries are one thing, but one aspect or another of the team was off at rotating intervals. The whole team sucked in October, then 97, 29 and 74 (believe it or not) were fantastic from there until the end of January. We won a lot of games on that basis even though almost every other part of the roster wasn't working.

Then the moment the rest of the roster especially up front got it together, 97 and 29 were either out injured or in 97's case playing poorly/injured combined with atrocious goaltending. Then when we started to get some saves from Pickard down the stretch the whole team was hurt limiting the impact.

I still have some confidence that things might randomly click together at the right time.

Its been a weird season for sure.
Even the injuries seemed weird. Ekholms injury looked like absolutely nothing. It was such a nothing play that I almost allowed myself to think that he was sandbagging just to get some rest.
Best dman on the team...he will be missed for sure in this series.
The other Dmen need to step it up defensively...the whole team does.
I think they will.
Glad the 82 game exibition season is over.
Let the real games begin.

To your point: you don't get to a 98% penalty kill without raising your level of execution to near perfect... so this team is KNOWN to be able to do that.

And this year's healthy roster is far better than last year IMO.
Frederic > Foegele
Arvi > McLeod
Skinner = 2024 Holloway
Walman > Ceci
Emberson = Desharnais/2024 Broberg
Kane ?? > Injured Kane
Healthy Nurse > Injured Nurse

Ekholm is the only big blow, we shouldn't need him to get past LA unless the refs put away the whistle.

I don't think this team gets by LA sadly. Just too many injuries and not enough productive depth plus the same shit goaltending that has let us down every year.

Next year has a lot more promise. In fact I think it is THE year. The big thing that must change in the summer is in net, you can't waste the last 20-something year of McDrai with Stu stinking it up another season. Bouch should also not be re-signed to anything more than 8 years/$9M.

Then, don't spend stupid money on UFAs, get one of Brown or Perry back on a 1 yr/$1M deal, sign Frederic to a try-me deal of $2M/1 yr if he shows he fits against LA, trade Kane to wherever with a later pick to dump his salary, dump Janmark who is probably entering wheels-fall-off territory next year, and roll with:

RNH-McDavid-Hyman
Frederic-Draisaitl-Arvidsson
Podkolzin-Henrique-Brown/Perry
Jones-Philp-?
?, ?

Ekholm-Bouch
Nurse-Walman
Kulak-Emberson
Stecher

?
Pickard

No obvious holes, and depending on how Savoie, Berezkin, Tomasek, and Hutson show out, we'll have a good rotation at 12th, 13th, and 14th F.

I thought the depth scoring did just fine when our top guys were out. If healthy - Hyman, RNH, Kane, Frederick, Skinner, Arviddson, Perry, Henrique, Brown... thats pretty solid scoring depth lol.

Savoie won't be a 12th F. He will be top 9 all year. Tomasek will likely get a look for the first few months too.

I do think we move Henrique out, and I can't see Jones on the opening night roster.

I'd better not see any "Keep Nuge Forever" crap this offseason. Absolute meme of a player at 5v5 on what's trending towards an albatross contract. He's nowhere near good enough to warrant such catering. Loyalty towards RNH tier players is some straight up Vancouver Canucks behaviour. If Tampa can get rid of a genuine Hall of Famer like Steven Stamkos for the betterment of their team, we can put RNH in a Canucks/Rangers/Hurricanes jersey and wash our hands of this power play merchant.

Lots of holes up front imo. Need to find a goalie and a couple forwards. Maybe some of the Euro signings hit or maybe you get growth from Podkolzin or Savoie, but I think they still need to find a legit winger this summer. D will be passable assuming Ekholm is capable of playing, which is also unfortunately a big question mark as he's not getting any younger.

Every winger in that top 6 can't be trusted anymore. RNH, Hyman, and Arvidsson were all brutal and will all continue to trend downwards. Frederic doesn't feel like a player who should be there even if they decide to keep him. Barring significant additions that forward group is a 2 man team.

My fantasy trades:

Bouchard for Josi. If the Preds are going to reload (and they really should) then I can't see their captain being okay with playing out the string in his 35-38 year old seasons. The Preds are known for finding and fixing top four D (okay well they were before Trotz) and maybe they can coach some sense into Bouch while getting almost ten years younger on the back end. Josi would get one last shot at a Cup while reuniting with Ekholm, who I am sure could talk him into waiving for Edmonton.

Skinner and O'Reilly for Gibson (50% retained). Yes we give up a very good prospect here but it's beyond necessary at this point. Stu can't be anywhere near our net next year. That's that.

Trade Kane with our 2026 3rd to Columbus, Chicago or Boston for FCs, all teams with tons of cap next year.

Re-sign Frederic 1x $2M.
Re-sign one of Brown or Perry 1x $1M.

RNH-McDavid-Hyman
Frederic-Drai-RV
Podz-Henrique-Brown/Perry
Janmark-Philp-Tomasek
Jones

Ekholm-Josi
Nurse-Walman
Kulak-Emberson
Stecher

Gibson
Pickard

$2.75M in cap which is $5.5M at the deadline. Easy to go out and fill any remaining holes at that point, like picking up a rental LW to bump Frederic down to the third line where he should probably be. That would easily be the most well-rounded team of the McDrai era and be able to play any way they needed to.

That Josi trade is a no. Josi is too old.

If we are trading Bouchard, the d we get back should be a similar age.
