Quinn Hughes - Timeline | Expectations

He'll re-sign for 8 years at 20m per in Vancouver on July 1st 2026 at exactly 11:59:58 or the world is literally over.

Are you trying to imply that Pettersson is going to be the reason Hughes leaves?

There is a part of me that thinks EVERYTHING is Petey's fault yeah. I think MS had some points earlier on the subject. I believe thats what maybe the twitter person was implying to Sekeras and Price too yeah.

But at its heart in the dog days of summer, its just a funny meme truly.

I seen it a minute before I seen your ryppin comment and insta posted half trying to be funny and half because I believe it.

My haste, cropped a huge twitter exchange and now we're gonna hijack your thread for a minute and for that I apoligize though.

This is absolute hot take as locker room issues existed 3 years ago when it was horvat vs miller. Last year it red pettersson Vs miller, so if you ask me it points to miller being the problem as Alvin had pointed out at the ticket holder manager meeting.

I dont wanna hijack this glorious Huggy decidated thread so...

MS just hit all the hot take realities yesterday just go thru and read all the things I "liked" or follow their tirade of truths.

You literally can't even mention Pettersson and his relationship with Tocchet The Canucks here without 5 people chiming in and bringing up JT Miller out of nowhere. It's absurd.

Example one, with a small edit of my own.

edit - actually ive decided to expand on my stance, only because the meme is still above.

This is how I feel about Ep40% and what he's taken from this franchise. The actual youtube title sums it up if you dont want to watch thru and picture us as the baddies and Ep40% as Leonidas..

Give them nothing, but take from them EVERYTHING.

Hence the reaper meme. Cheers.

I'm not the GM, but if I was, this is what I would do during the summer. If Quinn wants to play with his brothers, then so be it, I'll make it happen but its gonna cost the Devils to get him two years early, when hes not older and more banged up. Players like Hoglander would be traded as we have enough smaller players, and while Garland is smaller he has that killer instinct despite his size. Chytil has had too many concussions, is he worth keeping? great wheels, average finish. If he stays, he needs to dish the puck to Garland or O'Connor whom are better finishers. Lekkerimaki, I'm not sold on the kid. I'm not sure he has the size and IQ to be a star in the NHL. Great shot but that's all I see. We have plenty of trade chips and draft capital to plug some large holes in the roster..... if we trade Quinn Hughes.

1: Quinn Hughes for : Simon Nemec, Dawson Mercer, Gritsyuk, and 2 firsts (feel free to add but don't be unrealistic). He doesn't have any trade protection so he can be traded to a team with the bodies needed to accomplish what I want, which is the cup.

2: Trade Tom Willander and the first for Marco Rossi or sign Sam Bennett. I'd lean towards Bennett as he plays a physical game, and doesn't back down. On the other hand, Rossi got 60 points playing 4th line minutes (supposedly). Theres also the possibility that Rutherford trades for Dylan Larkin. With Larkin, we could possibly see another year where we score tons like 23/24 so Pick your poison. The best teams in the playoffs play a heavy grinding game, kill you with their relentless forecheck. In this context, size matters. Obviously if you sign Bennett, you have Willander in the stable as a call up, and still have the 3 firsts.

3: Trade Nemec for K'Andre Miller/Cam York or another equally talented player. I need a good young L/side defenseman with the size and talent to play with Hronek. Miller is my first choice. Age and size matters as it aligns with they way I want the core to look.

4: We have three firsts, Willander (If hes not traded), Hoglander, and possibly Chytil to trade for better players. I was thinking of signing Tanner Jeannot and Trent Frederic for size and deterrence for the smaller players. Not sure what line Frederic plugs into but guys like that create time and space for the more skilled players.

5: The linchpin of all this working out is none other than Elias Pettersson, our supposed first line center and former 100 point player. If hes able to put on a few additional pounds and becomes a team player, we are a Cup contender. If the baldies don't think hes a team player, or his agent has quietly asked for a trade, he still has great value.

6. The coach. Given the relative youth of the roster, one Manny Malhotra is my first choice. Hes leading a young Abbotsford team deep into the playoffs with a roster, not completely devoid of talent but has enough good players to make a difference, hes pushing all the right buttons. If not, pick your poison.

What you end up with is a fairly balanced lineup with both size, speed and, truculence. A highly mobile defense that can shut down opposing teams best lines. Both Hronek and Miller are capable of putting up 50 points each, and make good outlet passes, and you have spares in Willander and Forbort in case of injury. As I said, I'm not sold on Lekkerimaki, and unless we can package him with a first to get a 70ish point RW not named Boeser, he stays on line 2. Boeser will get his 8X8 contract, just not from the Canucks. We've got too much retention on the books already to be taking on a slow footed player that will only get slower. Canucks fans get attached to certain players too easily, we cant allow that to slow the progress of creating a cup contender.

D pairings

1: K'Andre Miller---Filip Hronek

2: M Petey---Tyler Myers

3: D Petey---Victor Mancini

Spares: Forbort-L---Willander-R

Forwards

1: Debrusk---E Petey---Mercer

2: Jeannot---Bennett/Rossi---Lekkerimaki ***trade?

3: O'Connor---Chytil ***trade?---Garland

4: Joshua---Blueger---Sherwood

***Possibly Frederic

Goal

1: Demko

2: Lankinen

This is just my two cents, pick it apart, agree with it......all this made sense in my head for some reason. None of this takes the cap in mind. I'm too lazy to look up cap hits.

The trade is fine from a Devils perspective. If we added more - we'd ask for retention. Something to think about from the "we can trade 2 years of Quinn anywhere." We've been going back and forth on that for a few weeks in Devil land, and it's hard for us to figure out which team it would come from.

It's a combination of who has the Nemec tier of prospect (and others) to offer?
Who has other prospects to offer, because roster players on contenders aren't going to be all that great?
Who has the picks left to offer certainly 1 but maybe 2 firsts?
Who is close enough to a Cup to go all in like this - for just two years of this assuming he's gone?

If you start with the playoff 'contenders':

Dallas? - They have Miro and Harley - probably don't need to add a Quinn.
TB ? - One more run for two years all-in? They have no picks left to trade and not many prospects at this point?
Colorado? - They've traded a way a TON - so I'm not sure they have anything left to move in this window?
Edmonton - no 27 1st - but maybe here? But who's that prospect that can really help you? Not much in the prospect pool right now - according to my research.
Florida has no picks and prospect pool is really limited from the last several years.

Then you have teams like:
Minny? - Has a Buium - but are they close enough to contend to risk this? 2 years of Quinn vs. 10 years of Zeev - who maybe could 75-80% of Quinn?

Rangers? - Maybe. Just maybe. They have picks, players and some prospects if they think this core is getting old, have Sullivan, try to strike lightning in a bottle. But to go all in for two years, that would sink Drury if it doesn't work. Start with Perrault, 1st, an Otthman/Schneider, something else?

Devils have some kind of a combo of a Nemec, Anton Silayev, Seamus Casey, Gristyuk, 26 & 27 firsts, Dawson Mercer - they also have transitional players like a Hamilton whom could help transition the kids to bigger roles.

Will say this tho - Devils are in a weird place too. This price is going to go down if it doesn't happen this summer. Also - this is probably a Summer move for everyone - and sooner than later. I can't imagine teams having the same assets in mid-August to move for something like this - than they do right now pre-2025 draft. Certainly NJ, and a team like NYR, need to know cap structure and want to make improvements with the assets mentioned potentially. I just don't see Van moving him though that quickly.

This is a real real weird one.

Every road still leads to the Devils. Nemec stepped up during the playoffs and offered us a glimpse into his potential and it looks pretty good. Hes not what I think we need to play alongside Hronek. If young capable RHD are like hens teeth, teams would be willing to offer up a comparable LHD to slot in where Hughes was. Mercer can slot in next to EP40 and with some signings of size and grit you give the skilled players time and space. The current regime can see the writing on the wall but refuses to acknowledge the truth.

Honestly speaking, either you move quinn now to another club (not NJ) and give him the year to see how they perform. If they do well, like Rd 2 or better, then he's way more likely to stick with that new club than force his way to NJ, where let's face it, not exactly a great team there either.

Or you roll the dice and hope you can perform well enough next season to convince him to sign long term.
