Pre-Game Talk: Prepare your Angry Jokinen emotes for more Smiling Stu

I am going to go against the grain here and say I don't hate it if Stu starts. Picard is small and LAK shoot high often. I feel like Stu has a higher ceiling and we need that if we want to advance deep.

(I know Stu sucks and I am not a supporter at all. He's slow, not athletic and can't seem to get a .900 to save his life)

Stu has the ceiling of a doll house.

This is f***ing Groundhog day. But with infected zombies, giant spiders, and mandatory pineapple on brown bread burned pizzas.

This a crime again humanity, horror beyond comprehension, my day is ruined and my sanity gone.
"Grumpy...Grumpy Koala! I thought it was you."

"Stu Skinner...I have missed you so much."

If anything, you know they're going to play hard for him, I'm thinking, maybe.

Those 2 mutts guys have nailed some things in the past. I would bet it's Skinner. They did the same thing last year against Vancouver.

Not the same, as Pick played the game after he won, and we lost that game, and then Skinner played the game after that. I would be fine if they followed that win and you’re in plan.

Assuming skinner starts with a 2 goal leash. Whether we like it or not skinner at his best is better than average pickard. Let’s just hope for our sake skinner wakes up at home.

Skinner at "his best" appears once every 20 games and "his best" is still slightly better than league average.

Stu Sucks, but Picard was not much better.

Picard might be slightly better, but people here acting like Stu is Mike Smith and Picard is Carey Price
Pickard had a brutal second period but at the end of the day the team was only down by one goal heading into the third and he locked it down not giving up anything else after that. He made the saves when they counted. Stu didn't in the third of the first two games. He got progressively worse. I still trust Pickard a hell of a lot more than Skinner at this point.

And yet he rarely shows up. He has a good game and then a million bad ones. He's the definition of inconsistent and that's why he can't be trusted. The sample size is more than large enough at this point. He fn sucks. lol

So those probably weren’t words of congratulations Skinner was saying to Pickard last night after the win. He probably told him “My dad is good buddies with Dustin and my dad told him he’d pay for his golf trip if I got to play game 4, so net’s mine again bitch.”

We aren't winning the Cup with Calvin Pickard.

Was going to say this. They both suck in a starter role unfortunately.

Both of them are backup goaltenders, and in Skinners case he has been exposed already, and Pickard with a heavy workload will be exposed as well.

Only hope the Oilers have is for Skinner to catch lighting in a bottle like he is prone to do the odd time.

Either way, there is likely a new goaltender here in Edmonton this offseason, unless they win the cup.

Is there a reason to believe the bold is actually true?

Behind the same team Pickard has put up better results 2 years in a row, regular season and postseason.

There were articles in various places, including nhl website. Knoblauch said something to the effect that he could be out "for a while," "at least the first round."

He said he’s out at least the first round. He’s gone to get a second opinion. From all indications his season is probably over

The question is what is "quite some time." Being out 2 months is the end of the season. Being out 1 month in the context of the playoffs (potentially one or two rounds) is "quite some time."

I’ve heard out for season multiple times on various reports / pods when he first went out. He’s not skating so I doubt he’s ready for R2 if we get that far.

Also “but it’s believed to be a serious injury that worst case scenario may end his season

I wouldn’t be holding your breath for an Ekholm return anytime soon.

I'll resort to the stats...

All the playoff stats in their careers:

Skinner career playoff save pct... 88.9% in 37 appearances
Pickard career playoff save pct... 88.9% in 5 appearances

High danger sv pct: Skinner 77.6% Pickard 78.3%
Medium danger sv pct: Skinner 88.0% Pickard 94.7%
Low danger sv pct: Skinner 94.6% Pickard 89.7%

Expected goals against per 60: Skinner 2.71 Actual GAA 3.00 differential +.29
Expected goals against per 60: Pickard 2.58 Actual GAA 2.92 differential +.34

Bigger sample size for Skinner which imo means his numbers are more baked in than Pickard who has a much smaller sample size and might be better than the 88.9% overall number he's shown so far... ie there were those 2 tipped/deflected goals last game which factor quite large into his data.

Oilers score 3.506 goals/60 with Pickard in net
Oilers score 3.516 goals/60 with Skinner in net

By looking at the stats there's not a huge difference between the 2 goalies in the playoffs.

It's a toss up statistically but I'd probably go with whoever seems hotter.
