Scott Harrington is basically assured the #5 spot(AHL only contract) and then you have Loof, Buchinger, Gaudet, Biakabutaka, Johannessen and Malmstrom fighting for the final few spots(Buchinger and Johannessen are clearly leading the pack at this point IMO but I'd be very surprised to not see Loof make the squad).

In person, I was mostly watching the small area plays.

Fischer has the goods. He was very efficient in small spaces, showing very good awareness of where his options were, baiting the forechecker to where those options weren’t, and then dishing it through/around them. If he adds two inches and 20 pounds, he’s got top-4 upside for sure.

Same goes for Jecho. He looked very skilled out there, but his body is behind his skillset. He needs to add muscle. If he had Pekarcik’s body… well we wouldn’t have gotten him where we did. I see a player there if he puts in the work to develop a linebacker’s body.

Robertsson is juuuust about there. As reliable as it gets. Very defensively responsible, very effective on the forecheck, in small spaces, and along the boards. He needs to find his shot again, but it hasn’t disappeared entirely. He’s got the moves to make some noise in the slot for sure.

Dvorsky looked ok. Too skilled for his linemates at times. He made a lot of nice little plays to keep possession alive, but sometimes the play died anyways which must have been frustrating. He’s going to benefit a lot from spending a year in the AHL.

The Oilers guys looked good. Holloway is a piss missile out there. Broberg is composed and efficient.

Not sure if you're joking or not; but it's actually a legit possibility.
Springfield is going to be STACKED. Only real question for them is whether Zherenko/Ellis can hold down the net. Zherenko just hasn't looked right since the injury.

I'm having trouble deciding if Springfield is going to be great because of all the young talent, or dreadful because of all the young talent.

Oh yeah. Perunovich. He seemed confident playing patty-cake with Schenn on the PP. In his defense, nobody was doing much to get open or shake their zone coverage. But — for a power play specialist — he did very little to open up space for his teammates. He held the line well, but then just kinda stood there instead of walking it and changing the angle of attack. He got taken down by Kyler Yamamoto along the boards, all 5’8” of him. Made some nice small-area plays to hold the puck, but couldn’t do anything with it or move it to anybody else afterwards. Idk what is holding him back at this point, but if he can’t help our PP then idk what he adds above anyone else. It sucks, but I just don’t see a contributor there anymore. He’s lost too much ground to the guys coming up behind him. I think POJ does more for us at this point. We haven’t seen Tucker yet this preseason, but I’d almost rather have him too regardless based on what Tucks does. Tough game for Scotty Hockey.

Tucker played in Dallas. He made sure to try and injure our goalie and take a stupid elbowing penalty.

I'm a huge Zherenko fan and I would agree with you since the injury. He was flat out dominant last year pre-injury, at one point sporting a .937sv%. He looks slow and unsure of himself in net right now which is wild because he's an athletic freak. Something isn't right.

On the flipside Ellis looked great.

It sucks to see Zherenko struggling. This is a guy who I really thought was NHL caliber but since he got hurt last season, he hasn't had it. Hopefully he just needs some time.

Dvo-Schenn were good, as preseason progresses and the cut down the roster we'll get better looks with more rounded lineups with more NHL players.

Holloway looked great.

I liked what I saw from the bottom 6. Peterson also looked serviceable.

Broberg-Colt looked good, Broberg looked timid, but he is playing on a new team, gonna need a little time too adjust.

Perunovich's last chance is quickly getting away from him. He still looks like a player who's only Defensive play is to chase things around and is positioning sometimes leaves me confused.

Buchinger was fine for a 20 year old, but he needs to make better decisions on when to and when not to pinch, especially when he is by himself and in the Neutral Zone. Tho outside that one play he looked fine under pressure. Defensively he looked fine. Nothing spectacular

Fischer looks good. If he can put it all together we might have something there.

Malmstrom seems like a player who would stress me out.

I noticed Broberg was a little timid at times during the SCF posted that.

I'm definitely not inclined to carry 8 D. Simply because we're that heavy on forwards.
Having said that, I'm waiting to see how Skinner and Schueneman look.
I seriously doubt either can really change my mind on things, but there's a possibility that one of them surprises.

Slightly changing the subject; I'm ready to see some cuts. I know it's still early in camp, but we've got too many fringe NHL'ers to make a decision on to keep this many Jr. players around.

Maybe a rebuilding team like the Sharks or Hawks. Maybe a team that suffers some training camp injuries. Your point well taken though, most teams are going to be sending down their own fringe players around the same time and won't give ours a second look.

Got home from the game. Some thoughts:

Parayko’s an awesome dude. My kid had a sign asking for a puck. Not only did Parayko give him a puck but he also banged on the glass a couple times and winked at him. He simply gets it. My son has a new favorite player.

Mrsic is tiny. Barely played.

Schenn looked rusty.

Dvorsky looked ok. Some good plays but pretty clearly not NHL ready IMO.

Robertsson was impressive. Nice poise and a good shot.

Kaskimaki had two nice dishes that the receiver flubbed. But he also made a number of bad plays.

Laferriere was better than expected.

Buchinger was bad. Lots of defensive miscues.

Holloway was flying and generally good.

Broberg was alright.

Perunovich played a solid game until the giveaway that led to a goal against. He was good on the PP, which he’s going to need to be to make the team.

Fisher was probably the best of the young d-men.

Malmstrom was bad. The “goal” he scored was hilarious though. I may never see that again. My son was all concerned bc Utah pulled their goalie and I was explaining how it was fine since as soon at STL touched the puck the play would be called dead and…then that happened. lol

Pekarcik was hit or miss. Mixed bag from him.

Dickinson has speed and the shootout goal was nice but he is knocked off the puck super easily.

Peterson has very little skill but was noticeable in a number of ways out there.

Both Hofer and Zherenko looked good.

The problem isn't that Yamamoto is 5'8".
The problem is that Yamamoto weigh's in at 155 lbs.
Yamamoto's not even a "heavy" small player like Dingo is. He's just tiny.
Granted he has some "buzz saw" to his game, but I've had plushie's that were more physically imposing.
