PTO Options - Can Dubas still improve the team?

Come on down Corey Perry... time is running short so he’s gotta sign somewhere soon...?

He lives in London in the off-season. It would make sense for him to sign here even if there is a Canadian division. I'm sure this new alignment cuts down the number of UFA options, though.

He also won faceoffs, played a strong defensive game, forechecks well, and is a smart player all over the ice. Things that Martin does not really do that well. Gauthier is also better offensively.

He is nothing spectacular, and clearly the Leafs are looking to have more of an offensive approach to their 4th line using Thornton and Spezza instead, but if you are able to play a low maintenance, simple game where you do a bunch of little things right, like Gauthier has consistently done, you are good enough for the NHL.

I would be surprised if some team, including the Leafs, does not give him a shot on their taxi squad at the very least. He is a valuable option for center depth who would not look out of place in a top 12 if he is needed.

I would be surprised if the Leafs bring in Martin unless they really want what Clifford provided for us once he got here, which was not a lot. I guess he can be stuck on the taxi squad and just rarely be used, but he will probably just go back to the Islanders instead.

Who said anything about Martin? all I said was I didn't want Gauthier.

Boyle? sure Caggiula? absolutely Sheahan I have wanted for 2 years,Corey Perry, Trevor Lewis, Andreas Athanisou? I'm on board with all of them.

Not Fredrik Gauthier I have seen enough of that

Anderson is an above average regular season goalie. I cant imagine how Dubas or any of the Leafs trust Anderson in big games or close games in the playoffs, the Foudy goal still haunts me. In games where u have very few scoring chances, no space or time and Anderson is letting in very weak goals that completely deflate the team. It makes the mission of winning that game go from possible to fighting a monster. Anderson has proven the moment gets to him. I dont have to even watch the Leafs play this season , they will be let down in the playoffs if Anderson is in net and that D core will also prove not good enough. The D core and clutch goaltending have been the biggest issues for years and still are.

Fair enough, but outside of Perry and Athanasiou, who are likely not coming here to be on a taxi squad, the rest are not much (if any) better than Gauthier. You are talking about mediocre 4th liners at best, which is no better than Gauthier.

I wouldn't entirely rule it out, but I do think it's unlikely. Since I'd expect Holl to start out in the top four, I don't think a PTO candidate or Hamonic would be enough to unseat him. Haula in for Kerfoot might make for a closer replacement. Still, I'd be unsure about that happening as well. Contract/cap hit aside, Kerfoot has an important role to play as the 3C.
Kerfoot is a dog.

The more I think about it, I think we'll see a few PTOs signed by the Leafs for camp. As I said before, there's vet requirements for preseason games. IIRC you need 8 guys who have played 30 games last year, or 100 in their career.

I'd bet guys like Tavares, Thornton, Spezza, and Muzzin would appreciate not having to play a ton during the preseason, especially when this season's schedule is a meat grinder. So bring in a few guys on a PTO to meet those vet requirements, and give spare some of our more established guys the trouble. I'd rather see a bunch of rookies and washed up vets this preseason. Give just a game or two for the established roster guys. Don't risk injury or fatigue.

Also, I'm sure someone struggling to get a contract would like the extra exposure that Toronto would give them.

Here's some guys I think might take a PTO. I doubt any would have much of a chance to crack the roster. Grabner, Frolik, Beleskey, Hainsey, Alzner, Condon.

There will be no pre season games

Are you talking about Freddy Andersen, or Craig Anderson?

Depends on how you are planning to play the taxi squad.
If you are rotating guys on and off frequently, you could use it as a way to keep your older guys 'fresh' throughout the year.

Maybe you bring on Perry, and have him, Simmonds and Thorton split the games as to not 'wear out' any of the guys with hard miles.
Maybe you sign a Grabner to under 1m, and see if he can find chemistry with anyone. He is a really good PKer.
Maybe you bring in a Brassard, Soderberg at 1.05m (max without paying for taxi squad members on the cap) just in case Thorton / Spezza simply cant play after the long offseason. Father time is undefeated.
Maybe Hamonic/Rutta/Koekkoek is willing to sign if we tell him one of Bogosian or Holl will be moved once camp is done?
Maybe Athanasiou sees Kerfoot and Robertson as a good fits on a line, and takes a 1 year deal so he can show he knows how to play defensively.
Maybe Matt Martin looks and sees the 4 LW spot open for a grinder, and thinks only Boyd as competition?

I guess more than anything, I want a flurry of action to pull me away from being locked in my house again lol

How does the taxi squad cap work? Can the leafs carry a bunch of league-minimum contracts on top of the salary cap?

The taxi squad is effectively like a guy is in the minors, but instead of going to the AHL team, he is travelling with the team. Otherwise, I am sure the exact same rules apply as if that guy was sent to, and is staying in, the minors.

keep in mind that thornton, perry and simmonds all need to be waived to go on the taxi squad.

If someone's ask is even cheaper expected, Dubas will probably be interested, but thats unlikely. The play is to get accumuliate enough cap space to make a splash come the deadline. That seems to be the plan.

Your not getting this are you? ..constantly with the Martin Bashing on your part..its old..we get it your don't like the kid...get over it!

Athanasiou is an interesting name. He's local but I'm not sure he'd sign here given the competition in the bottom 6. Wouldn't mind being able to put him in the lineup here and there though.

Vatanen, Hamonic and Chara still intrigue me to add depth.
Sad that perry got away at that price
