The end of the prime video series has Mcdavid crying and having an emotional breakdown on camera after Game 7. 10/10, better than porn FYI

On the one hand - he's a generational talent who gave every ounce of everything he had and came so close to the ultimate prize to come up short, while dragging a team that simply wouldn't even be close without him into it. And it's very raw insight into a very human moment for a guy who usually shows the personality of a piece of white toast.

On the other hand - it's the Oilers, and it's pretty delicious.

So based on practices the last few days, I'm guessing we get a lineup of...

Heinen - Miller - Boeser
DeBrusk - Pettersson - Sprong
Hoglander - Raty - Garland
Bains/Aman - Blueger - Sherwood

Hughes - Hronek
Soucy - Myers
Forbort - Desharnais

I like it. Personally I would switch Myers and Desharnais but I am not sure it makes a difference if Fobort look like he did in the preseason.

So given those lines, it's a lot like we thought. Bains and Raty are competing against Aman for a spot on the opening day line-up. If neither Friedman or Juulsen are playing, it seems they've made up their minds. Possible they find a way to keep both on the roster.

Really worried about our defense this season. It was already looking a bit rough/like a noticeable downgrade heading into the season, and now both Forbort and Juulsen look like they've possibly regressed to borderline unplayable on top of that, while none of the younger guys look ready to step in yet.

At least Descharnais looks good and Myers hasn't appeared to fall off yet.

Hope Suter and Joshua are good to go soon - that's an excellent forward lineup with everyone healthy.

D pairings are a bit more worrisome.

The thing with the d-pairings, and I said this after signing Forbort and Desharnais, is they are really just a solid #2/3 LD away from putting together a good group. Hopefully the Kings are terrible and Gavrikov makes his way over here. He'd be perfect.

I feel the same. Adding another reliable body to the top 4 means pushing someone else down into a more suitable role.

Forbert looks like a bit of a stretch but I also understand the idea behind leaving a roster spot open to start the year that depth players can compete for. Maybe someone takes a big, unexpected step forward and you really get some efficiency out of their contract/performance ratio. If it doesn't happen then you have kept your powder dry and look at add a quality defender that shakes loose during the season.

Jake Walman is the guy I’d be keeping an eye on, personally. San Jose took full advantage of Detroit’s desperation this off-season and will probably send him out the door for another pick soon enough.

Yeah, Bains should really be in the thread title.
Raty vs Bains vs Aman
vs the health/timeline of Suter
and then the return of Joshua
Assuming the health of every other forward (knock on wood) Bains and Raty have to play well enough to force Aman to be sent down. They can't just be okay or kinda good enough. Aman already is that. Unfortunately for Bains he also doesn't have the utility of being considered a centre at this level at all. Whatever anybody thinks of Aman at centre; he can, and has played extended minutes there.

Matheson could be another good target if the Habs decide to trade him. Especially if salary could be held. They're also far more likely to be a middling team still than the Kings.

Forward depth looks incredible, even if they're (ideally) missing a top flight, play driving winger. Probably the best since the 2011 team.

Defensive pairings are a concern. We'll see how much Tocchet trusts that bottom pairing. Last year when injuries hit and Hughes/Hroneks minutes jumped way too high, Alvin moved pretty quickly to acquire Zadorov which helped tremendously.

I think once Joshua gets healthy and they get a better handle on how Raty & the new acquisitions play in the regular season, we'll see some of the depth moved for a piece on the blueline to stabilize things.

If they're able to get that top 4 dman I think Edmonton is the only team that really stands in their way in the West (I don't trust Dallas' off-season moves, and Colorado is a big TBD until they know what's going on with Landeskog and Nichushkin).

Excited to see how they look tonight now that they're going with the full lineup!
