Lehkonen himself was a 2nd round pick and become a versatile player in the NHL. Why should we be satisfied with a 2nd round pick? Like you said there is a very small probability that a 2nd round pick will make the NHL. Lehkonen has already made the NHL. Why trade Lehkonen for some thing that we hoped becoming a player like Lehkonen. It just didn't make any sense.
These types of players are going for firsts these days, thanks to Tampa and their success. Problem is when they brought in both Cole and Goodrow for 1sts combined those players were making only 500k more than Lehkonen makes right now and both were signed for an additional season. By next season as an RFA with arb rights he could be looking at close to a million more, at least. And the Tampa trades were pre-pandemic cap. Teams have to be taking this into consideration.
