The Boston Pride have now won nine straight games, a streak that dates back to January 10th. Winning a tenth straight tomorrow would make them the first ever Isobel Cup champions. Blake Bolden and Gigi Marvin scored goals over the first 12 minutes of the second period, giving Boston the scoring punch needed to secure a 2-1 victory in Game #1 of the Isobel Cup Finals. Hilary Knight would tie the game with a third period power play goal and would also win it in overtime with a penalty shot. Now, the Beauts must do what they’ve only done once before. Beat the Boston Pride. Then they must accomplish something that’s happened only once this season. Beat the league’s top team in back-to-back games.
The first period was an uneventful affair where Boston’s puck possession game collided with Buffalo’s defensive prowess. Zoe Hickel hit the post on a wrister that beat Brianne McLaughlin, but neither goaltender found themselves under duress. That changed 1:18 into the second when Brianna Decker, as she has so many times this season, streaked down the right side of the offensive zone and fired a backhander. As any coach would say, pucks at the net is always a key and in this case, the Beauts goaltender gave up a rebound. Blake Bolden was there to put it home.
The Beauts then learned what so many in the NWHL have learned this season. If you give the Pride an open door, they’ll take advantage of it. Hailey Browne took a tripping penalty that negated a Buffalo power play and Boston set up their offense as they would have with the man advantage. Then Gigi Marvin, possessor of one of the league’s hardest shots, fired one through traffic to make the score 2-0. The puck deflected off of Kelley Steadman, Buffalo’s leading scorer.
Shelby Bram would pull the Beauts to within one with 2:55 left in the period, but Pfalzer’s goal 6:18 into the third would change the momentum and the game. Now Buffalo believed and Boston was tight, making mistakes ill-advised, like when Kacey Bellamy took a body checking penalty to set up 1:22 of five-on-three time. With 14 seconds left on Bellamy’s penalty, it was Steadman who made them pay. The Beauts leading scorer found her shot and put it past Ott to give Buffalo their first lead of the series. But minutes later Bozek would find the box and the Pride would find the net. This time Hilary Knight, as she has so many times before, capitalizing on the power play. That sent the game into overtime, the first in Isobel Cup history, which consisted of a 4-on-4 20 minute sudden death period and, if necessary, a shootout.
After a Beauts player was called for covering the puck in the crease, Knight scored on the penalty shot to win it for Boston. Game two is tomorrow.

The Buffalo Beauts rallied from an opening-game loss in the first round of the National Women’s Hockey League playoffs to upset the Connecticut Whale.
They will have to pull off the same feat in order to secure the inaugural Isobel Cup championship.
Hilary Knight scored on a penalty shot at 2:29 of overtime Friday night to give the Boston Pride a 4-3 victory against the Beauts.
The Pride was awarded a penalty shot after a Beauts defender covered the puck with her hand during a scramble in the crease.

Newark, New Jersey - The Buffalo Beauts and Boston Pride squared off on Saturday night in game two of the Isobel Cup Finals at the Hockey House at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Buffalo needed a win to stay alive in the series, while Boston was looking to take home the trophy. Brittany Ott and Brianne McLaughlin started in goal for their respective teams. The Beauts had an important player back in their lineup in Meghan Duggan, who made her Isobel Cup Finals debut.
The opening half of the first period was 10 minutes only a goalie could love, with the score remaining 0-0 despite several close calls for both teams. 7:23 into the game, Marissa Gedman would take a delay of game penalty and give the Beauts a power play, but they were unable to get any real chances. It would take nearly 12 minutes for the first goal to be on the board, with Blake Bolden and Kacey Bellamy feeding Brianna Decker, who was off to the races. Decker split the Beauts’ defense and moved in on a breakaway, roofing her shot past McLaughlin and putting the Pride up 1-0. Although both teams would have rushes to close out the period, Buffalo would head back to the room down by 1.
The second frame matched the first through the first ten minutes. Although Boston and Buffalo played back-and-forth hockey with chances for both, goalkeepers Ott and McLaughlin stood tall in their nets. Chances were present in the period though, with the goal creases becoming busy with traffic multiple times through the period. Even power play chances couldn't solve the goalkeepers, with Gedman and Hailey Browne both taking hooking penalties halfway through the period. Duggan would also take a interference penalty with 4:52 left in the period but despite good shots, the score remained 1-0.

Boston took the best-of-three series - which was played in Newark, New Jersey - two games to none. The Pride are a fitting champion, as Boston had the best record in the regulation season of the National Women’s Hockey League. From there, the Pride went 4-0 in the playoffs.
The Beauts had come close to pulling a huge upset on Friday, losing on a penalty shot in overtime. Game Two of the series was a case of Boston breaking open a close game in the third period. Brianna Decker of the Pride scored at 11:55 of the first period to open the scoring. The game stayed at 1-0 for almost 40 minutes of play.
At 9:11 of the third period, Marissa Gedman of Boston took a high-sticking minor to give the Beauts a golden opportunity to tie the game. But it backfired when the Pride’s Decker scored a short-handed goal to make it a 2-0 lead. A little more than two minutes later, Hilary Knight added an insurance goal for Boston. Erin Zach ended Brittany Ott’s shutout bid with a goal in the final minute. Ott stopped 29 shots in earning the victory in goal, including 18 in the final period. Brianne Mclaughlin stopped 30 of 33 shots for Buffalo.
The game ended the first season of play for the league. The Isobel Cup is named after the daughter of Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley, who donated a silver cup to the best amateur hockey team in Canada.

Kamloops, British Columbia - Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wisconsin) netted the game-winning goal and Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) scored twice to lead the United States Women’s National Team to a 3-1 third-period comeback win against Canada in its opening game of the 2016 International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship. Goaltender Alex Rigsby (Delafield, Wisconsin) made 22 saves in the victory.
The third period began with 1:04 left on a United States penalty. Just :14 into the period, a loose puck in the United States crease made its way back to Laura Fortino in the high slot, who sent the puck over a sprawled Rigsby to make it 1-0. At 9:59, Monique Lamoureux (Grand Forks, North Dakota) sent a feed to Knight, who skated into Canada’s zone and snapped a wrist shot from the left circle into the lower right corner of the net to even the score. With 6:05 to play, United States took its first lead of the game during a power play opportunity. Decker buried a rebound off an initial shot by Monique Lamoureux from the point. Knight then scored an empty-netter with :19 remaining to seal the 3-1 victory.
The United States will continue preliminary-round play at the 2016 IIHF Women’s World Championship when it takes on Finland at 6:30 pm ET today.
