I somehow never considered this issue...but if ot does count as SOG then it skews the shooting % stat of the goal-score who never Really attempted a shot anyway..IF the NHL does mot count it as an SOG,then it skews the team shooting% to an even better level as less SOGs produce more goals.. Further...if not counted as an SOG, you could get a situation where a player takes Zero shots on goal during the season but scores 50 goals because he is the greatest net presence guy in HL history and has the uncanny knack of reflecting puck in...If the answer to these questions is that the NIL counts defections off sticks only as SOGs but not defections any other way, that still skews the shooting% stats but to a lesser extent either way..

Now the NHL took away TVR's goal and gave it to Versteeg who they say it deflected.it in..but did they also up his SOGs for the game by 1..if not it makes Versteeg's shooting efficiency stat better even though he never Really third tp shoot..and it worsen TVR's shot efficiency because he did shoot and failed to get credit for the goal astir score. AND this gives a false impression of the impact from the real shooter.

While we are here,
I was wondering the other night, if a shot is going wide, but the goalie reaches out and gloves it, does it still count as a SOG?

No.

NHL SOG are up to the discretion of the individual scorekeeper, however the generally accepted definition is : a shot that enters the goal or would have entered the goal if it had not been blocked by the goalkeeper or another defensive player.

TVR's SHOT actually became a PASS and Versteeg is credited with the SOG and the GOAL .... TVR gets and assist, Versteeg the goal

Its only 1 SOG on the redeflection

So since deflection goals count as shots on goal it is theoretically possible a player gets a 100% shooting percentage to lead the league if he never attempts to actually take a shot at goalie. ..never even deflect puck in off his stick...but only when it goes in off a part of his body..The buy would need to be the greatest net-presence player in the history on the NHL if he did this and got 30+ goals..but I guess Q would point to that guy as an example of what everyHawks forward ought to do...never attempts any real shots at girl..just stand in the one-2 foot area in front if the crease and hope you get lucky off our dmen's point shots you deflect in.This turns the game to.pure luck and ugly hockey...no dynamism...no artistry..just stand stationary in front of the net and hope puck bounce off you and in..Q calls that ideal hockey..but I think TB would prefer Stacks shooting from the slot or one-timing it from the circles...or Kucherov skating last a man off a rude shooting and scoring..you know...shooting "talent"...but I guess under Q, our forwards have precious little of such talent..so just stand in front of the.net and hope to get a.lucky deflection. Dog-poop hockey..Sure you need some net-presence.but to neglect shooting and scoring from mid-distance on pure shots with no screens at the net is to neglect a big part of the game used to good effect by many teams with top offenses..

They generally give out saves on shots stopped that were going wide.

Edit: In my experience anyway.

How can you score a goal on a shot that is going wide of the net? Just because the goalie sticks his stick out and stops a wide shot ... it doesnt mean its a SOG

NHL tracks Missed Shots (shot attempts that go wide of the net or over the net) as well as SOG + blocked shots ... these all add up to SOG Opportunities

Maybe its subjective like "Hits" but from my experience it clearly has to be able to go into the net to be a SOG

Sporting Charts explains Shot on Goal
Not every shot directed towards the net is a shot on goal. For example, a shot that is intended towards goal but is blocked by an opponent is not a shot on goal. Any shot that is intended towards the net but misses the net or hits the posts or the crossbar is also not counted as a shot on goal. The shots on goal statistic allows for the calculation of many other NHL statistics. For example, to calculate a player's shooting percentage (a statistic measuring a player's shooting efficiency), the number of goals scored by that player is divided by the total number of shots on goal and multiplied by 100 to return a percentage. A goaltender's save percentage, one of the most important goaltender statistics, is also calculated by dividing the number of saves made over the total number of shots on goal faced.

The player who holds the NHL record for most shots on goal in a season is Phil Esposito with 550 (1970-71 season).

I'm just going with what they do more often than not. Plenty of sits that are going two feet wide that the goalie gets a piece of are counted as saves.

I don't care much about artistry, I care about winning. if the goal is ugly it still is a goal.

Besides, I loved the Punch-up in Piestany and that makes most members of the Kumbaya Anti-fighting coalition find that event ugly :)

You can't have a team with all players who don't shoot and just are netfront presences, but in this age you cannot be a perimeter team either--you need a balance.
