Baker LOVES him. Any time the name comes up he has a lot of positive things to say. He did caution on a podcast appearance (not his show…I don’t remember which one but it was in the last week or so) that while Poltapov’s contract is finally up after this year…that he has very specific plans for himself. He wants to prove to be a great player before coming over. He doesn’t say it but my guess would be that having to do with behind able to jump right to the NHL. His role over there doesn’t allow for an easy breakout year like that…but it fits what we need in the organization. A net front bottom six guy who produces and plays hard. So he wonders what comes next. If there isn’t an opportunity to move up the lineup there…he’s never going to put up star numbers. But he is learning very valuable things for where he slots in North America. So it’s a lot of good with one potential issue with waiting longer. You know they want to get him over here as soon as they can. But is that what he wants if he still hasn’t seen a bigger role yet in the KHL?

Anyway…two assists today.

Don't think we could've asked for a better start to his season with that goal and then today's assists even if it's only in 3:55 of TOI today.
They cut his ice time after nine shots on goal in eleven minutes and a SHG!?!?

That's what it looks like at EP:

...which looks legit:

First assist is on the 4th CSKA goal playing the puck to Abramov who just wheels in and scores one from mid range while PP drives the center lane.
Second assist was the 6th CSKA goal - he strips the puck and centers to Abramov who misses before Sorkin puts it home.

This is the bounce back start that he needed. A full season of this play will have the Sabres begging him to come over next summer. Maybe he had a nagging injury, personal issues last year or he's just approaching games differently but great to see him fired out of a cannon this year.

Line chemistry in hockey is a beautiful thing. You know it when you see it. Three players flowing out of the defensive zone together, knowing where each other is going to be, understanding where each other likes to receive the puck.

Three guys playing off the same sheet of music.

That’s what we’re witnessing in the early goings of the 2024-25 KHL season. The chemistry being built by Sabres prospect Prokhor Poltapov and CSKA linemates Maxim Sorkin and Vitali Abramov, who have been teammates for three years but have rarely joined forces, is leading to some pretty sweet music.

---------------------------

The productive night gives Poltapov seven points (2+5) through the first three games of the season, which ties him with Sorkin for second in KHL scoring. Abramov is currently alone atop the KHL leaderboard with five goals and nine points.

Sweet music indeed.
