Quinn Hughes is having a Hart caliber season

Hughes is in that upper elite tier with only a handful of other players that you can count on one hand. Makar is right there with him.

I'd have it McDavid, Makar, MacKinnon, Draisaitl, Hughes in no particular order.

I'd add Hellebyuck in that list of excellence...

but Rantennen went...and Van is in a corner...they are collapsing the locker room is toxic, and Hughes reportedly wants out....

so they might HAVE to trade him...and it would be full rebuild for the Nucks...so futures and prospects would be "worth more" than players....

In all seriousness, obv well go back and forth on best dman in the league with Makar so lets skip that, but how do you quantify top 5 skater? id argue Girard and Skinner are better skaters than him. One spins all over the place and the other was a figure skater growing up.

His offensive ability, pp captaining, breakout ability, and puck control is what will bring in the haul. No GM is like "lets trade for him for his top 5 skating ability."

Ignoring the fact those are laughable examples from a pure skating perspective, (particularly Skinner), by skater he means non-goalie

Yeah, so ridiculous that the top defenseman in the league for possibly two years in a row may be one of the top 5 players. Let's just automatically slot makar in above him for....reasons.

"Skaters" meaning non goalies is pretty common terminology.

The only non-goalies I consistently take over Hughes every day of the week is McDavid, Kucherov, and MacKinnon. Draisaitl probably too, in a vacuum, but the Canucks likely need Hughes more.

Yeah I'd not take Draisaitl over Hughes, especially given how sorry the Canucks defense is without him. He also plays a lot of minutes, something a forward just cant do and controls the game with it. Canucks obviously could use a center that actually produces at an elite level right now but without Hughes its over, hes the entire team.

Another issue is... the Oilers are probably a better team with McD + Hughes than they are with McD + Draisaitl though and I wouldnt want to help them win a cup so I would veto that trade for that reason too. Bouchard had a good year last season but theres a real difference between Hughes and the tier of player Bouchard is in. Its like saying Pettersson having a strong start to last season meant that at that moment he was on Draisaitl or McDavid's level. Thats absurd. Hughes with McDavid would skate circles around teams and feed eachother in a way that just wouldnt be fair. It'd be a better version than Mackinnon and Makar since both are top of the league possession guys. On that note... Makar with Mackinnon, Crosby, and McDavid on the powerplay at the 4 nations will be so unfair...

You mentioned Sean Monahan but the Blue Jackets have 2 forwards going at a point per game, one is within a couple points of Werenski. If the argument is that Werenski has less help then that absolutely helps him against Makar (and why I'd have him ahead of Makar for the Hart and Norris). The Canucks have zero forwards at a point per game. Better players sure but they arent playing like it. Right now in Norris its Hughes > Werenski > Makar and for Hart (among defensemen) its really only Hughes > Werenski since there is zero argument for Makar being the most important player for his team when Mackinnon is there.

Werenski is kind of where Hughes was a couple years ago where he had emerged as a truly elite player but wasnt getting the attention because people just looked at career stats and had their own biases about him (for Hughes it was he couldnt play defense) and they just defaulted to Makar and Fox are strictly better. Hughes went into last year ranked outside the top 20 by several sports news agencies... ESPN had him below Seth Jones on their D rankings. Thats the kind of disrespect Werenski gets right now plus because hes in Columbus he also gets the indignity of being completely ignored. Guys like Morrissey being in a Canadian market on a top team get more shine than Werenski does. So I get your frustration here. Werenski deserves consideration for the Hart and should be a runner up for the Norris if the rest of the season plays out as it has so far. Just be glad that you get to watch him play, even if fans of other teams and the media dont care to affirm how good he is.

Weird to quote this when Monahan has been out for going on what two weeks and the jackets are still winning games and Werenskis streak has continued. If it was flipped the CBJ D would fall apart and the rest of the team along with it.

This does nothing to change the point I made. In fact it strengthens the point since Monahan remains significantly far ahead of any Canuck forward in points even with the 3 weeks out AND Marchenko is basically producing the same amount as Werenski is. There isnt anyone on the Canucks near Hughes, so the "who has more help" argument actually helps Hughes. Werenski absolutely should be ahead of Makar though in any Norris or Hart discussion for the reasons I gave.

Him having a historic season for Columbus history is notable and he deserves a ton of credit (far more than he gets) but he would need to have better numbers to be ahead of Hughes for the Hart or Norris. There is still a lot of season left for Hughes to fall off or Werenski to heat up and build a lead, in which case he'd be ahead in the Norris at least. If Werenski has more points and closes the gap on some of the advanced stats that matter, then he'd be ahead. He isnt the topic of this thread though so if you want a bigger discussion about it then maybe start a Werenski for Hart thread.

Hard to see Hughes slowing down unless he gets hurt though. He's scored or assisted 7 of the last 10 Canuck goals. 6 points in his last 2.5 games. 10 points in his last 5.5 games.

Makar is not on there if Quinn isn't lol. Statistically Hughes is better by eye.. Quinn is better. Don't worry you'll see once he wins the Norris back to back

Hate to break it to you but Quinns been the best Dman for two years now. This season the gap had widened considering what Quinns doing basically on his own like one only needs to see the numbers with him on the ice vs when he's not it's so far apart on both sides of the ice it's laughable.

Makar has way more to work with and when you consider after 20ish games makar had a 18 point lead and is now behind with 7 more games with Quinns defensive numbers far better, it's not even close.
