Is wood eligible to play in the AHL playoffs being signed as late as he is?
Look at Ufko last year for your most recent example. He signed long after clear day and played a key role in the Milwaukee playoffs last year.

So yes, Wood is eligible for the AHL playoffs.

Mind you in Ufko's case, he signed a 3-year ELC that started this season, and played on a PTO at the end of last season. Whereas Wood signed an ELC that begins right now. So Ufko didn't burn a year. Wood was probably incentivized to sign precisely because they plan to burn the year (at least that's what frequently happens with top college prospect signings).

And I think it's high time we started treating our top prospects with the assumption that they are going to fast-track to the NHL. It's a PROBLEM if your #15 OA winger draft pick needs 3 years in the minors, actually. That shouldn't be happening. I would play him every single one of our meaningless games down the stretch, then send him to Milwaukee. Play him like you actually believe he's going to be a star for the Preds sooner rather than later. Burn the ELC year. Take the approach that you EXPECT him to be an impact player in the NHL, and play him with that presumption the rest of this season.

To clarify, college draft picks like Wood can sign ELC starting following season and then play in AHL on ATO but NOT NHL or they can sign ELC starting current season but then are NOT able to play in AHL (until following season).

Why wouldn't they give him a game or two? There's literally no better chance to give him a look than right now when we're absolute garbage and have already been eliminated.
Did you suddenly forget who our GM and Coach has been this season and the dumb decisions they have continued to make? That's your answer as too why.

Gaaahhh.. guess I'll just wait and see what happens LOL
Yeah, I'll wait and see. I think a key thing to remember is these kids are still in school. So they'll skip a few classes to come to play NHL games. Whether they would for AHL games is a different story.

On the AHL site, they don't distinguish between NCAA or CHL, just saying NHL-drafted prospects can be signed and play in the AHL playoffs, independent of the clear-day roster. However, historically I didn't find it easy to find cases of NCAA players doing this. (In 5 minutes of looking anyway). But you have to keep in mind those younger NCAA guys like Wood are still in school, still taking classes, still need to write their exams. Go get the NHL paycheck and burn off your ELC year, sure, that's an important step for your future. Past that... :dunno:

Funny you mention NCAA guys not typically going to AHL after their season, because Wood's teammate just did it: Lightning sign F Connor Kurth to a two-year, entry-level NHL contract | Tampa Bay Lightning

Yeah, I don't know anymore, but I don't see anything outright barring NHL-drafted NCAA prospects who didn't sign ATOs from stepping straight into the AHL and playing AHL playoffs.

That said, very few seem to.

You get lots and lots of cases of NCAA "free agents" signing and playing in the AHL. You get lots and lots of cases of NHL-drafted NCAA prospects signing NHL deals for NEXT SEASON and then playing AHL THIS SEASON on ATO. What I didn't find (admittedly in a very cursory survey) was NHL-drafted NCAA prospects signing NHL deals for THIS SEASON and then playing AHL playoff games THIS SEASON. So whether that's just schooling or there is some other prohibitive ruling, I don't know anymore. :D

It isn't permitted unless you sign ATO and start ELC in Fall. One of the guys who covers Springfield (Blues AHL) said he checked with AHL about Snuggerud's AHL eligibility (in same situation as Wood) and was told conclusively he wasn't eligible.

Seems to fit the data. I just wish they could point to the actual rules that state this. Oh well. :thumbu:

Edstrom got mono after the second-to-last regilar season game, he's soon ready to play again... Except he can't get hit right now because his spleen could burst as it might still be swollen from the disease. There's hope he could play soon.

Docs taking regular images and blood samples to make sure everything looks ok.

I see Luke Reid signed in the ECHL likewise. So that's 2 of our 3 Covid-exception 5th-year NCAA guys who we have shown no interest in. I don't see Chase McLane listed with anybody else, perhaps he is just going to use his degree outside of hockey or something. Anyway, that's 3 guys we can no doubt take off our prospects list.

Other prospects with signing deadlines coming up:

June 1:
RD Dylan MacKinnon
G Juha Jatkola
LD Anton Olsson

August 15:
W Isak Walther

I would be a little surprised if we don't sign MacKinnon, but I can imagine the other 3 being let go. :dunno:

Thanks for the upd. Was wondering why he wasn't playing.

don’t forget Nilsson

Also couldn’t we bring Frondell to MKE if we draft him ?
Plays overseas so it would depend on if he had a contract or not but assuming he doesn't... we should be able to yes.

Nilsson did great in the SHL for his age bracket. Both him and Edstrom are near the top of the production charts for 19/20 year old.
