If he wants to play with his brothers, he can do that. He can make it known that he will sign in NJ once his contract expires. That would mean Canucks have 3 options: 1) lose him for nothing in a couple of years, 2) trade him to one of the 30 other teams as a known rental asset, or 3) trade him to NJ where he will extend long term.

What's the best option for Canucks? Can't say for sure obviously, but I think there's a decent chance NJ would offer the best package in that situation. Say Silayev is on the table, like I think he would be, you really think a team getting Hughes as a rental would top that? Even if he was a 2 playoff run rental, I doubt it.

Leafs would be all in on this. Like a serious package. One of the few players in the league they make Knies available for. They could do something like Knies + first + top prospect
