Quinn Hughes is having a Hart caliber season

Makar has the highest o-zone starts in the whole league. Werenski is also higher than Hughes.
But Hughes is 8.4% Dzone starts (173rd out of 192 total Dmen) compared to 15.7% for Makar and 12.7% for Werenski…wouldn’t that stat be more telling? I tend to ignore advanced stats though.

What about the guy that plays against the easiest competition and is defensively sheltered the most of the tree? And also plays zero PK time.

Can't wait to see how he spins this one.
What is there to spin? I don’t think this is the burn you think it is. I’m guessing the stats might show that COL has more Ozone draws than Dzone vs Vancouver? No idea really. But if you look at the stats, Makar is first on his team in Ozone starts but he’s basically tied on his team for Dzone starts, but #2 at 15.7%, 1st on team is 15.8%. Hughes is 1st on his team in Ozone starts and dead last in Dzone starts by a mile at 8.4%, 2nd last is at 14.1%

There's no way people are claiming that Makar playing on the PK is somehow an advantage for him over Hughes.

Looks like he needs to follow Quinn's lead and leave the PKing to other players.

It's not just that Quinn doesn't PK. It's that while playing Edmonton Friday Cale Makar was on the ice nearly the entire time that McDavid was and held him to 0 points. While putting up 3 himself. And who would Quinn be on the ice covering in the same situations? RNH/Janmark/Brown. They leave McDavid and Drai up to Pettersson and Myers.

I don't put any stock into zone starts. I just find it funny watching av fans trip over themselves reversing their opinions every other week. Prime example was shitting on Kuch for empty net points . Now that they are empty net point merchants they apparently don't care. You must PK to win Norris!! Makar is 6% on PK stat. lol.

Again using the J-Fresh analytics. Canucks fans must make up like 90% of that dudes patreon donators.

The Avs two “A”s are so much better than what Vancougar has as leaders, Kind of easy to see Van’s plight. Hughes is a good player. But there is no way in hell this scenario happens like this under MacKinnon’s watch. And weirdly (not so weirdly- Skog is an amazing captain) MacKinnon defers to Landeskog. There are levels to this.

I said sheltered. Obviously all #1 dmen start in the O zone more than others. Hughes is the only one who doesnt PK (which is 99.9% d zone starts), doesnt get d zone starts unless Miller or Petey were his centers, and only plays with the 3rd-4th lines if they are o zone starts. That is sheltered.

Of the top 50 dmen in TOI who have played 40+ games, Shea Theodore is the only other dmen who has PK'd less than Quinn and he is one of five in the TOP 50 who are pathetically low in PK time. THE TOP 50!!!! This isnt some random list I picked to make Makar or Werenski look good.

He is an offensive hybrid player at best similar to Evan Bouchard. Dude can score, but saying he is a good "Defense"man at this point is laughable. Just like Bouchard had the greatest playoff of any dman since Coffey or Leetch last season...

one of your team best players hired a russian hooker from the russian mob and refused to pay up during the playoffs.

Could be going for a 4 peat dynasty at this point is it werent for that...

D-zone start don't mean much because after icing, you are forced to be on the ice anyways. If it was up to the coach, Quinn would have a 0% D-zone start without the no-change icing rule and once they get out of the zone, easier to change the D after the breakout. You don't want your best D getting hemmed in if they lose the face-off. Just get faceoff win and Quinn be on the ice right after they dump the puck in. Having the energy is more important when you are averaging 25+ minutes per game with skill you have on ability to control the game. What ultimately matter is how you defend when you are in the D-zone and Quinn still have the ability to steal the puck and get the puck out of the zone quickly better than anyone I ever seen in the league with his stature.

I admit that I have not watched Hughes or Makar as much as I have Werenski, but I have never been as impressed by a dman as much as I have been with Zach this year. He is everywhere all the time.

Werenski absolutely belongs in this discussion and anyone who doesn't think so hasn't watched him this season. He's been incredible.

So let me get this straight

Hughes is playing with the 4th line consistently in the offensive zone but was leading the league on defensive scoring

Brilliant logic
Got that big Brain working overtime
That just further proves his case

LOLOLOLOLOL

What are you talking about? You don’t want your best D to start in the Dzone because they might get hemmed in and will use up their energy…need to conserve that. At the same time you suggest Hughes is really good in his own end and can steal the puck quickly and get it out quickly. If that’s the case, wouldn’t you want him out there, why would they get hemmed in?

The PK thing isn't all that important to me; if Vancouver has other guys who can effectively do it so Hughes isn't playing 30 mins a game, so be it. Canucks PK is 10th in the league so they aren't doing bad without him. However if he wants to win any trophies this season, he's gotta stop getting injured. If he's playing so much it's putting extra strain on him then getting injured is almost inevitable. Doesn't matter how good you are; if you're on the sidelines you aren't winning Hart/Norris.
