You guys look at age but forget who coffey was playing with. If you want to nit pick how Hughes is 2 years older when he beat coffey then also consider how coffey had Gretzky and Messier playing in the 80s. I think Hughes record is more impressive. He is carrying thr damn team playing 30 minutes every night.

It’s not really nit picking. There’s a huge difference between 23 and 25 when talking about the development of a defenseman.

The comment wasn’t meant to be dismissive of the record, but it’s appropriate to put the record in perspective. Guys entering the league at 20 are obviously going to have a leg up on 18 year olds when tracking “fewest games to x” type records.

Just an insane once in a life time level of talent. The Canucks d-core is going to be filthy in a year or two.

Hughes - Willander
Pettersson - Hronek
I'll give you Willander but Pettersson is definitely tracking to be bottom pair. Soucy will easily be our #4 for the next couple once he breaks his early season slump and finds last years form.

Coffey had Gretzky, Messier, Andersson etc. While Hughes has who? Skinny Pete? Put Hughes on that Oilers dynasty team and i bet he would have the fastest assist to 300.

I get your point, but I’m just reporting the facts.

He assisted on 11 total goals by Gretzky, Messier, and Anderson through his first 79 games as a 19 year old. If Hughes is in the same role, I doubt he’s doing much more.

Fair enough in year two. 24 of his 60 assists were on Gretzky goals. But Hagman and Lumley were next on the list with 6 apiece.

We have to get all the way into his fourth year before the numbers spike with Gretzky, Kurri, and the gang.

Yep. And Coffey was a huge cog in that team, and inflated their numbers the same way they inflated his.

maybe 5th, but yeah he's looking like he took another step this year
Every game you watch him he is just obviously the best player on the ice.

63.1% Corsi to lead the league among Defensman that would qualify.

He might be better than Leon.

Not sure if you are trolling but we have 2 Elias Petterssons and one of the plays defense.

When we drafted Elias Pettersson in 2022 I was wondering wtf was happening.
Raist is one of the more sophisticated posters coming from Canucks boards. He knows and he is referring to the defender Elias Pettersson

Those are some unreal names that Hughes has joined and surpassed. What an incredible talent that Canucks fans "including myself" have had the honor to enjoy game in and game out. Hughes is the nucleus of the whole team, looking forward to seeing him get better and better. A true professional who strives to be the best that he can be. Hughes went from a player who rarely shot the puck, and when he did there was no heat behind it, to a player that has a 92+ mph slapshot.

Amazing player, what a accomplishment.

Great to see.
So many super offensive players in this current NHL, makes it super fun to watch.

Also don't even hate the kid, he's like perpetually sad and I just feel bad!

Q. Hughes

4th best player in the league
I agree, he is the 4th best player in the league. How can anyone argue against that since he is the 3rd best dman in NHL history only behind Orr and Leetch when it comes to getting assists. He already has 12 points with Canucks playing like crap.

Makar has 23 points already. If the Norris was handed out now, it would be unanimous.
Makar is already injured so there goes that.

When I saw Hughes live at Rogers arena, I couldnt believe his speed and how shifty he is. He is probably one of the smoothest skaters in the NHL. His edge work is amazing and he can turn on a dime

In a vacuum of which player to take in a draft, I would pick Hughes over Leon because he has a much bigger impact and can play 30 minutes defending and scoring. I think a top end Norris winning dman is harder to find then a number 1 center.

Makar will most likely beat him in race to 300 assists in fewest games possible.
