We iced our top 2 lines as well as Noesen and Palat. Also Dougie, Dillon, Casey on the backend. This certainly wasn’t a preseason lineup with a lack of talent.

Two lines and two top four defenseman should've been plenty. The lack of talent isn't an excuse for that one.

Oh we did?

Shows how much I cared about the Preseason when I assumed we were icing yet another AHL lineup and not watched the game.

When's Game 1 of the season again?

From what I saw though, like 85% of the "issues" were from the ahlers, not the main guys. That's not to say the nhl guys were perfect either but I think it's more just preseason thing and not something to actually worry about honestly

Fair enough, I don't put a ton of thought into the preseason either. It def wasn't a lineup like the one in Montreal though.

My thoughts too. Sure some regulars looked rusty, it was their first or second games. But most of the mistakes that led to goals were on guys who won’t play on the team. The 1st, 2nd and 4th goals against were certainly made by AHL guys.

On the other hand, I do like Keefe calling them out for it and not just being ok with it being a preseason game

Markstrom is gonna get his turn sooner rather than later if he starts the year cold. Even poor preseason play could get us there.
Yeah he's definitely on the 'gotta show me' list, especially after his poor end to last year - I get they traded half their D, he wasn't happy with being held hostage, yadda yadda yadda...now it's the time to put up.

I wonder if that had more to do with the lack of talent on the ice than it had to do with effort.
The Montreal game definitely was a lack of talent.

Last night was a stinker.

It reminded me of last season with the teased comeback that was ultimately failed, complete with the goal with the extra attacker, which didn't tie the game because we were down by two and not one lol.

Reminiscent of last year also was giving up 3 goals in a 5 minutes stretch, including two of them with like a minute left in that second period. Those sudden collapses that put us too far behind to rally were a repeated theme last year. Losing games in one sudden bad stretch was our trademark.

What I saw yesterday was us getting a first period lead and trying to play a defensive shut down game too early. The second period was way too early to try to bar the door. We came out in a shell in period two. We should have stayed aggressive. Sit on a two goal lead early if you must, but not a one goal lead. Bury them early, don’t turtle down, that’s better. Letting them come back at us put us on our heels.

Encouraging was, that when we tried to come back in the third we looked like we had real juice. We had only like 12 shots first two periods but as many in the third alone I would estimate.

Also Jack Hughes was skating and moving very well in our first look at him. I can’t imagine anything that would be more important for us than that.

Maybe it's not the goalies, Markstrom is another one on the scrapheap. 3.00 GA .895 SV

It's gonna be hard to properly evaluate any of the goalies here until Rogalski is fired.

I don't understand how we keep bringing in new goalies, and we fire all these coaches, yet he still remains.

It feels like every time a coach seems like he's about to be fired here (Hynes and Ruff) people go around acting like they'll be the head coach here forever and they have a job for life, and that they have things on Shero/Fitz that keep then safe and in the position almost forever.

I never believed that about any of the head coaches, but that feels much closer to accurate with Rogalski.

It almost feels like Rogalski may just be the only goalie coach during Fitz's GM tenure. It's not completely rare for a goalie coach to last a handful of GM's and a dozen head coaches. Benoit Allaire (though it appears he may have semi-retired or transitioned into a more hands-off role this offseason) and Bob Essensa have lasted for decades with their current teams.

They actually get results though.

We've made the playoffs twice in the last 12 years. Tatar disappearing in the playoffs is the least of my worries right now. If he can play well with Nico again and produce during the regular season, it's an easy win for what he's being paid. If he doesn't, he's gone after the season.

Anyway, that's Palat and Tatar down. Whose next on the bitching carousel?
I love the way you set the bar low

For Tatar or the Devils? If it's Tatar he signed a cheap one year deal. What expectations should I have? Top line player or bust? If he's good, great. If he's not, who cares? If it's the Devils, let's not put the cart before the horse and start hand wringing about playoff performance when we're still not even consistently making the playoffs. If we make the playoffs and Tatar disappears again, is the season a disaster?

Of course yes. Player with 1 mil salary should be consistent playoff performacer. There will be no deadline for trading better top 6 forward btw, so if Tatar will not produce 60 points in the season and will not produce at least in 60% of playoff games - Fitz should be fired.
