Value of: Preds/ Isles 1st Round Pick Swap

Yes, if you read my post you quoted I said he forced 2 trades. Those trades are to what you are referring.

Again, though, I ask what is the difference between what was described as a possibility for Hagens (jumping from his draft team to sign with his childhood team) is any different than what Tavares did.
It’s more similar to what Fox did than Tavares. In Tavares’ case he was a UFA so there was no team control. In the case of Fox, he would have walked as a college “UFA” if it wasn’t for the trade. Ultimate in the case of Hagens, it’s closer to Fox then it is Tavares.

Islanders are going to take Schaefer, enjoy the next Potvin for 15 years, then watch him enter the Hall as an Islander.

You’d have to believe that Hagens was the best player in the draft; and yet somehow also be confident that no one would jump up to 3rd/4th to steal him from you. If NYI want Hagens, I’d say there is a 90+% chance they can get him at 3, and 70% chance they can get him at four (don’t see Chicago willing to drop out of the top 5, but Nash could maybe steal him by swapping and leaving Desnoyers or Frondell).

Could you imagine dropping from 1 to 5 to grab the home town kid, only to lose him at 4, and exchange you for Stiga and a late first?

NSH is likely going to get their best or second best center ever in Hagens or Desnoyers, just do that.
Nashville is also quite old and needs to replenish their pipeline and the differences here are too small to give up the 26th in addition to the Teddy Stiga who is developing very well and will be a use full NHL player IMO but if Nashville really believes in a player sure it's possible but these trades are so uncommon for a reason right?

Starting to feel like there’s a good chance, Hagens will be an Islander whether its him refusing to sign with the team that draft him so he can sign as a college free agent or down the line when he becomes a free agent in the NHl. All the things he said, you can tell what it means to him that he wants to be an islander so bad. To me the better asset management is to take the best player available and more rare type player in Matthew Schaefer, and then take the gamble that eventually Hagens we’ll join the Islanders. Even if it’s a small chance, it’s still a real possibility it happens. Not to mention besides him being from Long Island and loving the Islanders and having his family here he’s extremely close to the islanders current top prospect Cole Eiserman.

I think the world of Havens and not because he’s from Long Island, which makes me wanna route harder for him but I do believe he’s worthy your first overall. The problem is in this NHL. It’s a lot harder to find a Cale Makar Miro Heiskannen type def defenseman. If you have the opportunity to draft one, you take it.

It’s the exact same as Fox.

I'm literally quoting something you proposed, which is what Tavares did.

Isles should just be smart and draft Schaefer if he's their BPA. Hometown kid is a nice story, but Hagens is a tier below Schaefer/Misa.
The hometown angle is overblown. Fans want to watch winning hockey more than they want to watch a guy from Long Island. Gotta go with whoever the best player is.

Why does nashville need to give up that if Isles want hagens so badly.
The Isles don't want Hagens so badly. In fact, he's likely 4th in the 1OA hierarchy for the Isles behind Schaeffer, Misa and Frondell.

I don't think the Isles (and their new smart GM) care one bit if Hagens used to have NY Islanders bedsheets or whatever? It's cute that the fans talk about a prospect who was a fan of the team growing up, but in reality it has ZERO bearing on the NHL Entry Draft.

So the Isles don't care about Hagens. They are absolutely thrilled to be picking #1 and getting Schaefer.

Now, just coincidentally, at the same time, the Predators happen to want a Center... and they are going to have some number of Hagens, Frondell, McQueen, and Desnoyers available to them at #5 anyway. So the Preds also have no incentive to even TRY to pay a big premium to move up in the draft. The Preds will get their 2nd or 3rd choice probably just by standing pat at #5, they don't need to pay an exorbitant price to try to move any higher.
Predators are always stuck taking their 3rd or 4th options and leftover scraps other teams don’t want. Honestly I can see them trading down for picks next year instead!

facts:

If the islanders want Hagens, would be poor asset mgmt to draft him at 1

Sharks, Hawks, Utes do not need a player of Hagens’ ilk and will most likely go after Frondell, Martone , Desnoyers etc if Misa if off the board

Therefore it makes sense to pick up remaining assets via a trade with Nashville who need a player like Misa at 1st overall , with minimal risk to losing their hometown guy

Would 5th + 26th overall + Teddy Stiga move the needle ?
Hagens played with two stars this year. He is way overrated

I would be smart to do this but that is why it is not going to happen. No matter how people pump this draft up past probably the first three picks it is a total crap shoot. If swapping this years 1st for next years the better find a team that is willing to part with a 5 thru 10 next year because the 1-5 will be. The Preds do not look to be significantly better next season even if they picked 1 overall this draft. So having there own pick next year and turn in this years 5 pick to a top 10 next year on a better draft would go down this rebuild road faster. Additionally either July 1 coming fast they need to move Saros before that movment clause kicks in. This will add picks to the bucket as well, while rebuilding thru the draft can result in a long term solid core it takes time. And patience has never been a strong suit here, when you consider this is Nashvilles first real rebuild in over 25 years. For the franchise it is untilled ground. Mistakes will be made, I question still if they will stay the course or fall back to signing used up veterans as they have always done. Still think July 1 will answer a lot . Keeping Saros who will be 34 or 35 before the team will be in a position to compete again is a huge indicator what Trotz has planned long term.
