Kids on the Shore line looked pretty solid, that was pretty fun for a preseason game except the blowing the lead part of course

They were actually 5 seconds behind Nick's call on one of the radio feeds...

kabcradio.com sucks that's for damn sure. I can wake up the next morning and get the final score before kabcradio.com gives us Nick's call.

KABC went out on me twice... I had to hit the link to one of nhl.com's radio feeds to get it to game time...

Amen! What is up with that! This station sucks mad cahones!

I read about this earlier today in the article about the ice in another thread

The arena switched to LED lighting in-house in an energy conscious move. Lakers games, which used different color temperature lights than Kings games, were known for producing a lightened playing surface surrounded by shrouded seating areas.

With the new lights, the playing surface for Kings games will be illuminated brightly, surrounded by a more darkened seating area. Those who watch on television may notice a slight difference, though fans who attend games regularly likely won’t notice any significant change.

"Fans who attend games regularly likely won't notice any significant change"?????

Uh….. it's incredibly noticeable that they changed the lighting….. there's no possible way anyone who attends games all the time could walk in and not notice the lighting lol. It's THAT bright

I got to attend tonight's game at Staples thanks to the generosity of a great Kings fan. Had a GREAT time. I'm not a hockey expert, but here are my impressions:

ANDREOFF - Of course, I missed Andreoff's goal by seconds, just like last year when Andreoff scored at the start of the Kings-Ducks prospect game at the Ponda. Andy, can you wait a few minutes for me to get seated? Andreoff was solid. I didn't notice him that often but there was one play where a Coyote came down the ice with only LoVerde between him and the goalie. LoVerde closed in on the oncoming Coyote and in a flash Andreoff sandwiched him on the other side and they separated the red and white from the puck and knocked it up ice. Nice defensive work by Andreoff and LoVerde.

MERSCH-SHORE-ZYKOV
- Only really noticeable forward prospects on the ice on a consistent basis. I thought of them as MSZ, but Kids on the Shore is kind of fun, gameraMan. This line had several good looks, particularly in the first two periods. I was looking for how well players worked with their linemates to create opportunities or prevent ones and this line was a threat. I think Shore and Zykov played together in this game last year, with Sabourin, if I'm not mistaken, and that line was the best prospect line then, too.

Anyway, MSZ created many opportunities and worked well together, but they never managed to convert. Still, they showed promise. However, I believe the Coyotes 2nd goal was scored when a Coyote waltzed right through this line and zipped a short one into the goal.

Zykov took 2 penalties and the second one at the end of the game was particularly ill-timed. That's something he needs to work on this year.

LOVERDE - Solid overall. He made a few mistakes but then would immediately make up for a mistake with a good play to break up a Coyote opportunity. I think he was on ice for the 2nd Coyotes goal.

EBERT AND FORBORT - I would have loved to see Ebert paired with Leslie, since they have had a lot of time this year to develop chemistry on the Guelph Storm. The first Coyotes goal was scored on a wraparound. Ebert was following his man around the back of the net from the goalie's left side to the right, trying to cut him off, while Forbort was still covering his man on the goalie's left, so when the Coyote circled behind the net, barely edging Ebert, there was no one on the right to block him and he scored. They were both fine overall, but not much chemistry yet. Ebert has a HARD shot and a beautiful long pass, but when the Coyotes figured out that he was going to usually wind up and go for the hard shot, they started blocking him pretty consistently. He needs to mix it up more. Still, Ebert is a fun player to watch.

MUZZIN - It was fun seeing Muzzin as the only vet of the five-man group sometimes. I had confidence that if the prospects made a mistake, he was ready to cover for them and he did. Seeing Kopitar, Gaborik, Brown, and Muzzin on the ice was a thing of beauty. They were by far the best players on the ice. They were almost four pieces of the same organism and sometimes Marty was the fifth. If Gaborik and Kopi had any more chemistry we'd be calling them J.D. and Turk. Goal 2 was scored by Gaborik with an assist by Kopi and Goal 3 was scored by Gaborik with assists from Kopi and Brownie.

CLIFFORD-LEWIS-CRACKNELL
- Cracknell was fine. I didn't notice him that much. Clifford and Lewis are fast, they're 100% hustle and determination. They had some good looks but, let's face it, they were never much threat to score. Still, they kept the Coyotes busy with their rushes.

JONES
- Periods 1 & 2 were won by the Kings and Period 3 by the Coyotes, imo, and a lot of credit goes to Martin Jones. When he was in net for the first half of the game, the Kings just played with confidence and control. When he left the game, the Kings were up 2-0. Deslauriers took over halfway through the game. In the 3rd period the Coyotes kept shooting from near the blueline, hoping for rebounds or a lucky goal, even though their first 2 goals came from a wraparound and a shot close in.

We were up 3-2 near the end of the game and Zykov got a penalty, followed by Kopi. The boys had to kill a 5-on-3 (sorry, 6-on-3 with the goalie gone) and nearly pulled it off, until the Coyotes fired one from the right side with one second left in the Zykov penalty. ONE SECOND. If that goal had gone in two seconds later...but it didn't and Kopi's penalty carried over into overtime. Not much time to score in overtime when you're busy penalty-killing, though our stars almost got that puck in past Dubnyk when they had a go at the power play.

I was really hoping that one of the prospects would score a goal to win the game and, with the fourth Kings' shot in the shootout, Nick Shore did just that, adding to Kopitar's tally.

Is there a better way to spend a Monday night than at a Kings game?

Guys, while clever, I seriously doubt that nickname will take hold, given Slovakia's post-WWII history.

Gaborik would probably be deeply offended.

Its hard to offend slovaks/czechs as they usually like this type of dark humor. I come from Slovakia and I highly doubt Gaborik would take offense or even over think the name.

Thanks for the indepth writeup.

Am I the only one that can see LoVerde as the possible replacement for Greene in a year or two? Guy just came out of nowhere and has been really solid at every level he has played at. Nothing fancy just solid.

Doubt that ever happens, both of them are too similar of players. Also the Kings seemingly always pair a puck-mover with a defensive d-man. Leslie and Ebert are both puck moving d-men so I just can't see them doing it. That said 'Bert and 'Bort is a pretty great choice for a pairing as both have a decent blend of both defensive and offensive skill. I'm thinking Leslie (if he spends time in the AHL this year) ends up with someone like Roach, MacDermid, or LoVerde that is stronger defensively as his long term partner.

Thanks for the analysis!

Maybe, but as long as there are Russian players on the team or even in the league, this is a bad idea. Anyone who has lived through the Cold War can detail atrocities committed by the KGB...this is not a political forum, so I'm not going to go into a lot of detail about it, just my opinion it's not gonna fly.

I'm sure there are plenty of creative minds here. Someone on this board (can't remember who) actually came up with "that 70's line" before it was stolen by the media. I'm sure we can come up with something more palatable for a nickname for that line.

The DAM line or MAD.

Good point about pairing a puck-mover with a defensive d-man. At this point in time I don't see Ebert and Forbort as a complementary pair in the mental sense. I think both would need a partner who sees the ice really well, who thinks a few steps ahead, because both Ebert and Forbort have some developing to do in that area to better take advantage of their physical skill and size (in Forbort's case).

I was really hoping O'Neill would stand out so I kept an eye on him but I really can't remember anything of note.

A couple of things I wanted to add:

1) The other day I watched a preseason game between two teams back East and there was a stark difference between the Kings prospects as a whole and the prospects of the Eastern team I was rooting for. The Eastern team's prospects were frequently out of position, individually scrambling to make a great play and impress. The Kings prospects were good at staying in position and working the system together with their linemates. It is obvious that playing the same system in Manchester that they do in L.A. has been a tremendous benefit.

2) If we are looking 5 years down the road, we had better hope that Prohorkin signs with the Kings, Kempe turns out to have top-notch ability, and we draft and develop some elite goal-scorers, because while we have good depth coming up the pipeline, I'm yet not seeing what crew is going to replace the stars we have now. (Thankfully we have Pearson and Toffoli blossoming. Blossoming? Can't I think of a better word here? Apparently not.) Looking at the goals scored in regulation tonight, Gaborik scored two and the other was scored by a projected fourth-liner. I see mostly depth players, a few potential second-liners, but no first-liners coming up the pipeline. Make me happy and tell me I am wrong.

3) I'm glad Nick Shore is a Kings prospect. He is a smart player who knows his strengths and plays them well. He doesn't try to become a player he's not come game time. He's a player that a coach can depend on.

4) Kopitar. As if we haven't said it enough, what a great defensive player he is. What a complete player. He prevents goals, refuses to give up the puck anywhere, and makes his linemates that much better. Unbelievably unselfish. What a player.

ETA: Here is Helene Elliott's take on last night's game at Staples. Wow, I didn't realize that MSZ were on the ice for 2 goals against. Also, Frozen Royalty has some audio interviews up with Greene, Shore, and Gaborik. I'm sure Gann will be posting them soon here.

The coaches put Shore on the end of OT PP with Kopitar and Gaborik. Also, he was the first on the shootout after the vets. That may have been a reward; as you mentioned, his line was very strong. They made the most impact of all the lines (except the Kopitar one, of course) imo.

That's insane.

Who was coaching that squad? Bet he's in a whirlpool this morning.

From DS: "Not really. Special teams. Robyn went out for a while in the second period and for a while we only had four defensemen. Slava can handle the minutes."
