To be fair, they announced that the away preseason games were going to be in this style a while ago.

They also keep suggesting that they needed to do an alt-cast to broadcast the Avs arena feed. If that is actually a thing, that's an odd rule/restriction.

I'm not a fan at all but its better than no hockey.
