You expect mistakes by players in the first few exhibition games (scrimmages aren't the same) but flash something that says you can build on this over the next week or two as you shake off the rust.

You can see the rust in the veteran NHLs, shots missing the net, plays broken up by errant passes, etc., but they also flash the talent that makes them NHL players..

I'm just not seeing that from the AHL guys.
That is a sad testament to the flyers drafting/development that this team has no one really standing out pushing to get a spot.

Not really, more a "donut" issue. Hextall blew his last draft and CF traded a draft's worth of picks, so they're missing "2 drafts" worth of talent from 2018-2022. Players from 22-26 years old that should be filling out the AHL roster and pushing for NHL jobs.

There are two groups of AHL players:

the "old" guys:
Lycksell (25), Ginning (24), Attard (25), Eklind (26), Abols (28), Richard (28) - these are the AHL+ types you hope can provide short-term injury replacements. Lycksell probably the only one good enough to push for a job.

young enough to have upside left:
Rizzo (23), Desnoyers (22), Wisdom (22), Andrae (22), Grans (22), McDonald (22), Avon (21), Tuomaala (21), Gendron (21), Samson (21), Mann (20)

Note those top young prospect lists use 23 as the cutoff, by 24 players are physically mature and have 2-4 pro seasons under their belt, so their upside is generally limited.

Rizzo is a good example, this is a "due or die" season, if he doesn't show NHL potential, he'll get lumped into the AHL+ at best category.

The younger group has (2) 2nd rd picks, Andrae and Tuomaala (Grans was for LA), the rest were all picked outside the top 100.

Yes really. They have no one knocking on the door of a non playoff team for the last 4 years.

Does the bold fall under the umbrella of what I said?

Stop making excuses for Chuck.
