Are counting the played but still rookie eligible the following year season? If you don't, it's close. If you are counting it as one of the five, Leetch no contest. It seems like you might not be counting it. Last season was technically, Quinn's 6th.

Hard for me to separate Leetch the player from just his first 5 seasons as I didn’t see much of that. I believe Leetch was the better player in general but part of that is the ‘94 playoffs that wouldn’t be included in this run.

this one’s tough for me, as Leetch is my favourite defender of all time.

I’ll say Leetch but it Quinn Hughes repeats with 90+ points while being a stud defensively .. I might be ready to pick Hughes

But until he proves it again, I’ll go with Leetch

Good poll

Leetch was better. There hasn't been a defense man in the NHL who has put up an as dominant Conn Smythe run as Leetch did in 1994. People on this forum also like to act as if Leetch was awful defensively, because he had great offensive numbers, and the narrative just doesn't hold up if you actually saw him play.

I think its close though. Hughes is great and is starting to carve out a fantastic career.

The OP picked the first 5 seasons to avoid the 1994 Cup run.

Leetch ainec

Leetch playing in today's league with today's rules (soft as hell) and style (let the defense activate) and sticks (biggest knock on Leetch was that his finish wasn't up to par with the rest of his game) would have everyone calling him the "best D since Orr" instead of Makar

It’s funny how many old timers would apparently be the best player in the league if they played today

yep the improvements in the equipment and the wussification of the league both serve to artificially inflate the skill level today

there were good finesse players back then too it's just it wasn't all there was too hockey

Chose “Leetch and it’s not even close” because it isn’t at this point in time. I expect Hughes to narrow the gap as his career goes on, but I doubt he can actually overtake him.

To be honest I prefer the philosophy in today's game. I hated the fact that skill was openly mocked during the DPE. I remember Rangers fans mocking a pretty good line we had calling them "finesse". Today even people that aren't meatheads value tough good players. But those people value tough and GOOD players. There are still so many people that think that all you need is toughness, even today. If guys hit and block shots they're automatically good, even if they lose positioning and can't get out of their zone. BUT if you have those guys in 2024 imagine how many of those you had in 2004? The philosophy of the game has changed where people value different things and don't just say "hey this guy doesn't hit as much as this guy he is automatically worse". Yes, it's gotten softer but a lot of the "grit" was guys waterskiing players and slowing the game down to a crawl. What exactly is the positive in that?

In Leetch's 1991-92 season, he won the Norris trophy, finished 9th in points.

Norris record first 5 seasons: 1, 4, 10, 11

Hughes last season won the Norris and finished 15th in points.

Norris record first 5 seasons: 1, 9, 13, 14.

It's close but for now Leetch has the edge. He has the best season between them and a slightly better Norris record using OP's timeframe.
