There's a 100% chance that Carrick will clear waivers. Every team has a Carrick or two in the AHL. Also, a team has to keep him on their roster or they themselves would have to waive him to send him to the AHL. You can't just steal other team's propsects and stash them in the minors. Who has room for Carrick on their NHL roster?

I've never been particularly impressed with him at the AHL level. I don't think he's an NHL defenseman. Anybody can have a good preseason game or two. Remember Patrick O'Sullivan, Ryan Bayda, Niklas Nordgren, etc?

Carrick's ceiling is Brett Carson. It doesn't matter if we lose him.

PDG also has a 90% chance of clearing. I'm not going to say 100% but it's close.

On my phone so not snipping, but Colorado does.

Why would Colorado have any more room for unproven Carrick than their own unproven guys they are planning on using at this point? Hayley is probably correct.

The Canes are known as having one of the better defense cores and actual defenses in the NHL, and picked Klas Dahlbeck off waivers last year.

I definitely think it's more likely than not that he'd clear, but to say 100%?

At least Dahlbeck had played like 90 nhl games. I think Carrick played like 2. Seems like small enough chance that 100% is close enough. And I certainly won't lose sleep if we lose him, though I'd like to keep him.

Well, like BBA said, the main assumption we have here is that Carrick is actually >= Dahlbeck. And that may not be the case. But so far it seems like he might be.

But I suppose league-wide perception goes into that as well. A worse player that has more experience may be more likely to be claimed than a better one with less (and I'm sure we aren't receiving pro scouts from the other 30 teams at each of our training camp sessions).

? Last season Tennyson got sent down after having a terrible camp and they needed someone to expose for expansion. They had a big hole on the bottom pair. If Tennyson had made the team and their was no expansion draft, they probably don't claim Dahlbeck.

Indeed, that's exactly my point.

You're 100% sure that not a single team in the NHL is going to have a big hole on the bottom pair this year?

I think we agree for the most part, I just take issue with essentially saying there's no risk whatsoever of losing Carrick if we tried to send him down.

(In fairness, if your point is founded on Tennyson being the worst defenseman in the NHL, and we had him, so therefore no other team will have that issue, arguments have been founded on worse )

On a positive note, the new uniforms looked really good in live play. I wasn't sure about the black trim at first, but I'm sold on it now.

Totally agree! I didn't buy one of the new sweaters but I'm def picking up one of these.

On another note- I was displeased when they selected Bean- but I really liked his play last night, especially on PP, although he should have shot the puck a little more.

Am I wrong?

I watched on my phone so the quality wasn't great, but they look so much better than the previous ones. AINEC.

And the photo you posted was gorgeous. I really wish the NHL would let both teams wear their dark uniforms more than just in outdoor games.

The two aren't mutually exclusive :P

Taking the "he's not going to get claimed" route is the safest play in the book, as there are hundreds of players sent down and probably only 10-20 that get claimed. You'd be silly to not take those odds if you're trying to predict an outcome. But it's worth remembering that of those hundreds of players, 10-20 get claimed. I don't think anyone is saying it's a mortal lock that either of those players get claimed, but of the players around the league that will hit waivers the first time this year, I would put them in the top 25 or so that would likely attract some degree of interest. PDG's NHL experience has been largely positive but nothing overwhelming. There are teams out there that would love to have that kind of option in a 4th line capacity or even to keep in the pressbox until needed. Same deal with Carrick. People know how crowded the blueline is here and they're probably going to look a little harder at guys that don't make our team than they would at places in other locations for that reason. There's just not a lot of room.

Short form, you're always going to be in the black betting against fringe NHL players becoming impact NHL players. I don't think anyone is claiming that it would be catastrophic to lose either player, but it would suck if we lost a good depth player or a player who goes on to be a solid 3rd line player or really decent bottom pairing defenseman for no return. The hand wringing if you're getting the sense that's happening is probably more akin to that than feeling like we're going to lose a star to waivers.

I thought he looked OK. Things were so wonky in the defense pairs and Tampa was running such a strange pair of lines that I don't want to over-analyze him, but he definitely didn't look out of place in comparison to the experienced NHL'ers out there.

If Bean comes through as a strong addition, I really don't know what we'll do on defense. We already have 3 good LHD, all 23 or younger, who all slot perfectly into the lineup. We *have* to trade someone at that point, we can't stick Fleury or Bean in the press box.

It's not just you. We are sarcastic with everyone...think of it as an indication that you belong here.

If someone doesn't belong here... they'll know.

It's not anywhere close to 10-20 players claimed, at least not at the beginning of the season. Last year there were 6 players claimed, in 15-16 there were 5, 14-15 there 4, and in 13-14 there were 5. It seems to be about five players per year claimed at the beginning of the season.

You can't stash someone in the press box if you don't have room for them on the roster. I don't see teams seeing a guy like Carrick on waivers and then sending down someone who made their team before they've even played a game to make room for him. Remember that Brett Carson cleared waivers at the beginning of the season two years in a row (one of those years after a season where he played 54 NHL games as a solid bottom pairing guy) and only got claimed after Rutherford called him up because he thought he had an Ian White trade completed and needed Carson to play, then had to put him on waivers to send him back down. Maybe if Carrick gets waived midseason when teams have run into injury problems or find out that some of the guys they were counting on aren't any good he'll get claimed, but I can't see it happening at the beginning of the year. But to be honest I can't see him getting waived midseason; this team is well known for skirting waivers by using emergency call-ups. The year that Carson got claimed they had already called him up and sent him down twice without using waivers because they were using emergency call-ups.

Peters may not love the idea, but Bean has played on his off side with some regularity before. Not to say I don't agree that they'd probably be looking to trade someone if everyone has panned out at that point. Just that they may have time between letting Bean ripen in the AHL and starting him on his off side if need be.

Hopefully we end up in a scenario where we have a very valuable excess dman to trade. I do think Bean will be pretty good, and Fleury certainly looks promising to this point.

My gosh, if Bean can play his off side effectively...

Slavin - Pesce
Hanifin - Faulk
Fleury - Bean

With everyone in their athletic prime, would be pretty close to a Platonic ideal of what a defense group can be.

Salary cap would be a bear, but still.

It'd also be a waste...

If all of those guys become top 4-level dmen, let's get some forward help and sign a bottom pairing guy lol.

If Bean looks legitimately ready, that also maybe opens up the chances for a Hanifin trade - IF the return is good enough.

I think I'd take my chances with a Bean-Pesce 2nd pairing with the expectations that Pesce can kind of hold things down while the rookie takes his lumps.

Or you could rejigger the lineup to go Slavin-Pesce / Fleury-Faulk / Bean-TVR

I don't think Hanifin has been so great that we would be experiencing a major dropoff in play, unless Bean just ended up being an outright disaster. In which case, he's still only a 3rd pair guy.

That kind of jumps the gun assuming that we know exactly what Fleury is right now, but he seems to have a relatively high floor at least.

Not if it wins a Stanley Cup.

Slavin/Pesce/Fleury eat up almost all PK minutes in a game, Faulk/Hanifin/Bean feast on the PP. Split the even strength minutes evenly across three pairs. Nobody gets gassed, nobody plays outside their strengths.

Sick defense is sick.

Yeah, that's true. For all that got said about Nashville's D last year, that bottom pairing did get feasted on.

Wonder how long that window would be open. Not sure how the cap would work, but if we ever became a cap team, it just might as long as we could control the forward cap hit.

I think at this point we are pretty committed to waiting out a big defenseman trade until next offseason. We will have a better idea of what we have, if people are talking about how good Bean is this year it might mean he has a legit shot next year, and at that point we will know what we have in Fleury and Hanifin. From there we can figure out who's on their way out.
