Mark Giordano was born in Toronto but never drafted. He spent years in the AHL and a year in Russia. You never know how long it takes for a prospect to develop.
Revisionist history.
Dubas and Hunter said post draft they were comfortable moving back not because they had any specific player targeted but they felt the prospects available there were very close to who was available earlier and were comfortable they'd get a similar quality prospect and additional picks by moving down. Rewatch the post-draft interviews.
(Re-reading there's a bit of a double negative, but if your post reads "If Hunter believed he had top-pairing potential then he wouldn't have moved down to take him" makes more sense. Who the hell trades down twice for late second/early thirds to potentially skip over a guy you think is a future top-pairing D? If you think he that good, and you covet him that much you;d just go and make the pick and not gamble another team scoops him in the picks you just slid down past.)
Yeah, that's the official statement, but it seems rather deliberate to have passed on a player, and traded down not once but twice and then go for a reach pick at 34 with higher profile players on the board.

What makes more sense? That they saw a way to pick up a few extra assets without taking on much risk, because they knew one of their targets would still be there? Or that they risked giving up on their top choice and hoped that none of the other 10 teams saw the potential they knew was there, all to pick up a late 2nd and 3rd?
"Profile" has nothing to do with it. There are tons of times that players get misrepresented to rankings sites, even though all 30 actual teams hold them in lower or higher regard.
Yep. Drafting defensemen is a bit of a wild guess. Which in part is why i'm a bit wary of drafting them in the 1st round (or at least in the top 10). Because odds are there are going to be a lot better players taken much later on the draft.
Forwards are a hell of a lot easier since offensive totals translate somewhat better - ie if you aren't scoring in juniors you're more than likely to not score in the NHL.
Are you aware that the percentage of 1st round draft choices that are d-men is higher as far as becoming actual NHL players than the percentage of forwards that are picked in the 1st round?

Think Dermott will become a Giordano.
He just got the aura in him and he is a much better player than Giordano was at 18.
For real, lets come back in 7 years and see where Dermott is.
Wait….What?
"If the reports from the Pens were true"
As in…. Pens fans on HF boards? Sure, lets trust their input, instead of Mark Hunter & Kyle Dubas who targeted him in the trade.
"If he is good enough we should start developing him as soon as possible"
What does that even mean? Shouldn't we be developing him regardless?
Its amazing how fans can watch a kid play 2 or 3 games and can project his potential. I'll be shocked if Dermott doesn't spend the next 2 years in Erie and then at least a full season in the AHL. Sure he looked impressive in 2 games but this kid isn't suddenly a sure-fire prospect

It's a bit early to say that the guy who we drafted in the second round last year will become a top 5 defenseman in the league. Especially because I'd bet you're making that projection based only on the rookie tournament.
No I'm with you I like the Giordano projection. There is an efficiency, a maturity and a compete level to his game that hints he could be really great. Top pairing even.
I think at 34 is an absolute steal, and overshadowed by the joy of grabbing Bracco late. People like the flash and skill of Bracco but Dermott was the real homerun in the 2nd round. They were committed to the trade down and the gamble clearly worked I think they were more onto how good Dermott really was outside of McDavid/Strome than many of the teams. If they traded down from 34 to say 38-40 and another third I think he is gone imo.
A lot of people haven't noticed this but Dermott only has 1 year left in JR eligibility before going pro or returning as an OA player. He spent his 16 year old season in the OJHL and jumped to the OHL at 17.
I think they traded down to acquire more picks but had Dermott pegged as an insider's choice the whole time and scooped him up at 34 while they were ahead.

Really... pretty impossible to project what a D man can and will turn into at this point... Even the top guys don't always end up with what you expect.
Norris trophy nominees, top three voted D, for the last five seasons...
PK Subban - 2nd round, 43rd overall
Roman Josi - 2nd round, 38th overall
Erik Karlsson - 1st round, 15th overall
Duncan Keith - 2nd round, 54th overall
Alex Pietrangelo - 1st round, 4th overall
Zdeno Chara - 3rd round, 56th overall
Kris Letang - 3rd round, 62 overall
Ryan Suter - 1st round, 7th overall
Shea Weber - 2nd round, 49th overall
Niklas Lidstrom - 3rd round, 53rd overall
Lubomir Visnovsky - 4th round, 118th overall
Do you really think Lidstrom or Chara projected anything more than a 5-6 D at this point, because he was drafted in the 3rd round? [HF logic]
Really.... projecting what a D, or even a G will be at this point is nothing but a crapshoot.
He was drafted at #34... above 8 of the last 11 Norris nominees.. and who really saw those "later" draft picks becoming what they were a few months after their draft? His ceiling is a Norris winner, his floor is a bust. He will likely end up somewhere in between.
