They need to make it so the best kids at a young age get enough financial support to play elite hockey, even if it means limiting team expenses (travel, off ice stuff etc) and having fewer "elite" teams that play/practice 5x/week.
We are better off with more kids playing but less getting "elite training" as 10 year olds. Geting the most physically talented kids to junior should be the goal. They can then get near full time coaching at 14 onwards.
A lot of parents don't bother with hockey since, if their kid is good, they can't afford for them to play AAA hockey. My co-worker's first son played AAA and the 2nd son wasn't allowed to play hockey, at all, since they couldn't afford it if he was also good, so he played basketball instead. And these aren't poor people, they are upper middle class. That's crazy.
