I didn't catch the GDT's except the last few posts, is this shaping up to be another one of those Canadian guilt trips when they lose?

Virtanen's worst decision, probably, was the unneeded slashing call which he just randomly produced. I mean, Canada was getting penalized already, as if that wasn't bad, and he elected to draw another penalty. But this is obviously because of the nerve-racking situation.

Probably.

It was one of the sloppiest elimination games I've ever seen at this level.

You've got that guy in your crosshairs :D

At this point I'm just joking.

As I said in a previous thread, no one on Canada was even close to challenging for a spot on the tournament all-star team which tells you enough about how this roster performed.

Virtanen produced less than guys like Konecny and Quenneville, while getting double the ES time and PP time. Add in his boneheaded penalties and it adds up to a ****** WJC for him. Dont get the buzz

Blame the coach not the player. Virtanen isn't the one putting himself out there as a screen on the PP.

He was an energy player last year so I have no idea why HC thought he'd come in this year and be an offensive force. It's short sighted thinking.

Frankly I don't even think he should have gone because he was injured for almost 3 weeks leading up to the tournament. Same with point and same with Blackwood serving a suspension.

You can't expect these players to be sitting out for awhile and to come back and do much, that's on Hockey Canada. There were far more deserving players who were healthy enough to make a difference but instead they just picked some guys from last season without thinking about what impact they'll have.

If it was indeed Benning that insisted that Virt gets top-6 minutes as the condition of Canucks loaning him to TC, I can understand Lowry's hesitation. If not then it's beyond me.

Lowry didn't seem to make too many adjustments which was odd when guys clearly were not fitting into their roles very well.

In these short elimination tournaments, if something isn't working, you change it.

You don't have time to have guys play their way into their role.

If that's the case, I'm not sure who is the bigger idiot - Benning or Lowry.

I seriously doubt Jim Benning has any effect on how the coach plays players. It's just Vancouver media trying to spin something to throw more **** on Benning.

Benning said that he sent Virtanen to get top 6 minutes because that's what HC indicated would happen if he went. Jim Benning has no say on anything HC does and it's really just scapegoating.

Some poster(s) posted it, there was no source though, let's see if we get the info. Lack of adjustments was a key in my mind. The Finnish coach made and has made (more) in-game adjustments all tournament long.

Yes, it would be bizarre but not unheard of. Here's to hoping that this wasn't the case.

Is this a thing? I was unawares that GM's had that kind of pull?

They don't.

I am willing to put money on the fact that no matter what Jim Benning wants means jack **** to Hockey Canada. They wanted Virtanen there as part of the team and likely told Benning they planned to use him in all situations as a returning player. GMJB has no ties or influence on whatever stupid things Hockey Canada does.
