With the Canucks stuck in no mans land the likelihood of Hughes going somewhere else is very real. What are some trade packages that would be acceptable in return for a generational talent like Quinn Hughes.

They have to wait until the end of next year and then trade for the next great talent. They can't replace him but they have to give themselves and fans the best chance to
The 2026 1rst overall, McKenna plus a couple more picks/prospects and players combined. McKenna might be the biggest equivalent to Hughes over his career in team value and performance.
That avoids any "tanking" although a bad year would enhance picks in that deep draft, doing the above the Canucks retain their own 2026 1rst to add to the new, rebuilt core of star potential forwards/players.
Any trades now are just teams moving on from players they don't think are good enough to make a big enough difference for their teams, they don't have to make trades to make cap space thanks to the cap increases of the next 3 years.

The reality is that there is no package that will make people feel good about trading Hughes...he might be the best player this team has ever had...but the reality is also that he might not have any intention to re-sign in Vancouver and the team will need to trade him...if he has had conversations with the team about his future, and if he wants to stay or go...now would be the time to make that decision. If you're going to rebuild now would be the time to do it. You still have a window of opportunity to trade EP, you can maximize QH's value by retaining salary and giving a team an incredible bargain, you can minimize the cap impact of OEL's dead cap...I'm not saying this is the ideal path forward, re-signing Hughes long term would be, but if thats not in the cards...time to blow it up.
There is probably no realistic deal that is worthwhile trading Hughes for. The amount VAN would want back is astronomical and it's unlikely another team would be willing to pay - especially when everyone knows if he doesn't re-sign, he's heading to NJ to join his brothers.

It would be criminal to put the building of the team on his shoulders when it is this bad. If fans thought that and it wasn't very good the backlash would be way worse than being angry at the GMs. And then why have the GMs at all?
Even if he has no intention of re-signing here he will never say it, players just don't do that unless they have no choice and even if he did this idiot is likely to do the Calgary thing and end up with nothing saying, "we thought, we hoped, we were sure, if you knew the offers you would be embarrassed" threw in the last Allvin thing, it was pretty unique and all Allvin's.
If they did my OCD idea and it worked, then the first 90 pt seasons from Misa and McKenna would erase any negative feelings. The first playoff series when they are still under 21yrs old would have fans cheer just watching the very young players "grow" and improve. A change from finding bandaids to put on bandaids. Then when they have 6 or 7 young star or solid level players then the instant gratification deals can be made.
With this idea EP40 doesn't need to be traded, the added cap space just makes him a very overly high paid defensive player but they will need to spend the money somewhere and he might just become a mentor and give him highly skilled players on his line.
IMO there are no possible trade assets the equal of those two over the next two years, those two are the best chance their games translate into the NHL.
But they won't be alone, there will be the other 2026 picks because the Canucks will still have their own and it is a deep draft.
This could be better than the Tampa dip or the Pittsburgh dip or the Chicago dip or even the LA dip al teams that took a dip for a year or two and did rebuild in that time by getting the top players available in those drafts. Even the Canucks did that for the Sedins and Linden, not total rebuilds just getting the top draft picks for those drafts. The map for that is already out there, a successful plan.
And now que the marketing posters, BUT but but Buffalo! The ONLY example of a failed rebuild but HEY, they have the same number of regulation wins as the Canucks.

Some of Vancouvers best players ever have been traded away at some point. Bigfoot has yet to appear in anyones backyard. There was that one time we thought we saw him but that was just Ferraros uncle Bruno with his shirt off at the BBQ

There is no realistic trade package because players like Quinn Hughes don't get traded.
I'm sure that a lot of Canuck fans at one time said the same thing about Horvat and Miller--particularly when the latter signed that eight-year contract. And before that, Bure, Linden and Naslund.
But the decision on whether Hughes stays or goes--won't be made by the Canuck front office. It'll be Hughes' decision, as it should be.
He's already proven almost everything there is to prove as a player--one of the best d-men ever to put on on an NHL jersey. At this point in his career, it's all about winning and a Stanley Cup.
And after this dismal season, if the Canucks don't get a lot better and in a big hurry, he's as good as gone at the end of 2026-27 season. That's just the way it is.
Obviously the Canucks would never be in a position to just let Hughes walk. It would cripple the franchise for a decade. So speculation on what the Canucks could reasonably expect back--is not being 'hyperbolic' or 'disloyal' in any way.
It's just the 'business' of the NHL.

The only way he’s traded is if in 2026 he makes it clear that he has no intent of re-signing past 2027.
Yeah, I don't think QH's next contract is as much about money and term as it is about legacy. Don't be fooled by his quiet demeanor... I think he wants to prove he is great enough to be THE reason his team wins the Cup.
