Kings Article: Prospects Of Scuderi, Penner Re-Signing With LA Kings; Contract Extension For Brown?

Unless Lombardi and Sutter dont believe that Toffoli is going to be ready for top6 action this year, Penner isnt coming back. Plus, I think one of Pearson/Vey also makes the team out of camp. Add Frattin into the mix for top9 duty, and there just isnt room for Penner.

Scuderi's situation is partially dependent on Mitchell.

Brown's contract will be interesting. I think a cap hit in the low 5's.

Unless a veteran with a sizable contract gets dealt or someone takes a paycut, I do not see how Scuderi can be signed. Otherwise he would have to take a paycut.

He's going to be 35 next season and I think it would be a mistake to give him another 3 years. The Kings will have Forbort and Gravel ready
in 1-2 years as well.

As for Brown, it would be great to get him extended at this time.

Toffoli or no Toffoli, I don't see Penner coming back unless the Kings offered him multi-year deal.....and after another horrendous regular season performance, that ain't happening.

Some stupid team out there will throw him a 4-5 year deal, and it won't be the Kings.

The one thing Penner has going for him is he has completely 100% bought into the system and mentality needed to play in LA. He isn't a productive player in that system, but he's bought into it and might be ok playing here for less. Still don't see how the Kings even offer him a contract though...

I agree and would love to see Penner back.......AS LONG AS he's scratched for the entire regular season and can dress for the playoffs. ;-)

Penner would be insurance. Lombardi has never been partial to throwing a kid out there without a veteran. He always pairs the two no matter what position they play. Though, re-signing Penner would be something very hard to do financially.

As for Scuderi. It does, but not entirely. We technically could fit them both, but it would be the only thing we do aside from re-signing significant RFA's. Though obviously he would be a little wasted and that money would be better spent on Ellerby as a 7th, and then the forward group.

And Brown's contract will be very interesting. I could see him re-signing for $4.5m on the long term if a NMC is thrown in. Hopefully that is the case. Don't really want to see him in another uniform, his jersey is destined for the rafters if he signs that deal.

Dude!!!! I got it... we get Pancakes and endorsement deal with IHOP or Norms then he can recoup the cash he loses signing for 2 million to make the cap work... anyone in marketing???? Sigh....

going to miss Pancakes...

If you guys can't fit Scuderi into the fold, I'm wondering what you think he's worth (or more accurately, what you think he'll get) on the open market on a 3-ish year deal?

It's tough to gauge the contract value of these types of steady defenders, and if Scuderi's available, I'm sure the Leafs will be all over him.

I could easily see the AAV on Scuds new deal topping $4M.

It really depends on what he wants to do. Does he want to stay here and continue winning or chase the money?

If it's chasing the money, my guess is it would be the Islanders. He's from LI

That would be an unconscionable hometown discount. You're saying for all he's done for this franchise as the captain, its second leading goal scorer on the team in the time he's been here (by just 4 goals by the way), being one of the biggest hitters in the league while only missing 12 games since 2005-06, and after taking a pretty good discount the last time he signed a deal that he should agree to a deal just $300K+/per year over what a Kings defenseman with just 102 games of NHL experience just signed for?

I'm telling you now, if he's such a company man that he'd be willing to throw over $1M PER YEAR away as I believe he would be if he agreed to your deal...well, he's either the greatest TEAM PLAYA I've ever seen, or the dumbest.

$4.5M is crazy talk. It's something The Dingo might say...after downing a baby. :sarcasm:

He's 35 years old in December and you think his salary is going to go up in a decreased cap situation? At best Scuderi should get the same contract he just finished, if there's a bidding war. If he gives the Kings a hometown discount (although like Dingo said, his real hometown is on Long Island) it would be an extra year for between $2.75M & $3M. Look at what his comparable D-Men UFAs made last season... Lydman, Roszival, Ference.

If he gets $4M, someone's desperate and crazy...and good luck to Rob.

You're allowed to be over the cap in training camp, right?

I would consider signing Penner and telling him he has to beat out Frattin, Holloway & King or else he will be traded/waived before opening night.

I guess the real cap issue is Scuderi + Mitchell, and if WM will be healthy.

We'll see, but for a player in his position to guarantee 7 years with a franchise without being moved, I'd say the discount is in line. Of course he is worth more, and will likely make in the 5's somewhere, but I just wouldn't be surprised if something like that were to happen with Brown. Also, looking at our salary structure after this season, that is right around the number we need to get him clocked in at. I think Dean is aiming at $5 million on the nose, which is pretty close to that max we could possibly pay him without blowing up significant aspects of our team. Every player on the team can't earn $5m+ and with Brown, we'd have 6 players on the team earning $5+m, and many more awfully close...

That could have unintended consequences because if you're not cap compliant by the start of the season, teams are going to demand payment for the favor of assisting you back to getting under the cap.

With the Regehr signing, it spelled the end of one of Scuderi or Mitchell. Hopefully not both. If Mitchell is healthy, Scuds is gone.

I see Frattin as basically a direct replacement for Penner. He is physically solid and works hard and from what I hear he can play on the left side. If he scores at even HALF the rate we think he can, he will be twice as productive as regular season Penner.

I love Pancakes, I really do, and I'd actually love to see him back -- but only at a major discount. I think he is an ideal 3rd line winger, but I don't think he'd take that deep a pay cut and I wouldn't blame him.

Streit just got $5.25M, I know he is a PMD, but people are always desperate for defenseman. Volchenkov and Ballard, for example, both make over $4M, and let's not forget the Redden debacle 5 or so years ago.

Was anyone else following Penner on twitter today? He ripped an LA blogger to shreds! Classic Penner!

Blues Shattenkirk supposedly getting 4 @4.25/year from the Blues (info under trade rummors on main board)... That level is tight... anything over 4.25+ and 4 years isn't looking good for keeping Scuds.... :(

Classic Holmgren. Awful move.

I'll need to check that out.
