I agree to an extent. Rielly has been good but I don't recall a single bad game for Sandin. Whatever pairing he's played on has given up little to nothing and generates the vast majority of shots and chances. The Leafs have been far, far better with him on the ice than without.

That is true. Rielly, Sandin, and Lilijgren have met or exceeded expecations for me this year.

Dermott and Brodie are slightly below but both were trending positively and starting to look better, and Muzzin and Holl have been quite clearly not up to par.

I like how everyone including Saros keyed in completely on Matthews in that sequence. Mitch probably should have done a fake pass-shot there or something. No one would expect it. Still a good play and a great save by Saros.

I cannot answer the second part of your question, but understand the answer to the first part.
American teams do not want many NHL games, and particularly home games, early in the season because their fans are preoccupied with NFL games and possibly MLB playoff games. Canadian cities are much more focused on hockey and thus their NHL teams have more games, especially home games, early in the season.
