Wow, its even MORE f***ed up seeing a helmetless goalie when the skaters themselves DO have helmets on.

At least in the old NHL clips EVERYONE looks like a moron.

Just my opinion, but it made little difference for true safety until you could get an HM-30 helmet (the osgood for younger fans).

Id unironically rather have the reinforced sense of self-preservation and completely unobstructed view that no mask would provide over the sense of false security a 60s/70s fibreglass mask would provide. Not so sure about some of the early cage setups like Tretiaks 1972 mask.

i like his athleticism, by the way, in that clip. When goalies were short, sturdy burpee machines, gymnasts, instead of tall, skinny yogamasters.

No disrespect to either group, its just such a big big change.

I really dont care what shape they are so long as they have real skill for the position.

Its a lot better now than it was around 8-10 years ago, but we came perilously close to having ECHL goalies on talent like Bishop dominate the position because they could maximize the amount of high density foam area presented to the shooter and give you C minuses in everything else.
