Maximus subconsciously trying to convince himself by attempting to convince me that everything is going to be good. No slow debilitating injuries or sudden career ending ones. ;)

My thoughts on the first game....

While many would look at the individual efforts, I rather comment on the team effort. Rangers got out played defensively. We didn't have any quality chances 5 on 5. NJ had three men back everytime we entered the offensive zone. They also out numbered us down low in board battles. They blocked a lot of shots and were also able to come out of their end more cleanly than us. We need to take a page from their effort.

Our forecheck was lacking all night except for that time McKegg forced a turnover that led to that open-netter.

Trouba and Skjei did not look good defending, Anderson looked lost on the PK, and overall there wasn't much support or strength in numbers in defending.

It's only one game, but we were badly outplayed defensively. We need to play more as a team. We were outnumbered all over the ice.

Dear Panarin’s concussed Groin,

Kakko is a superstar in the making. When he has his full man strength he is going to be impossible to stop. He already looks formidable in the corners. He was absolutely dominant on that right half wall on the PP. Elite, elite puck handling skills and hand eye coordination. One thing I’d like to see hin work on is his first step. If he improved his burst just a little, it could be the difference between franchise winger and perennial Hart contender.

Fox looked impressive. His poise with the puck was refreshing, and his instincts when pinching already look elite. He’s nifty with his stick in general, chopping the puck into favorable positions. His skating didn’t look worrisome at all, he looked smooth out ther really.

Kravtsov didn’t have a great game but you can see that he has high, high end upside. He looked like a Datsyuk clone on that breakaway chance, and his balance is an underrated aspect of his game. He’s strong on the puck, and will hopefully only get stronger. His hands are right up there with Kakko and Panarin.

Trouba had some good and bad. He looked decent defensively, made a couple of questionable reads. However, he was like a turret from the point, and his shot looked dangerous. Definitely looks better offensively than I thought he would, but getting to play on a PP with Kakko, Panarin, and Mika will do that.

Andersson had an active game. He still reminds me of Drury a lottttttt. Dangerous around the net, sneaky good hands, needs other talented players to really bring the best out of him offensively. He’s not a catalyst in the offensive zone, he’s the garbage man. And that’s a good fit at center with the types of wingers we have. He could be a handful in front of the net on the PP.

Hajek was unremarkable in the best way possible. Looks as good as he did in his stint last year, which was very good.

Greg McKegg definitely looked like an NHL caliber player out there. He was better than Nieves, and could absolutely take his spot. Loved his hustle. Think Elmer looked decent as well, he might have somewhat of an NHL future ahead of him. Probably like a 150-200 game guy at best, but still, not bad for free.

Georgiev faced a couple good chances and gave up goals on most of them. Shestyorkin was impressive overall. He’s a little more raw than I expected, which is honestly kind of encouraging. Allaire can begin to mold him from scratch almost. His physical tools are clearly superior, his strides in net are absolutely effortless. You could definitely see the upside. He has some fundamental things to work on (rebounds) but I expect those to get better as time goes on. He looked very good for a young goalie in his first real NA action.

Only the first game and preseason, but I really liked how Fox and Lias looked in particular. Better than I had anticipated. If Lias can turn a corner, wow..

Kravstov definitely didn't have a great game, but you can definitely see his potential.

Loved Lias’s Game tonight. Aside for his improved skating he just looked different. He was involved in plays tonight.

I didn’t want Panarin but holy shiitake mushrooms, he’s good. He adds this Get ****ed element to our offense. Please, Artemi, make posters like me and RB look like giant horses asses for doubting you and your contract.

Kakko might be the most “talented” player we’ve ever drafted. Unreal how good he looks at 18.

Kravtsov I think started slow and got better as the game went on. He has stupid talent. But he needs to minimize things. It’ll come. He’s a very intelligent kid.

Fox has already replaced ADA. Kid is cool as a cucumber when the puck is on his stick. His decision making is already NHL level. The little plays he makes defensively are terrific and underrated.

Trouba had some good and bad tonight. Overall, when he gets comfortable and more composed, he’ll be problematic for the opposition. I love having a dman ready to lay someone on their asses. (Except when they miss).

I’m worried about Skjei though. His turnovers tonight were straight up stupid and totally avoidable. You can be a fitness freak who’s strong and a great skater, but if you’re forcing stupid turnovers your physical attributes don’t mean ****. Hockey IQ is still the most important trait and Brady looks like he has the hockey IQ of a baked potato. Kids gotta wake the **** up.

I wish we can replace Staal with Hajek like, now. He had a quietly solid game. He kept plays simple and played within himself. We need meat and potatoes dmen like him back there.

The comparison is Perfect.

Skjei and Trouba looked like vets going through the motions in their first preseason game. Feeling things out, just a little off on everything. Skjei needs a constant reminder to stop trying to do so much and let the game come to him a bit. Not really worried about them now since it’s just preseason

Fox and Hájek looked good. Fox is very very smart with excellent hands. He could have had several points tonight if not for Schneider. Skating is fine even if it’s not going to be a strong point for him. He moves well in the close spaces which is good for a defenseman and we don’t need him to skate it all the way up the ice. Hájek looked big and smooth and played an effective game all over. Pairing looked good
Smith and Crawley were meh. Bad goal to give up, occasionally did some good things. If not for the goal against would probably have been an acceptable third pairing performance but you can’t have your third pairing guys give up one like that

Forward vets looked ok. Kakko was just alright for the most part but a big part of that was the Rangers inabity to gain the zone with possession and support each other. Similar to the Dallas game in Traverse. When he had the puck with a bit of time he was great

Kravtsov was ehh ok but got better. As others said, needs to find the balance between skill and simplicity at the NHL level

Andersson was mostly unsexy but effective. A good game from him. In fact one of my favorite things he did was to find a soft spot in coverage in the slot and be open for a pass from Kravtsov and got a good shot off. I think he helped his case a lot

Saw good stuff from Jones at times. McKegg was good, etc. guys that in some ways should stand out for their effort but I don’t expect to be super effective at the NHL level overall

The comment about the teams play overall as a team is pretty spot on though. Not a ton of good structure or support over the ice for most of the game.

Really like Kravtsov and he seems like a great kid but wondering if some time in the AHL to start the season would be good for him? I know he is north america for good but just don't wanna rush him.

ngl i went into this thread about to talk about how what I saw from Lias in particular (between/around playing Borderlands 3) was super encouraging, but it seems y'all have beaten me to it. If he can keep this up, I think he's in the clear.

Also Kakko was awesome, Fox was solid, Kravtsov & Shesty were raw but showed flashes
