Cristall vs Hutson is really interesting because they are the same prototype: absurdly high hockey IQ, highly skilled, creative, but small.

Hutson is better in high-pressure situations (see the WJC) thus far and has a chippiness and physicality to his game that Cristall doesn't. Hutson's really taken a step since that stupid penalty he took in the first game against UMass. I also think he has a slightly higher ceiling than Cristall, but that's hard to judge. In a vacuum, I take Hutson, and he is who I voted for.

But... the Caps have a much greater need for Cristall than Hutson. You can really only have one D-man in the lineup who doesn't PK, and the Caps already have Chychrun. Also, a lot of Hutson's value would come on the PP, so he loses value if not on PP1. If the Caps re-sign Chychrun long-term, I think they have to trade Hutson. (This is one reason I am hesitant albeit not against re-signing Chychrun for 3+ years. But that's for a different thread.)

Cristall, OTOH, is everything the Caps are lacking. He has the potential to be a top end scorer. He's also extremely creative which has basically disappeared from our forward group. Bonus: he's good at shoot-outs.

Going with more floor than upside here but I've seen Miro do it at the pro level and Hutson and Cristall have not. Not that Miro has a low ceiling either, I think he'll be a really good middle 6 winger in the league for a long time and a total pain in the ass to play against

I voted Lappy. He's shown he can be a solid NHL player. He still needs to put it all together and get back in the lineup, and maybe he won't, but he's shown more at this level than anyone else on the list.

Voted Hutson again for the same reason as last time. FWIW my rankings are:

1. Hutson
2. Cristall
3. Leonard
How does the NHLe compare between Cristall and Leonard? Leonard strikes me as very likely to be an NHLer, but I'm assuming that his 'star' potential is lower as measured by Bader (at least I think you refer to Bader's model).

As for me, I went Cristall. I do think Hutson has the highest potential, but Cristall is closer to the NHL (and still has a very high ceiling).

With Cristall I think the question remains the degree to which the skating, strength and off puck play limit his effectiveness. Such areas can be groomed. Sometimes it just takes time. But as-is I think there's still some pretty substantial work to be done for him to become that dynamic go-to player they need. With the puck on his stick he can make plays few players can...but to what degree will he continue to put in the work to help recover pucks? Then in addition just how much more explosive can he get to be a transitional boost? It's a lot to ask any young player. Leonard checks off those pro toolkit boxes without any hesitation. With Cristall it's still TBD no matter how much of a beating he's giving fellow juniors...

For me Hutson's skating is mainly what distinguishes him from Cristall for the second spot. He's smoother and that should enable him to more easily get out of hot water and into narrower pockets of dangerous ice.

Voting Cristall.

But the real answer is hell if I know.

There's a dozen factors I can think of to tilt in one way or the other, but it really comes down to 2 in favor of AC for me:

1-I think AC is just a bit more physically ready for the NHL, he's "closer" in that respect, and proximity to the NHL matters to me in prospect rankings.

2-CH gets the majority of his points on the power play (3 even strength goals, 6 even strength assists out of 5 and 15 total). When will he be good enough in other situations to play regular minutes on D in the NHL.

Have to stop myself from rambling through the other factors. There's a lot of potential/likely unconscious bias. (is it still unconscious bias if you know it might be present just not how much weight to give it, or what category of bias it is?)

Edit to add, I do think Hutson's ceiling, given positional value, is higher, likely the highest of any of our prospects.

Cristall and Leonard are very close both in star potential and NHLer potential. I think in the preseason Leonard was above Cristall in NHLe projections, but now they've swapped.

The top 3 (Hutson, Cristall, and Leonard) are in a tier of their own and there's not too much separating them. Any order of those in the top 3 seems perfectly reasonable.
