So last night I got hit in the nose with a puck, required several stitches and has a small break. Anyone else ever had this happen? No, I don't wear a visor. This is the second time I've been hit in the face :(

Yeah same boat as TieClark. I wear a cage. Doesn't look cool, but I get hit in the face a lot and my cage is covered in dents. It kind of scares me to think what I'd look like if I didn't wear the cage.

You should try wearing one too, or at least a visor!

used to wear a visor, got clipped on the lip 2-3 times and luckily still have my teeth. then I realized that the braces I had in high school cost 3k... rather not have that go to waste so I put a cage on.

Some 6'3 200 pound guy lost his balance and chopped my face pretty hard with his stick. Thank god I use a cage. I think he would've split my head in half if I wasn't wearing a cage.

Years ago I took a deflection off my own player right in the nose. Dropped me to my knees. The pain was delayed (as was the blood) but when it hit it was the most intense pain I have ever experienced. Ripped off part of my nostril. Lol... And the cartilage in there has never been the same.

Mine was also a deflection. I took the visor off once I was finished junior. I block lots of shots and I always put my glove in front of my face just in case but this happened so damn fast. Someone on the other team slapped it out of his zone to the neutral zone, me and a guy on the other team both poke for it, off his stick and bam, right in the nose. It actually didn't hurt that much, or as much as you'd think, you're in shock really. I put my hand on my face and there was no blood and I was like wtf? then a few seconds later...it was everywhere. I really, really don't wanna wear a visor but after this...I don't wanna risk losing an eye in rec hockey.

jeez... I don't know what it's like to get hit with a puck to the nose and I don't wanna! Got hit with a basketball right on the button in highschool practice and that hurt enough.

I can't believe that more players aren't wearing visors or cages when you're dealing with NHL slapshots and wristers....

I'm a visor guy but I always shield my face with my arm before dropping to block shots. Put the visor back on the helmet. It's better than losing an eye.

Actually I think getting hit with a basketball in the face hurts worse. You just bleed way, way, way more from a hockey puck. Actually it didn't hurt much at all by the time I near passed out from loss of blood. (Slight hyperbole, but I definitely got woozy)

I was playing on a basketball court with crap outdoor skates/wheels, and the surface of the court was awful, and we were using a street puck. Anyways, long story short, popped off a divot in the ground, bounced off the shaft of my stick, and right into my nose.

So, let's see, you can see a bit better on the ice with no visor but stand the possibility of losing eyesight but a hit to the face, or you can wear a cage and be protected...........hmm

with no shield, it's not will you get hit in the face, it's when and how bad will it be.

saw this guy lose an eye in a game from a deflected shot off the post, it went under his visor. lost the sight in one eye and was having sight issues with the other last I heard

I remember lining a semi-pro game once and under our rules you have to wear a visor if born after 31'st December 1974, and you have to wear it correctly i.e it has to come down to the tip of your nose. A player wasn't wearing his correctly so the ref made him fix it, then he came on to the ice for his next shift and got hit in the face by the puck and was saved by his visor, then he went to the ref at the next stoppage in play and said "If you hadn't made me put my visor on properly I would have a broken nose"

Not to sound like a jerk but, good.

Not sure what your trying to prove out there not wearing a cage. Do you go out without a cup on also?

Hate these pity threads like we should feel bad or care that you got stitches for trying to be some sort of tough guy out there.

Pity? are you kidding me? I shared an experience, I didn't make you post now did I? I'm not trying to be a "tough guy" either. Once you take off a cage/visor it's very hard to put it back on because there's a sense of freedom, you can see so much more of the ice. Not wearing a visor or cage doesn't mean you're trying to be a tough guy...yeesh.

Feel better after getting that off your chest? Inappropriate as hell as I'm sure the guy isn't "trying to be tough". I wear a visor because a cage limits my vision in spots; this could be the case for him as well. I understand you're more protected with a cage but being forced to wear one shouldn't be mandated.

why is it always " you're soo cool, or you're so tough" or whatever. Some of us dont enjoy the game wearing a cage. thank you. although I'm not gonna come on here and look for sympathy for any injuries I get.

People ride motorcycles without helmets everyday, they know the risks. Its their choice.

Btw I do however wear a visor, a puck in the face or a stick in the teeth sucks, but I can't replace my eyes.

Yeah, that doesn't compensate for anything. You still come off as a complete jerk off by making a comment like this.

It's his choice to go visor-less. It's also his choice to share his story with us, perhaps as a cautionary tale.

I had a pretty bad "puck in the face incident" this year while on the bench coaching. I turned to talk to the other coach and took a clearing attempt in the face. It came at a weird angle, nicking me for 5 stitches under the eye and then cleared my nose almost to my ear. I was never told exactly how many breaks were involved, just that I had "multiple nasal fractures". Once they re broke it there was little pain involved, just a ton of swelling and bruising.

Where did he ask for pity? And why are people trying to prove anything by not wearing a cage or shield?
I have been playing for over 40 years. I started before face protection was mandatory in youth hockey and was 13 or so when cages became mandatory and played with one through Junior. I lost teeth with a cage on and had over 100 stitches in my chin and broke my nose. Mostly because the cage gave me a false sense of invincability and I put myself and my head in stupid places. I haven't worn anything for over 20 years and I'm not trying to prove anything to anyone. I have done both and am more comfortable not wearing anything. I try not to put myself in stupid situations anymore but I have been hit in the face numerous times with pucks and sticks. I know the risks going out there and for me the risk doesn't outweigh the comfort. I have no issues with guys who wear face protection for the sake of protecting their face. The issue I have is playing with people who wear face protection and feel all safe and cozy and then play with their sticks over their shoulders and take slapshots that are shoulder height because they have no regard for anyone else on the ice.
I can't figure out why people care about what others are wearing or not wearing. Play your own game, respect other people on the ice, have fun and go home. Come back next week and do it again.

Good post ! Its like a double edge sword with todays equipment in many ways....All of the protective gear that players wear these days cause's many folks to play with complete wreckless abandon, sticks up high, skating full tilt into a crowd etc etc....I firmly believe many of the NHL concussion issues etc are directly related to this.Players back in the day had to play at a little slower pace, especially into the corners because they were not wearing all of the equipment you see today. There were players certainly who played full tilt back then, but they were just braver than others......Now everyone is braver !

Thats great you enjoy your freedom to see a drop better.

Its a game we are all playing for fun right? I dont think there are sny pros here.

Is it worth the risk of a deformed face, losing eye sight, thousands in medical bills for what, to see the ice just a little better out there?
