Quinn Hughes interview - Talks about his future in Vancouver Longterm as well as his respect for Tochett

He's gonna look good in a Leaf sweater, he was dying to play with Big Papi El Americano Capitano and now he can fullfill his boyhood dream. Can't wait. #GoLeafsGo #QuinnBleedsANewBlue

Don’t give up, dude. They’re close to coming around
lol youre right.

Boeser shooting % is 18% this year. Was 19.6% last year. Dude is a sniper and needs competant linemates around him. Is he going to drive a line, no, but he would EASILY have 50 goals on a decent team.

Cant afford him. Leaves are saving $20M for McJesus's homecoming.

Im rooting for it. Edmonton fans will implode here.
It's good for both teams and cities tbh, they probably have a heard time cheering on #Canada'sTeam, but after Quinn and McDavid join us, they'll come around :)

I also believe New Jersey would be the last place he ends up in the future.

2 reasons.

1. He would not want to over-shadow Luke Hughes. Luke would be relegated and stunted with his role on the team as Quinn would take over everything especially PP1. Why would Q want to do that to Luke's career and minimize not only his Luke's career but his earning capacity.

2. Quinn is a very very very loyal guy. If he does tell Vancouver he would like to move on, the Canucks will trade him for the biggest return in NHL history. Quinn will feel loyal to that trading team and sign there long term. Guranteed.
Actually what happened is when Quinn was a teen little Lukey went crying to mom that he wasn't sharing his Xbox, so Quinn had sit there and let Luke play Minecraft while all his friends were online playing Halo 4 without him. The resentment just never went away!

Seriously though, 'brothers playing on the same team' seem more of a wish fulfillment thing for fans for the novelty of it (not just New Jersey) than something that actually happens. It can, but usually not. Now there's going to be a lot of people who grew up as single children, but while you grow up together when you hit adult hood generally you pack up move out and start living your own lives likely in different towns/cities. While especially if you have good relations a family get together every year or so is nice, there's no real longing to be living in the same city, never mind taking it a step further and working together.

As I've been saying for a while, what it should come down to is if Vancouver can rebound over the next two seasons, Quinn like he says most likely stays. If it's a step back and/or continued repeat of this current season, then chances are he'll want to sign somewhere more competitive. Now if it comes to that New Jersey having his two brothers creates a massive advantage for them to land him. But he otherwise would have no attachment to New Jersey, while Vancouver is the city he's so far spent his adult life in and as captain the Canucks are his team. That's a bigger draw than just 'my brothers play over there'.

This is the part you are wrong. As far as I'm aware all 3 brothers live together. I'm pretty sure they bought a place by a lake if memory serves me correct & during the off season they hang out 24/7.

So when Marner doesnt sign in Vancouver, they lose Boeser for nothing, and they do not improve overall in the next 2 years because of middling draft positions, Quinn is going to say, "They made me Captain, I guess ill commit to another 8 years here. Sign me up."

Right....
Dumb take. Vancouver has an underated pool but they are also a prime destination for UFA's.

Granted I have no clue who gets added but either do you so to take all the worst case scenarios like you are doing is a dumb and bias way of looking at things.
Look at the oilers who have nothing in the pipe, are the oldest team in hockey and not a prime destination, yet Drai re-signed and #97 will as well.
Two years from now the oilers are likely in a steady decline, while the nucks one of the younger teams are likely still in their window, based on the points I made

"Prime destination"?!?!?!

I cant think of a big named FA that has signed there ever. Does Markus Naslund count? Mark Messier lol? Alexander Mogilny?

vancouver fans have got to be the most insecure in the whole league. who is this thread for? where is the thread about how hughes is leaving because he rents a 700 sqft 2br condo in a middling neighborhood despite career earnings over 30m and six plus seasons in vancouver?

i don't think hughes is counting the days until he can get out of vancouver but this is just pr from a player who has clearly had media training and did a puff piece with the most team friendly member of the local media. it doesn't mean anything

You might be right, but Miller and Boeser are two high end players than left/are leaving. It is curious why they dont attract more UFA's because I agree on the city.

Recent captains to be traded or left
Tavares
ROR
OEL
Eichel
Giordano
Giroux
Stamkos
Horvat
Okposo
Trouba
Marchand

Im with you that captains dont move, but the team is trending in the wrong direction, but, but I guess $12+ could keep him there.
Only three of those guys were in their prime and only two of them actually wanted to go

I disagree. Some families are not that close, but the Hughes bros seem extremely close. They always hang out together when they can, like during 4nations and whenever their teams play each other. This isn't just some joe schmo bros, these are potentially the most talented group of hockey brothers we've ever seen. New Jersey has already drafted 2 of them so the hard part is done. All that's left is for Quinn to decide that it sounds pretty darn cool to play with his brothers in a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I'm not saying I can read his mind, maybe he's a lone wolf who wants to set his own legacy; but the prospect of playing with his brothers who've been practising together forever must be incredibly tempting. Time will tell what he decides to do.

Naslund and mogilny were trades. Messier was a big deal even if he was 36. Sundin was a big fish despite the advanced stage.

I'd have to think about their ufa history but in the context of Canadian cities, I don't think they are seen as an undesirable destination whatsoever.

Vancouver is absoloutely a prime destination. Especially if the Canadian media/culture is something a player can handle.

Prime destination doesnt just translate to UFA signings...... Prime destination is also relevant with the following

1. How many trades can you make because players dont have your team on No Trade Clauses
2. Can you keep your wanted internal players or are they trotting merrily to free agency.

Trade Wise, Vancouver has been one of the most active for many years.

- Trading in and trading out JT Miller, signing JT Miller to long term contract in his prime
- Trading for Hronek and extending
- Trading for Marcus Pettersson then immediate extension
-Trading for Connor Garland

Trades that may have not worked out but nevertheless high profile players with no trade clauses came to Van.. Re: Oliver Ekman Larsen

OEL was captain of the Zona team and was highly coveted but apparently was only willing to waive for 2 places...Van or Boston.

Now for some internal re- signings:

As i mentioned, Canucks dont lose players in their prime unless they are the ones initiating the trade or are reluctant to re-sign them to a new contract. However, for the most part, the players dont leave:

Sedins, Kesler, Luongo, Edler, Demko, Horvat, Boeser, Jt Miller, Elias Pettersson.

UFAs:

If you recall the Andrei Kuzmenko sweepstakes, more than half the league wanted AK out of Russia. The sweepstakes came down to a couple of teams. Van and Edmtonton. Edmonton took him to a Joeys restaurant to wine and dine him and he signed with Vancouver a few days later.

As much of a joke was his time in Vancouver, Loui Eriksson was one of the highly coveted players in his Free Agent class. He just came off a 30 goals 60+ point season with Boston while garnering Selke talks. Canucks signed him as a free agent.

Mats Sundin, Radim Vrbata, Dan Hamhuis, Manny Malhotra....etc.

Most "desirable" cities dont really have big name UFAs. Florida? Tampa I guess with Guentzel, but no one else really. Other top destination city would be Dallas...who is their big UFAs?

However, these teams are prime destinations because they arent hindered with no trade clauses and players refusing to be traded to their city/team.

Compare that to a city/team like Edmonton though.

How many 1st round picks has the Oilers been forced to use during the McDrai era because they are handcuffed with trade opportunities. They are aways bargain bin shopping for wingers or giving 3rd chance projects a chance like Skinner, Kane, Perry,Kassian etc...

You get the jist on how to judge a Prime Destination or not for NHLers. Should be something like this in order

1. Quality of Life for Player and Family
2. How Beautiful the city is, schools for their kids etc.
3. How Competitive the Team can be
4. $$$$$$$$

Some players might reverse prioritize #3 and 4 but for the most part, #1 and 2 are non negotiable in that order.

I feel like this was a really long post to tell us about a few trades, virtually no high profile UFA signings, all around the fact that they seemingly arent Buffalo being on every players no trade list? Were talknig a 50 year period of few if any high profile UFA signings. That is not a prime destination. Almost every other team can spout off a longer list and some big names they signed. I dont doubt that once players are there, they learn to love it, but if you cant get them there outside of drafting them, then yeah.

For every positive you listed, a mirror negative or obtuse negative can be created.

1. QOL...in Canada
2. Beautiful city...cold af in the winter
3. Competitive...it isnt right now
4. $$$$...same in every NHL city

No real argument here. Outside of TOR, all of Canada is in the bottom 10 of destination cities for political, economic, media, and/or weather related reasons. Toss in Buffalo, Columbus, and some other meh cities and you have your bottom 10.

Guess you didnt comprehend the point that "destination cities" shouldnt be gauged on big UFA signings because most successful teams dont build through the UFA. Destination cities should be judged based on how many trades a city/team can make because they arent handcuffed by NTC and players refusing to get traded to them.

IMO, the top destination places are places like Florida, Tampa, Dallas..... who is their big name Free Agents signings?? besides Guentzel. Vegas has climbed the list lately, who is their big UFA signing? No one major i can think of, however, all those teams have ZERO problem trading for players because they arent on much NTC.

Bad take
Anyone can see that Quinn is taking his role as Captain at heart.
In spite of his obvious injury he turned it up the last few games in the ridiculous quest to make the playoffs in spite of the odds. Because that's what the team has demanded of him and went full Quinn.
To him, the C means something to him and this is his team. His response to the media is someone internalizing the responsibility expected of him.
You'd need one or two more seasons of futility to shake him. In this era, Sutter and Smyl loyalty to the end is rare if non-existant - because if Bourque would leave, anyone can and will.
