Puck drop time should be the same as scheduled game time

I really don't understand the issue here.

Why do you care if the puck drop time matches the stated time on NHL.com? You know when the game actually starts, so just wait until then to turn on your television.

There's no way TV is just going to tune in for the drop of the puck without any buildup beforehand. I suspect your suggestion is "well they can buy the half hour slot before the game" which sounds all well and good until you realize we live in the real world and that costs money and there's no way they would want to do that.

It's a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" scenario here, IMO.

Habs fan and I agree 1000%.

The centennial year (2009) was horrible in that regard. Puck drop was always delayed because of some phony celebration and it killed the mood and energy. It was almost as if the players were affected, too.

Just get rid of anthems; so ****ing pointless.

You can get rid of any of the hoopla that happens before the game. It's 2017. I don't need to stand for the anthem and salute the troops before every F'ing game.

As someone who after 25 years of following my team from Europe, finally got to go to a game last November, I am happy they do the national anthems.

It's the other ceremonies they need to move up. Do it during 1st intermission. Give people a reason to stay in their seats

Way, way back...

The HNIC broadcasts started a half hour after the scheduled start time.

You just hoped that no one scored while Juliette was singing and Don Messer was playing his fiddle.

They don't want people in their seats during intermission. Hard to sell beer and hotdogs to someone who doesn't go to the concessions.

I think that the anthems should be taken out altogether. It's a waste of time, half of the team is not representative of that country's anthem, and far too often they select terrrrrible people to sing them. Of course you have legends who sing some of them, but once they retire, kill the anthem before the game.

I never understood the anthem before sporting events either. It seems odd. Like the folks down at the grocery store don't unlock the doors at 8am and play the anthem to get things started.

Or any other form of entertainment. You don't stand for the anthem before a concert or a movie.

The gf and I have sexy times every Saturday at precisely 7pm so the ~8 minute delay until puck drop is perfect. It even allows me 5 minutes to get snacks ready.

I usually wait for the first tv timeout for sexy time. Gives me about 30 seconds to collect myself and put my muscle shirt back on before the commercials end

When I was younger, and had to rely on 320x240 pixel streams, I thought national anthems were only done during games between Canadian and American teams.

Until 2002, all I could do was tune in to the radio to follow games at night and they never said anything about the anthems.

Just about every Lightning game in the history of humanity starts at 7:30 but after the highlight packages and game breakdowns you're looking at a good 10 minutes after that until actual hockey starts.

It is what it is but I'll be honest, I much prefer the 7 PM start time. If the game ends in regulation you're literally getting an extra hour of sleep as compared to a 7:30 game ending at 11 PM if it gets all the way to a shootout.

TSN broadcast the Spengler Cup Final and like all European events, puck drop was precisely at the advertised time, so noon in Davos. Previous years TSN started the broadcast at 5:50 am Eastern but this year they started it at 6:00 am. It was very jarring to go right from a commercial directly to the start of the game (they actually missed the first couple of seconds), no set up, no greeting from Vic Rauter, nothing. That's why they do it that way here. In Europe, obviously they gear their TV broadcasts differently.

I'm ****ing done with the whole production of sports. I don't tune in to the pre-games or post games anymore. And for hockey I'll automatically tack on 10 mins to the "scheduled" start time. 20 mins if I know there's a ceremony.

I can't take it anymore. Everything celebration has lost all sentiment.

You acknowledge that it takes 10 minutes before the puck drops and yet knowing that, you still choose to sit through it. Perhaps you should extend the time of whatever you were doing previously? Whip out your phone and write proposals on the trade board?

I notice Canadian teams always take longer to drop the puck

From what I've seen most US teams we play drop the puck 7-8min after the scheduled game start time. It's always seemingly 10min+ when we play Canadian teams

The worst is when NBC promotes a game at 7pm and it's not until 8pm. Yes, we know you want us to watch the pre game - but by promoting the actual game during a time your hour long pre game is cheats fans. Because of this I try to avoid watching the NBC pre game altogether now since they aren't very honest about it.

NBA on TNT doesn't have to lie and say a game is at a time Inside the NBA w/ Shaq, Kenny, and Barkley are on. NFL doesn't say a game is at 12 pm EST - they call it pregame for reasons.

NBC needs a much better improved National show. I think 10% of people actually like Milbury and everyone else has the personaliry of a dust pan.

This bothers me a lot too. I mean I can always guess it's about 5-10 minutes late, but for some teams it's more, and depending on the ceremonies it can be even more. It's annoying. What the hell, just drop the puck at the designated time.

Since NHL plays in the middle of the night here it's very annoying to set the clock and either be 10 minutes early or you miss 10 minutes of the game.

I mean I could understand it if it was like this in every sport. But it's not. Soccer starts exactly at the scheduled time, if you wanna watch some of the pre-game analysis or anthem you tune in a bit before that. But to most the actual sport has to be the main event, it deserves the specified time.
