It wasn't. The puck literally just went through his legs as he was about to make contact and he tucked his shoulder and everything which is what you're supposed to do to make a nice clean shoulder to shoulder hit.

I love seeing Canada lose, but still feel bad for those kids. Enormous pressure from an entire hockey-crazy country. Now they feel they ley everyone down. They didn't pick or coach the team.

Yes, I just think the roster construction wasn't great. But they are kids, it's a learning experience. Cameron is a woeful choice. anyone who was played and watched a lot of hockey can see all the defects running through TC offering.

this was a great experience for Gavin McKenna, and I got more enjoyment out of watching him than anything else.

It's not even the refs per se, the rules are just different.

Though I generally think IIHF refs are far better at calling games to the IIHF rules than NHL refs are at calling games to the NHL rules.

Hockey Canada going with “grit and sandpaper” over skill at an IIHF tournament is hilarious. This isn’t a 7 game series in the WHL between Brandon and Moose Jaw! They should’ve known how things would be called. Maybe a primer on how to throw an open ice hit would’ve been useful at the first practice, too.

Feel bad for the kids, but the coaching and management gave them no chance.

It actually isn’t a problem. Players are allowed to try to not get hit. Penalties happen when the guys going for a hit put their legs far apart so even if they don’t connect with the body, they don’t let the guy just walk by. When that happens and you only/mainly connect with the leg, you’re rightfully getting called, whether it’s a trip or a a knee. Keep your legs tight on your hit and you’re fine.

Knees will ALWAYS exist. And they will always be going in the same direction as the motion of the attempted body check. A player is in his right to dive away from a check, but if they get hit with that knee in the process, the refs (NHL and IIHF) should be smart enough to realize the intention was a body check and the kneeing ONLY happened cause of the diving away action.

Players jumping out of the way to avoid being hit and leaving their knee out further instead of getting hit shoulder on shoulder or shoulder to chest need to stop being bailed out by these penalties. It's why they keep doing it and it's why players will turn their backs along the boards when they see someone coming to hit them. It's a problem in the NHL and every league.

Yep, NBA and soccer tactics have made their way into hockey. I've seen players constantly baiting refs in games I've been watching. Its definitely worked.

It was a clear penalty. Definitely no 5+20, that would be a bullshit, but clear minor. It wasn't intentional, Gibson wanted to hit the player with his shoulder but came there late. Still a penalty for sure. This would be called in any IIHF game. I understand Canadians fans will be blaming the refs for this, fans whose team loses almost always use to be like that, nothing new.

They should have been told not to make hits because IIHF assholes don.t know what a penalty is.
