What else is he going to say?

"Every player on the team was crap except for Brodeur and I did a crap job coaching?"
I'd take that. And its pretty true. The team goes in looking like a bunch of spoiled brats, with their charter flights and all expenses paid vacation for their entire family, while all the other teams (USA, Finland, Sweden, ect) had to book their own tickets. The arrogance running through Canadian hockey is appalling, booking their charter flight return Sunday because they expected to be in the gold medel game, and were rushing around yesterday to see if they could bump it up after the loss.

Canada deserved to lose.

I wish he said that.

Quinn is an idiot. I hope JFJ grows some balls and fires him at the end of the season.

That's just not something you're going to say if you don't want to alienate people you work with. Being frank like that would damage professional relationships, which in the long run is more important to these people than a stupid little tournament.

Why would Canada book anything other than Sunday? You expect to win, all countries expect to win so booking anything before is completely ridiculous. What day would you have booked?

What would it damage?

Sure doesn't stop a guy like Darryl Sutter from calling his player crap if they were (and he does all the time).

The itenarary is rediculous. They had a planned celebration and everything to, pardon the cliche, planned the parade before they even set foot in Turin.

Personally, I don't even think they should have given these brats the chartered flight. At best, book their plane tickets and a couple rooms in the Olympic village.

I don't entirely agree with Mike Modano said, but from what I've heard, it sounds like more then a few players found the prima-donna Canadian treatment repulsive.

I remember when I was being criticized before the Olympics for insulting Quinn's coaching and Team Canada in general. I was right 100%.

Apples and oranges.

Let's say Pat Quinn says something like 'Lecavalier and Thornton were pretty crap for us. Chris Pronger was totally out of his element and his crap play let us down. What the hell was he thinking?'

Free agency rolls around in July. Let's say those guys are free agents. Do you think they'll want to play for Quinn after he trashed them in public?

The whole team was garbage, but professionally, it probably doesn't pay to speak the truth. These are pretty big egos after all, and it is a pretty small league. Eventually you'll have to work with one of these guys and there could be unnecessary problems.

Well what were they supposed to do? Plan for an early exit and hope for the best?

So making them walk ten miles to school with holes in their shoes would be the way to get more out of them? Team Canada do things first class which I think is something to be proud of and makes players want to be a part of. No complaints after the win in 2002 now all the sudden Hockey Canada has had a memory wipe.

He doesn't need to say that. He could have said they were dissapointing, did not achieve what they were supposed to do, and were coming home dissapointed. Darryl Sutter takes a biweekly rip at Jarome Iginla, and Iginla still signed a 3 year contract with the Flames. I kind of wish Pat Quinn would have taken a rip at Iginla, who played like crap.

Not a "meh, oh well. everythings ok."

They didn't get this type of treatment in 2002. Moreover, not a single team got this prima-donna treatment in the entire tournament. Not Russia, not USA.

I would have been perfectly ok with Hockey Canada paying for their flight tickets and stay. But 1st class hotels while Team Russia and Team Finland stay in the Olympic village? I can't remember who it was (maybe Gretz or Quinn) said most the "leaders" on the team spent very little to no time with all the other athletes or even their own teammates. In 2002, they did.

Why was it different this time then?

Well, I'd provide you an answere if I worked for Hockey Canada.

Unfortunatly, I don't.

Why don't you ask Bob Nicholson that? Or Pat Quinn? Kind of odd that you'd ask me.

I could not recall the hockey team in 2002 spending all their time in the village. I figured the hockey team would stay with what worked.

"I would want them to know I appreciate how they all contributed their time to come here. I'm proud of them. They worked hard, but there are no guarantees."

Its funny how 90% of this thread is discussing something that Quinn did not say or at the very least taken way out of context.

I don't see why the above quote is so offensive? He's thanking people for doing something that they didn't have to do. Doing something that will, unless gold is brought home, have an entire nation criticizing, critiquing and second guessing you, your manhood and your passion for the game for the rest of your life. What he said doesn't seem so out of line.

Nope. Its quite openly known that Team Canada lived in the Olympic village and associated themselves with other athletes (not just their own teammates or the women's team, but all other athletes from different countries).

This time, as Quinn/Gretz said, their "leaders" stayed far away from the Olympic village and atmosphere and treated it almost as a vacation. What I found most appalling is that some of their "leaders" barely spent any time at all - if even - with their teammates. I can't imagine that being Sakic, who's a professional through and through, but for some reason, all signs would point to Jarome Iginla and Chris Pronger, among a few.

When they spoke to Hitch pre tourney he said there would be nothing in their lives but hockey. No sight seeing, just playing and getting ready for the next game. Looking at their schedule how could they have a vacation? How could they also be expected to schmooze with the other athletes when their families are there and they have team meetings etc? The last games may have been more relaxed from a scheduling standpoint.

I'm not trying to berate or belittle any one coach, player, or manager on Team Canada, but you've just touched on a nerve of mine that suffers an abbrasion more and more often where the NHL is concerned...

Professional relationships. Of utmost importance in the business world. and lets face it, we all know it... Sports is a business. More and more facets of commerce earning projections and opportunity costs are seeping into this sport every day. And it makes me sick.

If someone wants to keep their mouth shut in front of the mics and cameras, fine. But if you're going to open your mouth, show some honesty and integrity. "This is what I beleive is the reason that were busting our *** to get out of Italy as quick as possible, and not drawing up a game plan for the Finns." Give the audience a bit of respect. No one at home is proud. If a better effort had been seen, sure, no one would be grumbling or postulating upon conspiracy theories. However, that effort wasn't there.

With the plethora of countries playing so well, I feel no shame in Canada making an early exit. I do feel gypped out of some good hockey due to Canada. So don't go making it worse by saying how proud you are. Save your mutual back-slapping with the good ol' boys for the golf course and business luncheons, and give the public the goods as to what you would've done different.

The cliched answers have got to go.
