So what happens Makar gets to 300 assists in less games then Hughes? He isn't better than Makar.
Makar might get more points this year, but Hughes has been defending better this year so far and last year for sure

As for the better player, you can’t go wrong with either, I give Makar the edge offensively

Strangely enough, he's been quite a bit better defensively lately, which is not something I expected.

To my eye, Hughes looks even more dominant this year than he did last year - Tocchet recently said he see the same insane drive to improve in him that he saw in Crosby. This guy isn't done yet.
Thats why I take Hughes over any dman in this league. His desire to be better every year and he does exactly that.

Still better than Oilers bottom 4 which has AHL players on it 😅
Hey! You’re taking shots at the Oilers for no reason!

A player in your team just reached an unbelievable milestone, no need to bash other teams in this thread

Sorry but that’s how I really feel

Pretty wild the records Hughes and Makar have set over the last few years.

Could very well be a Sid vs. Ovi situation (only for dmen obviously) we see the next decade or so.

Point per game defencemen were considered a thing of the past a decade ago. This new influx of talent Makar, Hughes, Fox, Josi etc. is revolutionizing the position.

well you’re certainly not going to skate faster than coffey

but tbf, coffey had a slow first year coming right in after being drafted while hughes went back to college for a year (and leetch for two years).
Correct, guys tended to start slower back then....even Orr wasn't a star right away. The other item for Coffey is that he scored a ton of goals, so less percentage of his points were assists. Yes, he played in the 80's, but I don't see Hughes putting up 48 goals any time soon.

He's also -8 and has terrible advanced stats. I think he'd win but I don't think it would be unanimous.
Ehhhh, I do not think that's true.

Makar has a 56.51xGF%, he's doing just fine. Not as high as Hughes (68.09%) but that's still extremely good. He's basically tied in that with Heiskanen and I don't think anyone would say he's doing poorly.

The avs just don't have a goaltender that can make saves.

Check the stats when MacKinnon isn't on the ice... his 5v5 xGF% is 37.36 away from MacKinnon.

5v5 even with MacKinnon his CorsiRel and FenwickRel are -2.1 and -2.5, Hughes is +19.8 and +20.1

I've never seen a player control a game like Q Hughes does. There is 0 doubt in my mind that he is the best Dman in the planet and just below Mcdavid for Best Player in the Planet.

I think Makar's offence is slightly better than Quinn's but everything else from Defence, possession etc and Makar is not on same level.

Offence:
Makar 9.5/10
Q Hughes 9/10

Defence
Makar 7.0/10
Q Hughes 9.0/10

The thing about Quinn is he actively listens to what is perceived to be the negative part of his game and then it fuels him to improve on it in the off-season. First it was his defense, then it was his fluffy shot, ...both of which he has improved at a jaw dropping level.

Its insane to think that he just turned 25 yrs old and continues to improve which begs the question...how high is his ceiling?

We are really seeing a Golden Age of Dmen from Hughes, Makar, Fox, Josi, Morrisey etc...

It’s weird because that was one of Makar’s strong suits his first few years. I think the Avs forward depth with their losses/injuries since 2022 is a big part of it though.

I think it’s more indicative of how the avs depth has been decimated than it is on Makar’s skill

Yea because his team is a trainwreck and so is his goalie. You need to think a little before you flap. Makar > Hughes AINEC

His MacKinnonless stats have been bad for two years now!

Last year, his CF% was 46.19, his FF% was 46.48, his xGF% was 47.74.

His stats have been getting worse every year since 2022. Even if his stats are worse this year because his team is worse, they were still bad the year before. Hughes is the play driver on the Canucks, Makar is along for the ride.

Hughes, at 5v5 when Miller and Pettersson are BOTH off the ice this year has a CF% of 64.94, a FF% of 61.21%, and a xGF% of 69.90. Just with the Canucks 3rd and 4th lines, with Silovs who can't stop a beach ball and Lankinen, a goalie who has played well but only became a Canuck in training camp.
