And the Soviets didn't?

Please, spare me that Soviets were angels stuff.

We are all sick of it.

My non hockey watching Ukrainian girlfriend watched a Canadian documentary on the summit series and came away disgusted with how they portrayed the Canadian team.

How did they portray them?

You are calling it what YOU think it is, not what it really is.

Hockeys a rough sport, you should know this as well as anybody. The series was rough on both sides.

It seems you are the one rewriting history here for whatever ulterior motive you may have.

Canada didn't try to play hockey, I don't know what to say about stuff like that.

I just showed two of the most beautiful goals in the whole series but you say all we did was goon it up?

Cmon man, what is with the skewed bias? Especially from a Canadian, or at least you claim you are.

I'm not so sure.

And I just showed you two of the most vicious attacks you’ll ever see, which really should never been tolerated. Bobby Clarke (who I think is a disgrace, in so many ways), should have been booted from the series. Instead, the Soviets lose their best player for one game, and he comes back ineffectual for the last game.

I’m not the first to say these things. Some of the broadcasters of the game said the same thing, but were basically drowned out and ignored.

I’m happy they won and all, but I don’t think that’s a highpoint at all, because of the way they did it. I think some of their tactics, and dirty play, were disgusting.

If you want something that I’d look at as a high point, look at the 1987 Canada Cup. Some amazing hockey, highlighted by probably the two best forwards to ever play the game (arguably two best players ever), culminating in those two clinching the win with the Gretzky to Lemieux drop pass goal. That’s the stuff you should be proud of. They beat the Russians (and rest of the world) because they played a better game. They didn’t have to resort to any dirty tactics, they just played a better game, and won.

we won in 87 because we played better hockey?

Not according to the Russians.

I don’t really care what the Russians have to say, and I don't really care about what you, or any other Canadian hockey fan have to say, when they're enamoured with a bunch of goons winning a tournament. I’m a grown up! I can make up my own mind! I don’t need people to tell me the Canadians were unreal in the 87 Canada Cup, and I don’t need people to tell me that chopping a guys ankle off, and butt ending a guy in the face (granted, not a part of the Summit Series itself), isn’t the kind of thing I should be proud of.

If you’re proud of that kind of crap, and you think we should start putting guys like Matt Cooke on Team Canada, all the power to you. I choose not to be proud of crap like that.

I'm a grown up too and can make up my own mind also.

It's not a right accorded only to you and people who agree with you.

And I am damn proud of how Canada played in the 1972 Summit series, we overcame a lot of crap, some of it illegal also ,to win that series.

Me and millions of other Canadians don't care what the tiny minority of fans like you think. You have your opinion and we disagree with it.

Let's leave it at that.

I never said you weren’t allowed to think what you will. Go ahead.

I’m just never going to be too happy about winning a series because we sent an idiot like Bobby Clarke out to take their best player out of the series.

You can be proud all you like, that’s your prerogative.

Why is it so bad, buddy?

3 things..

I am not a big fan of Russian cinema anyway... I watch Russian movies for language practice. I have a few favorites, but very few.

I am not a fan of the sport film genre. Other than Slapshot and Major League, I dislike sport movies.

While the film had some historical inaccuracies, the gross portrayal of the of the Canadian team made it not worth watching...and despite what are friend Tolev says, you don't win a series (final 3 games) in Moscow with rigged officiating by goon tactics alone. The Canadian team beat them on skill (Paul Henderson and the goals he scored). The Clarke incident was, of course, not our finest moment and not something to be proud of...

72 was before my time anyway..

How were we portrayed?

Is there one with subtitles? I didn't think either of us found one with subs.

Like Gorillas... just like they always refer to us. the film was meant to inspire the Sochi Olympic team to gold. So, karma will always get you in the end.
The CBC did a much better and unbiased film of the 72 series.

Rigged officiating? I don’t know about that. That’s a pretty common claim among Canadians every time there is an international tournament. In part, I think that’s because we do play a tougher game, and things that wouldn’t get penalized in North America, DO in the international game. That doesn’t make it rigged.

Did they win on goon tactics ALONE? No. But it definitely tilted the end result, from what I suspect would have been a loss (two one goal wins where the USSR didn’t have their top player, as a direct result of an intentional injury, where the guy doing so was still allowed to play), to a win.

Yes, there were some great players on that team. It’s a shame they couldn’t let those guys be the focal point, instead of idiots and cheap shot artists like Clarke and Esposito.

Why are you acting like they didn't deserve to be there? Clarke had 8seasons of 80+ points espo had multiple 100+ points seasons clearly they deserved to be there

Didn't one of the Russians kick a Canadian player with their skate going right through the shin pad and cutting him open? That's about as bad as the slash. There's no kicking in hockey. This isn't soccer but no one told the Russians that.

They did tons of stuff, all the players have said how dirty the Soviets were.

I just don't see the big deal.

They pretty much glorified the gratuitous violence of team Canada as part of their fighting spirit.

Personally I wouldn't have been proud of team USA if that's how they won the gold medal in 1980.

In the end, it really doesn't matter what they think...as they have their story line which they will run with regardless. After the 2010 Vancouver game, after that display of speed, skill, power and finesse, what was the main Russian headline, "The gorillas were let out of their cage; send them to doping control." I always get a good chuckle at the aggrieved Russian complaining about bias and stereotypes...when they, from what I saw from the 7 years I lived there, are some of the worst offenders when it comes to bias and perpetrating stereotypes.

I'm finished.

It's all silly to me.

Both sides did underhanded things in that series, it was the times they were in and the magnitude of that series in hockeys history. It all just made for more drama and it was wild and great. Best hockey series ever hands down it and has a good argument as best sporting event ever. It was like the Gone with The Wind of sports. That series had absolutely EVERYTHING.

Why shouldn't Canadians be proud of that series? In the end they wanted it more, that is why they won and the Soviet players to a man have acknowledged that.

Yeah, they were pretty good players. So why did they have to resort to crap like that?

I guess I just don’t see the honour in winning by using tactics like that.

I don’t see the 72 Summit Series as showing the Canadians were better hockey players. Quite the opposite. It looked to me like they were going to lose until they decided to prove they were better thugs.

Nothing would have made me prouder if they had won that series by skating circles around the Russians. But that isn’t what happened.

Fixed that for you.

And for gods sake, Esposito was the best player in the damn series and you make him out to be Steve freakin Durbano here. The Soviet players themselves said he was the most difficult Canadian player to contain.

Even your user name, Torlev, it's so Russian.

Somethings off with you, second generation Russian Canadian?

No, it happens outside of the Russians too.

I’m not Russian. Canadian many generations back on my mother’s side, Estonian on my father’s (however, several generations back).

Which, by the way, given the Soviet occupation of those years, those Baltic states don’t take too kindly to Russians, for the most part. They hate them.

If others think we needed to goon it up to win in 72, so be it. I won't lose any sleep over it. Our struggles to beat Russia were the best thing that ever happened to Canadian hockey.

Others? I’m included in “Weâ€, if you’re referring to me.

And yes, it was an eye-opener. And shortly thereafter, a new era was brought in, with some of the best Canadian players (or any/all players, not just Canadian) the game has ever seen.

In my opinion, the 80s saw some of the best, most entertaining international hockey in history. I wish they could bring back the Canada Cup. Or World Cup of Hockey, whatever.

What who thinks? It was a Canadian film on the 72 series and a Ukrainian watching it. Completely anecdotal and proves nothing but it's about as far away from a pro Russian viewpoint as it gets.
